For me, the worst was Elijah Craig barrel proof b 523. I wish I had the same experience the vanilla note I got was a very artificial sweet and low kind of vanilla. I have it halfway and I’m tasting it again tonight I hope to get the same notes and enjoyment.

Worst value was that Bardstown 6yr rye origins to me over mint ugg $62 Best value $50 keepers heart 118p cs irish/bourbon. Just keep going back to it

Those are good for search results and views, but that's not my style as it's boring to make and if I feel that way, it's not going to be a good video. I love trying new whiskeys and there are so many good ones people need to go out and buy instead of just always trying to get the same old Stagg or EH Taylors. I mean they are good (and I hunt for them as well), but there are other good bottles to drink until you find them! Hopefully this video highlighted some good releases in 2023. Hey Jonathan! Nice! I'm so glad your palate aligns with mine as it seems I'm the only WhiskeyTuber even mentioning Murray Hill Club now. Oh well, more for us I guess! Elijah Craig Barrel Proof batches are so wonderful as well and if I need a punch in the mouth full of flavor, that's the pour I go to. If you haven't tried the #1 (Bardstown Bottled in Bond), give it go as it doesn't have the wheat "funk" people hate about wheats, but has the coffee/chocolate bitterness you get like in the Murray Hill Club. Hey Peter! I wish I had a bottle of the 13th Colony Bourbon or Rye! It would have made the list for sure. I have been looking for that Bunnahabhain 12 Year Cask Strength for months with no luck (at close to retail price). I'm hoping I'll be able to secure a bottle in 2024! Your list is a great mix of bourbons, ryes, and single malts and would be a perfect setup for anybody's bar to please all whiskey lovers! Totally agree with Bardstown BIB. One of my favorite pours for the money was Chattanooga Cask 111. It’s one of the few bottles I have re-purchased. Cheers David! 🥃

I agree with the Redwood Empire. I have the Pipe Dream Cask Strength. Murray Hill is still around $120 here. Great video as always!🥃

Redwood Empire cask strengths are a great buy but I thought with the "bourye" market not being as robust, I would add the best value "bourye" cask strength I know of in 2023. But you can't go wrong with any Redwood Empire for sure! It seems the price of Murray Hill Club decreased in the second half of 2023 here in California so I'm hoping it'll be a trend for the rest of the country soon. Hey Andre! Those are fantastic and the reason I left out the "staple" bottles would be that my list would also be dominated by the same bottles you have. To me, the Jack Daniel's Bonded Rye and the Pikesville Rye are the two best value whiskeys in the market. Period. So delicious and yet, priced wonderfully! That was a well thought out list. I like the concept of how bottles were eligible to be on it. But my favorite part was the way the Baker’s 13 magically jumped from the countertop to the top of the fridge. That bottle is demanding to be reviewed! 🤣 Great video my friend, really enjoyed it! Hey Vic! The concept is used by many WhiskeyTubers including ADHD Whiskey and Mash & Drum. I don't think a sample or a pour is enough to do a full deep dive on a whiskey to make it "whiskey of the year" on any list. There are some good whiskeys I had several samples of and I thought about that, but then I thought, the samples can be inconsistent and with no idea on the purity of the sample (was the sample bottle new? what was in it before? was it washed with soap or water or at all? was it completely dried out? etc.) I decided against it. I really want to do a review on the Baker's 13 and my "opening ceremonies" tradition has kept me from trying that bottle so far. After the "year end" videos, that should be #1 or #2 on the list of bottles I need to review in 2024. I tremendously appreciate all your support and kindness for my channel! Let's both have a great 2024 on KZfaq (and real life) and cheers my friend~

Great value bottles David! I am going to have some pours tonight of EC BP, Lost Monarch Cask Strength and Bardstown Origin BIB from your video. My number 1 value bottle will always be Early Times BIB…$25 for a 1 liter bottle. You could also throw in Larceny BP for $65 and OGD 114 for $25. 🥃

I drink the whole 750 ml bottle over several weeks, before judging. My favorites, probably unique to me, are the 100 proof Old Grand-Dad for how it makes me feel the next few hours and the next morning; also the Bernheim Original 90 proof wheat whiskey for how it improves my sleep. Both are $30 or less.

Love the variety! As others said totally different from others' choices. I will recommend Coopers' Craft 100 if you can get it. It's delicious!

