So if we get straight to the point, the real answer is yes, long hair will suit you no matter what, it just depends on what kind of cut/style you go for in relation to your face shape and hairstyles.
Essentially this post is about the do’s and don’t you need to take into account based on your face shape whilst on your hair growth journey so you can maximise your looks with long hair.
The first place to start for and guys looking to grow their hair long is determining which face shape you have and once you know that, then you can start looking at what kind of style you are going to need in order to pull it off.
Let’s start with what face shapes are out there...
There’s a few different opinions on this as well, but to keep it simple, the 6 most common face shapes that I’ve seen mentioned in just about every article I’ve read are the:
The oval face shape
The diamond face shape
The square face shape
The round face shape
The oblong face shape
The triangle face shape
All of these face shapes can work with long hair but not necessarily all long hair styles if that makes sense. You need to modify the style to compliment the shape.
So how do we determine our face shape?
This is something I found very confusing after reading copious amounts of mens long hairstyle articles online as when this stuff is communicated in written form, I found it harder to grasp compared to someone psychically spelling it out for me.
The way I understand what I’ve found in my research is your face shape is determined by
a) The length and width of your face.
b) And the width of your forehead and jawline.
Simply put, the points to measure from for these 4 things are
The tip of your hairline in the centre of your face down to the very tip of your chin
The pointiest part of your cheek bone to the other.
The pointiest part of your jaw bone to the other.
The peak of one eyebrow to the other.
That’s technically where to measure from but everybody’s points of measurement are structured differently and this is what makes one face shape different to another.
Now please don’t take this for gospel, this is just based on what a professional stylist classes a most flattering and that is the goal with any hairstyle is to make the face look as oval as possible.
The oval face shape is said to be the most flattering and this is because most hairstyles work with it. The oval face shape is also said to be the most in proportion which is what makes it look so flattering.
So technically, if you don’t have an oval face, a stylist's job is to give you a hairstyle that is going to make your face appear more as oval as possible to get you looking in more proportion. They do this particularly with women who have bold facial structures that can come across quite masculine.
Men don’t have to worry about this rule so much as bold features and chiseled jawlines is kinda what we like because it can accentuate our manliness however, large foreheads and round jawlines is what we tend to feel most insecure about.
Anyway, so now that we’ve covered some of the most basic rules, I’m going to break down each of these face shapes, how to identify them and what the best bet for long hair is for that type.
Enjoy the video and I’ll see you next week :)
