I love how Jo is like "maximum $100. If you can't afford $100, then why you want girlfriend?" I'm sitting here like $100 for food, $100 flowers and chocolate, $100 massage, $200 jewelry, and a dress. That's more than $500 for 5 days of happiness. Now she wants to take an unforgettable trip....my wallet hates me.

Hello Jo, and thank you for sharing. My Chinese wife would prefer for me not to buy her anything! When I have bought gifts for her in the past, she tells me not to "waste money." She does like cash gifts! Keep being funny!

Pretty good advice Miss Jo. It took me awhile to figure these things out. Because at the time we were going together I lived in Alaska so I bought Alaskan style jewelry like jade, ivory etc but I learned gold nugget jewelry did the trick. More than gifts now I give her red envelope so she can buy what she want. Of course I leave a romantic note with it. Now she prefers flowers that I pick myself so I grow roses daisies sunflowers etc but when I go out and pick a bouquet attach a red envelope and her favorite candy it makes her clothes fall off. I’m still learning.

I'm glad you came up with various tiers of gifts. I've found that any gift that makes her life easier works. dinner etc. however, never forget about the gold, flowers, and chocolates. they really are special and when received, they are always very much appreciated regardless of the cost. take care Jo

About choosing jewelry or clothing - I have no confidence in my being able to choose something she would like. It is often said, "It's the thought that counts," but that's not really true. I was raised to believe that giving money shows that you don''t care enough to spend the time to give a gift you picked out but from what you say, it seems like the safest route to give something that will be appreciated. Thank you for your insights.

You are so right, my wife and I are so different on how to buy things, she is all about the high end logos, which i don't know much about them but i am putting in an effort to learn, and me, the idea of a good brand is Ford, Levi's, or adidas. But I am learning, and it makes me happy to see how much she loves these items. But i must tell you she loves the most how much i am trying and how much i think of her❤

I’m just too practical. I can see and appreciate high quality, but so many of these astronomically expensive brands offer zero improved or sometimes worse quality than other brands. I will pay for quality but I do not agree with spending extra just for the sake of it. You are just as well off lighting it on fire.

Really, anything that demonstrates to her you are thinking about her even when apart. For example I had installed my girlfriend’s favorite pinyin keyboard (not a default one) on my phone. One day she was having trouble with her phone so I switched the keyboard and handed mine to her. She started to hand the phone back saying she couldn’t use it but then I pointed to the screen. She was stunned that I had installed it, the look on her face was priceless and yes she bragged to her friends what 他的小老外 had done. Not a physical/material gift, but a gift of caring and was very appreciated.

Buying name bags is like buying an expensive meal and throwing half of it away (it means more in China). And you can get your Chinese girl friend gold and she will point out it is only 14 carat. She wants 24 carat gold jewelry (which you can’t get in the USA). I asked my jeweler and she said they don’t make it with 24 carat gold. Even 22 carat won’t do.

If she points out it is "only 14 carat" then she is also dumb. Jewelry has to be sturdy enough to be worn. And some of the most beautiful jewelry is 14 carat. 24 is too soft for jewelry. You CAN buy 24K in the US. What she is really telling you is to give her a pile of cash because that is what it is - bullion. I would say she is failing the test.

I can handle 2000 RMB not 2000 USD lol I'm a human not an ATM Love is not something that money can buy, i can give her many gifts but the best gift is that i want to be next to her and love her! Of course i always wanted to buy gifts if i will be in a relationship, especially in China because of the cute brands (I wanted to wear a panda pj's together the girlfriend i will have in the future 🤭) but 2000 USD brands are beyond my reach Don't get me wrong, i really think that buying a gift to your loved one is something special, but... 2000 USD is way too much imo

Yeah, I’m sorry but 2k for a hand bag, gift or not, is flat out stupid. I cannot believe people fall for such a scam. The cost on one of those bags (assuming they actually use high end materials and pay high labor) is probably at most $150.