If you like the notes I talked about in the "top 5 whiskeys of the year" (sweet fruit, spice, and dark chocolate/coffee bitterness at the end", you'll love the Murray Hill Club! It is a great bottle that gave me everything I wanted but at a lower proof so it was smooth and easier to fully experience its flavors. The Lost Monarch is also a great bottle and is a "bourye" that is amazing at a great price as most "bouryes", especially at cask strength, is very expensive. Thanks again for your views and comments! David, These types of videos are appreciated for sure. I have seen/heard you speak of the Murray Hill bottle with high praise. When you were on the live stream and you were talking to I think Nancy Fraley, must have been a real treat. I think she was impressed that you were talking about one of their lesser known products. Hey Dana! Yeah, the Murray Hill Club is a bottle I have enjoyed more and more as I keep having pours of it and also having pours of other more expensive bottles as it stands up to them in many ways. It was $120 in our area as well, but has decreased to $95 in the last couple of months and hopefully it'll continue to decrease so it'll even be a better value! Hey Mark! It is a new staple of value whiskeys that was released in 2023 and that's what I wanted to highlight! Unless there is a different mashbill or something unique in 2024, it won't be eligible for 2024 value whiskey of the year. I'm glad Bardstown decided to release the origin series as they were one of very few "non limited edition" releases in 2023 that was so delicious yet priced right as well! Hey Dave! Yeah, I realized if I kept the usual suspects on the list, it would just be another video full of them as they are just so wonderful! It's not their fault they are so good and priced wonderfully, but I have to keep the video fresh. Bardstown is one of the few distilleries in 2023 that put out a really great regularly available whiskeys in 2023 and like you said, all three are fantastic! (along with Discovery 11, which I was not able to get). Hopefully this is start of a new trend of great regular whiskeys coming on the shelves! I actually had to have two pours of each and sat there for an hour thinking which one was going to be #1 and #2 so it was a real close one. I really like the methodology employed here to remove the budget value staples. I actually have a couple of these and agree with the findings with the exception of the Elijah Craig barrel proof. I really like this list. Also that Bardstown bottle has sold out in my area. Seems like people have caught onto it.

I root for Bardstown as they could have made many of these $50 to $70 and people would still have purchased it, but they priced the bourbon and bottled in bond at low 40's in my area, which was so great to see! I know the Elijah Craig Barrel Proofs are sometimes hard to get or really pricy in some areas, but for 12 years old and cask strength goodness, it's hard to find something like that these days for under $150, yet alone at $80. Any other bottles you purchased in 2023 that was a solid value? Thanks a million for always viewing and commenting on my videos! Great video. I've tried couple of the ones in the list and they are good. I still need to get the Bardstown BiB. I tried it at the distillery right before the tour and it was pretty good. I'm usually not a wheater fan but this one didn't have much of that wheat funk. I have the white label that I still haven't cracked and their single barrel is excellent. I'd put New Riff SB Rye into the list. For a spicy 95/5 rye fan, it's a good one.

Hey Danny! I missed the Bardstown Single Barrel at Cypress, which I heard is all grape soda and pure goodness!! I wasn't able to make it to Cypress and was too slow online. Oh well, next time!! You're right that the Bardstown BiB does not have the crazy wheat funk that others have. I have not tried any New Riff in 2023 (which I know is a bummer) and is on the list of distilleries I need to try in 2024! Which store did you get your single barrel? Of course "value" is a relative and very subjective term, but it is a fun subject to get into. I purchased a ton of bottles this year and I wanted to give some bottles, that not only tastes wonderful, but were at a good value. And I didn't want to do another video with Rare Breed, WT 101's, Buffalo Trace, Old Forester 100's, etc. What is your best value whiskey you purchased in 2023? Eventually I will have to pull the trigger on the Murray Hill, since you mentioned it a couple times. Agreed on the Redwood Empire and the Elijah Craig, and I would say all three bottles in the Bardstown Origin Series. It's a bit of a sleeper and my go-to alternative for Eagle Rare, but a total bargain at $35. I will definitely pick up the Murray Hill and let you know. *Edit - looks like it's not yet available west of Colorado ☹️

I personally think that the Emerald Giant Cask Strength is the best of the 3 from the Redwood lineup. Can’t go wrong with either one.

Hey Darrell! I think the B523 and C923 is very close as well (even though I have the C923 slightly ahead). But the hype for the C923 is a little crazy. I don't drink too much cognac myself but cognac being a sweeter and more fruited profile (I get a ton of grape in cognac), I would start with a good double oak or wine/rum finished bourbons. Woodford double oak or old forester 1910 are widely available double oaked bourbons that are good. Finished bourbons are little bit more expensive and harder to find good ones but rare character finished bourbons are fantastic along with barrell seagrass (this one is a rye whiskey) or dovetail. Sadly, MHC is now $120 in Michigan. Still the value buy at this price point?

Hey Tim! For me, let's say it was $120 (before tax) in my area and that was the best price, I would buy a bottle for my bar as I know I love it. Obviously it's best if you had a pour but if you like American light whiskey profile (slightly less spice and more rounded sweetness) than I believe it'll be worth it for you. If you're really into Stagg or Elijah craig Barrel proof profiles (intense, flavor monsters), I would wait until you had a pour. I hope this helps!
