Method: Cooking starts at 2:26. Method about 4:24 In a medium sauce pan with a medium flame, add 4 tablespoons salted butter. When it's melted, add 1.5 c oats and toast. Stir to coat and keep stirring so they don't burn. When they smell toasty they're done. Recipe: 1.5 c toasted oats. Reserve half cup as topping. 3 cups milk. Keep watching 4:26.

Wow! I'm writing this comment right after my breakfast. I was quite skeptical first about butter in my porridge, but the idea of chewy and smooth in one porridge cup sounded tempting, so I tried. And wow! Never again without butter, it's so good! Thank you!

David A. I used to have one cup too but now I have half a cup with 1tbsp of chia seeds and 3 seeded n chopped dates soaked overnight in water or milk. Then in the morning I sprinkle 1tbsp of flaxseeds on top. These 2 tbsp of seeds really fill me up and are packed with omega 3 fatty acids and much more.

OMG!!!! What a total game changer!!! I made it just this morning (after starting it last night) and it is SOOO good! Very creamy!!! I used the vegan "Earth Balance Butter" and vanilla soy milk and WOW! I divided it into 4 servings and it packed 10.5g of protein per serving! And I paired it with my 5 minute steeped Earl Grey tea too! I felt like I was having a gourmet meal! 😀❤☕ The toppings definitely do taste like buttered popcorn for sure! Thanks again! I was going to post pictures for you on how it turned out but KZfaq doesn't allow it. My daughter, whom I've been trying to get on board with oatmeal, even liked it! And SOOO filling! This is definitely now going to be a staple recipe for me; thank you!!!! 😘

I tried this yesterday (skipped the soaking), and this morning (after soaking). I can confirm it was worth the wait. Delicious, crispy, buttery oatmeal. Excellent tip, thank you. 👌🤤 For all the haters; Vegan /Plant-based? Try vegan butter... Too much butter? Use less, or none. (You can toast oats sans butter) Too long to wait? Skip this part. It's still good. 4:42 Portions too small? Try double measures...you do the math.🙄 I think this recipe assumes you have some common sense.

@abraxsis
@abraxsis 6 жыл бұрын
Overkill ... if you start with COLD water/almond milk in old fashioned oats and cook it all slowly to a boil, cook for 1-2 minutes after it boils. The oats get creamy naturally without adding in gobs of calorie laden butter and milk. I agree it is about technique, but but using milk and butter to make them creamy is cheating. Oh, and if you like the toasted oat flavor, then toast the oats in a dry pan (sans butter) then throw COLD liquid over them. Again, they'll get creamy naturally but with the nutty taste.

Oooh... I am so gonna try this!! Right now I mix instant oats with rolled oats (and a tablespoon of broken flaxseed) and milk, microwave it for 2.5 minute. This makes the instant oats creamy but it leaves some bite from the rolled oats. then, to instantly make it a good eating temperature, I throw in frozen raspberries and blueberries. But, while it's healthy, warm and convenient, the flavor leaves something to be desired. Time to start buttering up those oats! :)

In India they make a savory oatmeal that consists of a porridge like base with a cup of plain yogurt. This is tempered with mustard seeds, curry leaves, Asafoetida powder all in a little gingelly oil. Finally a little lemon juice and a dash of salt. You can add a spicy hot Indian pickle or some savory Indian snacks for a crunch to top it off. A very health option!

I like to eat my oatmeal the same day I start it. That's why I shamelessly prepare the instant variety from that Pennsylvania guy. I refuse to apologize for NOT being OCD but I will ask forgiveness for being lazy. The raisin, date, and maple variety are my absolute favorite so, after following package directions, all I need to add are a pat of butter, a tablespoon of brown sugar, and (hold on to your hats) instead of milk, a large scoop of Maple Nut ice cream. Let it melt and you'll have breakfast in the Hall of the Viking Heroes! (No, you're still alive but it just makes you feel heroic.)

