I like Darkthrone mostly for vocals, occasional doomer song like To Walk the infernal fields, and the frostbiting chilling atmosphere created by semi lofi production(under a funeral moon is imo the best representation of black metal sound to this day, regarding production, not obnoxiously gritty resulting in every sound blending together like Trans hunger, but still sounding enough distorted and lofi to create that chilling sound), but riff wise I found most of their material 2 simple, early bm and their later crust punk stuff both. melodies consisting of 4 bm triads tremolo picked through whole song with blast beat spam under, not as original as fe Burzum or Grausamkeit to say the least. But occasional more complex song like slottet in fjerne, or quintessence, which despite its relatively simple sound makes me happy everytime I find new little wrinkle like double palm mute here or swift hammeron there, all buried under the sonic wave of heavy distortion is what keeps me happy whenever this band comes in my random playlist blasting from speakers.
