MMO's are unique in how you develop a reputation on your server. How do you plan to make a name for yourself in Vera?

Everytime I think about someone being a huge name in a game I always remember Zezima from Runescape back in the early 2000's.

WoW 20 years ago: Making a name for myself... I created the Frost Mage Meta build, but for myself I swapped 1 thing to improve my PvP strength. Guild complained I wasn't meta enough. I was the guilds top DPS by far. (until Warlocks were buffed to an insane level.) My mage reached Commander in PvP (3rd highest rank iirc. Marshall ranks were ridiculous) In my guild at the time, Pally's weren't invited to Molten Core as they were seen as useless back then. I spent a month arguing Healadins would be great. Finally I was needed to fill a healing spot. Without any set gear, I beat out every priest except our fully geared main one. It was hard work, but it allowed others in my guild to enjoy the content. I devised tactics to defeat 3 of the bosses, with 100% success rate. The first of which, not a single player ever even died there again. It took weeks, and so many wipes before anyone listened to me. Complicated story, but our guild had 2 halves, I worked very hard for both sides. Did a lot, gave a lot. Received basically nothing, never complained. In return, I was treated like absolute garbage. Eventually it burned me out and I left. Name? Names don't mean sh!t... Unless... It's... Leeeeerrrroyyyy Jenkinssss!!!

*In FFXI, and FFXIV 1.0 the global servers felt very worldly and alive.* *Multiple languages, cultures, playstyles, it was the best Community experience I've had in an MMORPG.* *Your reputation was absolutely critical!*

Great video! I also saw that comment from Asmon and had similar thoughts. Mega server doesn't work at all in Ashes for about 15 different reasons. The main is, individual land ownership. You can only do a Mega server if land is not owned by players, otherwise it is not possible. The Nodes is another major reason. Ashes is completely different from the Mega server games like WOW, ESO, GW2. You really can only have a Mega server on a Themepark style game.

Good point. Yeah ashes seems like it’s going to be a very community oriented game. From what you know of the Riot MMO, do you think they’re leaning more theme park or sandbox?

@@TheCopiumClinic No idea, other than I think they go safe and go Themepark as that is what most AAA studios do

Asmond is coming st it with a large group mindset. An individual or small group can get lost in the numbers of a Mega Server. The small population of numerous will be smaller, and the chances will actually exist to make a name for yourself and possibly even affect the smaller world.

I have watched the Asmongold clip previously, if not live, and I agreed with him then, as well as now, as I interpreted his comments as exclusive of phasing and other similar tech dodges such as ESO uses (Simply a collection of zone server instances rather than a single integrated server). The advantage of a single world in which all players have the potential to interact is that of increased immersion, as this structure would more closely simulate an actual physical world. This would not, necessarily, diminish the "neighborhood" or "social ecosystem" of which you speak. With severely limited fast travel, I foresee a tendency of players in AoC to self-restrict their activities to one metropolitan ZOI or castle ZOI. Communities coalesce around centers of activity and it will be very well possible for players to play frequently with the same group of players. I don't believe that a single, integrated world that restricted fast travel would eliminate the local, small ponds which a population limited server creates by default.

Well said. I don't prefer a system like you described, but I can understand how people do. In high school I made unexpected friendships because I saw the same strangers over and over again until we finally spoke. Working in a big city, I hardly ever see the same person twice.

With regards to Mega servers only being possible with theme park MMO's, aren't you guys missing examples like EVE Online, a purely sandbox unsharded server? Yeah, I know it's a space game but with the right design a mega server, without instancing or phasing, would be a blast. The communities will still be there but you'll also have the meta-communities - communities of communities. Think the different communities within in a country vs the different countries in the world. You'd also have inter-communities, e.g. various nations' blacksmiths, alchemists, gatherers, etc finding common ground with their counterparts in other communities.

Good point. I could see that being viable in massive worlds or universes. What are your thoughts on how they could achieve something like a mega server in an MMO like Ashes?

@@TheCopiumClinic I think we're still too far from that hardware-tech-wise. There have been some interesting developments though, like AoC's own texture combining for the large scale battles and another over-ambitious space mmo that didn't work out so well, Dual Universe. They're small steps in the right direction though, as long they keep on working on it to push progress, we should get there sooner or later. From a social planning perspective, if the tech is there to support it... I'd go for a multi-nation kind of setup. Those nations don't need to be at war like in WoW, but you definitely want some kind of separation/division which "may or may not" prompt conflict, politics, trading or any other kind of interaction more significant than just simply talking to another player. Maybe have certain resources unique to one area but required by another area for activating some kind of lucrative event. The twist is that only those in who's area this McGuffin resource appears can access it but it can be looted from them by anyone. Does the group that wants it kill for it or trade for it? I also think that a sort of dynamic sizing would be required to some degree. While there should be a lot of free space to roam around in, the world should've feel empty but let's say a certain threshold is reached then a game system triggers a "newly found province/island". Should the player base shrink to a certain threshold then another game system triggers and one random (or more) of a number of prepared areas suddenly become uninhabitable for some story driven reason. This could be woven in as predicates for the game events like in the last livestream, just one a much larger scale .

it's not a terrible take, the points you just made would remain true even if there's only 1 world? If anything being held accountable is far more likely when there's only one server because you can't then server swap to run away.

In a single-server game with millions of players, you could hide or vanish very easily after doing something sketchy.

@@TheCopiumClinic It might not have millions of players, but EVE Online is one big server and people can't hide there. Even in the real world people can't hide, look at the amount of infamous Karens you see on KZfaq 😁
