Best Hunting Rifle For Deer
One of our Patreon Members requested information on what rifle they should get for deer season. So, I pulled together this video with information on different styles of rifles and cartridges to help new hunters get started.

Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

@timm.6391
@timm.6391 3 жыл бұрын
@@Mustafa-dm5co Not to bad unless you get the short mag, those are costly to shoot, and not a big benefit....270 already a loud rifle.... the short mag with more loud crack in the shot, more recoil... doesn't give a whole lot of extra help for the extra cons.... if course more ex I expensive. I love the flat trajectory of the standard 270... but they are a loud rifle. And actually for most areas in the states, a 223/5.56 is just fine for typical game, still a bit loud for size, but again has a pretty flat trajectory for accuracy.... and good energy for the size.

You may have touched on the subject but the carbine lever action rifle chamberd in 357 or 44 magnum or even 45 long colt can also fill the freezer and not cause you to buy another type of ammo if you already shoot revolvers. And by the way some hunters like to carry both a revolver and a rifle without having to carry two different cartridges. Best video I've seen on the subject.👍

Still a great pump gun even though it is mostly plastic, kzfaq.infoUgkxh4su9YgU1tWmjikirWcKJbjsFLEU62Bc but with care it will last a long time. It would be neat if Crosman would make a commemorative version of this with real wood stock, but of course it would weigh more and cost more, but hey, it would be cool. The included scope is more of a toy, but it does work for backyard plinking. I prefer to use pellets for greater accuracy, but BBs are just as good for plinking. This is not a Red Ryder folks; fully pumped it is 3 times the power of a Red Ryder and can be dangerous if not handled properly. Be safe out there.

I lean toward my faithful old Savage Model 99 in .250-3000 for those times when a .243 or .270 would make other folks happy and my newer Savage Model 99 in .308 for those longer shots. To be honest though, I have seen, handled, and fired, a couple of bolt action rifles I could be talked into that were chambered in .30-06 and 7mm Magnum. But then all my centerfire hunting rifles are lever guns. I think I'll stick with what I got.

Once again I agree. My Remington 7400 was my first 308. I bought it 44years ago for Moose in Northern Canada, then found shooting Moose wasn’t much of a challenge, similar to shooting a parked car. I moved to Deer Hunting and started reloading etc. in the end I couldn’t count on it when needed. I bought a Remington R25 in 308. Looking back the same in 243 would have been lighter and it would get the job done. Anyway it’s restricted here in Canada although it did knock a few deer down. I can’t take the chance of using it anymore. So, I recently bought a Benelli Argo Pro their semi in 308. Shoots very well, has a buffering system built into the stock for my old bones.

For someone whose gonna have just 1 rifle, it's hard to beat a 30-06. You can use 150 grain for deer or pronghorn, and get plenty of range, but keep the recoil down some, or go with a 180 grain for Elk, and then go 220 grain for Moose or bear, or even African game. It's just a good ole all-arounder. Plenty of good other cartridges out there, but the ole 30-06 is hard to beat.

Ron, as a long time rifle fan, I say this primmer on deer rifles is the best I have heard in years. We all know your experiences and I appreciate your opinion on getting somebody started afield. New hunters really need to focus on woodsmanship. Get one of these rifles recommended here, good waterproof boots, and sometime shooting your new rifle and you would be good to go. New people in the woods should be assured of operating their weapon with confidence and safety. Practice being safe so it’s not new to you early Saturday morning of your hunt.

Switched from Remington 700 , .270 to ruger American predator 6.5mm creedmoor due to 4 surgeries on my shoulder. Been using hornady 143 gr eld-x, all one shot stops on whitetail deer and yotes from 20 yards to 328 yards . Also loved my old .25-06 Remington. The Remingtons just were to heavy , and too much recoil on surgically repaired shoulder. Can't go wrong with any of the 3 if you do your part

Like the fact that you have a Riton scope on your AR. I absolutely love Riton. I have one on my AR10 .308 and routinely shoot 600yds at the range. The glass on those things is amazing for the price.

I hunted huge western mule deer. In early 1960s I used Rem 721 270, great rifle! Then mid 1960s come out the 7mm Mag and to this day I use my Sako Finnbear. Just as accurate today as decades ago! Elk included.

A Henry lever action 30-30 has served me well. So far...16 one shot kills, cant complain about that. Hunters just don't want to get close to game anymore...

Like they say beware the man with only one gun! The best gun is the one you are used to and comfortable with in an appropriate caliber for game involved.

In Kentucky, we don't have the wide open plains like they do in Montana or other western states. If I'm hunting in brushy areas, I still use the old faithful 30-30 lever gun. My (circa 1980) Marlin 336C has put a lot of meat in the freezer. But if I'm out of the bush, in more open areas, a good Remington 700 in the 308 flavor works tremendously. Either way, I'm a sucker for blued metal and wood. I enjoyed the video. "Thumbs up" from this Kentucky boy.👍

Nicely done. You covered important pros and cons of all different calibers and actions without disparaging any of them. I think the right rifle to hunt deer with is the one you're most comfortable with. This may not be the same weapon you would use to hunt moose, pronghorns or groundhogs. The nice thing is being able to own numerous rifles and enjoy shooting all of them. You can never own too many firearms.

Another thing to consider is a bolt action doesn't use any of the shells energy to work the action... More velocity and energy equals accuracy and range improvements down range. Your very knowledgeable and love the no fluff breakdown.

Where I'm at, we have a lot of Moose and Black Bear so having something with a little extra power and being able to Shoot through some light brush is good. The 444 Marlin is hugely underrated and like the Leveraction you showed it can reach out quite a ways. The 265 gr Leverevoution loads from Hornady is excellent. They are the only pointed bullets that can be used safely in a tubular mag. But I also love my 450 Bushmaster and 243 Win. All about where I'm at and what I want to carry