Wow... simply wow! I made this with 1 1/2 c Almond Milk and it was fabulous too. Also, one morning I was craving this and didn't want to wait 6 hours for the oaks to soak, so I reduced the Almond Milk by 1/4c and let them soap for only 1 1/2 hours.... it came out almost as good. I've always been a grits with soft boil eggs fan but your recipe has made me a hot Porridge fan. FYI... it's also made my lady friend love visiting me for breakfast more often... so THANKS bunches for that too.

At first I thought that this was too much work for a bowl of oatmeal. And I am certainly not going to wait hours to have a bowl in the evening. But I tried this recipe for an overnight breakfast during lockdown while I don't have to rush out of the door in the morning, and I have have to say it is pretty good. No joke about those irresistible toasted oats coated in butter. I used alternative milk and my topping with the crunchy toasted oats was peanut butter and raisins one serving; and yogurt and kiwi on another serving. So much better than over night cold soppy oatmeal. And I found it more filling. Not saying that I will do it regularly, but definitely an occassoinal treat.

I'm not a big fan of porridge but I love baked oats. I tried this baked oats recipe that called for butter and the flavor wasn't any better than a recipe without butter so I stopped using it. I tried your hack by using the butter to toast the oats instead of adding it to the wet ingredients towards the end and it completely *transformed* the recipe! It was absolutely delicious. I will definitely toast my oats with butter from time to time .

which oats are you getting ? if you are using the instant ones or the quick cooking, try the rolled or steel cuts instead, they are healthier and taste so much better, on the flipside they take longer too cook though.

Butter has so much artery-damaging saturated fat. Nothing wrong with overnight oats which take their good flavor from the delicious fruit toppings you choose and are so much easier to make.

I mean...the point of overnight oats is that it's a quick breakfast. This is a lot of steps when the alternative is something that's tasty and easy. Like this would be fun to try, but it's no replacement.

I do them 2 ways. #1...Either cold soaking in the frig overnight. I add milk , ( brown sugar , Cinnamon , Grown Clove and Nutmeg , amounts to taste ) plus and any fruit that strikes my fancy or is handy. #2..Or in the morning I cook 1/2 cup of oats with dehydrated cranberries or blueberries and add one teaspoon of sugar while it cooks. Both methods use Old Fashion Oats.

This recipe looks great! Really looking forward to try it and grow it into a habit. As we have a strong family history of Diabetes and Cardio-Vascular diseases, recipe(s) such as this could really get the family started on oats and other whole-grains. We'll remember to reduce the butter too (thumbs up)

@@ThePurpleRay Saturated fat is a non-essential macro nutrient and has been studied extensively, saturated fat raises blood cholesterol same with dietary cholesterol and when you add them together they work together raising your blood cholesterol even more then either individually. The human body does not need saturated fat to thrive and it is actually linked to many Cardio vascular diseases, anyone who says other wise has not done any research on the topic. Only two fatty acids are known to be essential for humans: alpha-linolenic acid (an omega-3 fatty acid) and linoleic acid (an omega-6 fatty acid) ( Mono-unsaturated fats and poly- unsaturated fats ) - saturated fat does not fall under either of these fatty acids and is detrimental to health.

@Steroid read my above response to ThePurpleRay. Butter is not healthy. There is a reason why doctors that look at the medical data tell people to stay away from animal products but especially dairy and processed meats. Dairy is loaded with hormones, this includes butter. It is loaded with mammalian estrogens and raises IGF-1 ( insulin like growth factor 1 ). This is why dairy is linked to all forms of cancers but especially hormonal cancer like breast and prostate. Butter is also close to 70% saturated fat, you may as well be consuming lard, is lard healthy?
@huntster4000

@@elizabethdunne9753 1 table spoon of butter contains roughly 10% of daily Vitamin A requirements, it is not a good source of vitamin A unless your gunna consume a crap ton of butter which is not healthy at all. To compare, 100g of sweet potato contains over 500% of daily vitamin A but vitamin A is a fat soluble nutrient so you would have to pair it with a form of fat to absorb it, a few individual almonds or walnuts ect are adequate and actually health promoting. So in conclusion Butter is not a good source of vitamin A and not a good source of " good fats " read my first response on this comment thread to ThePurpleRay and you will understand why.

I took your idea and made it into overnight oats. I toasted a cup of rolled oats in 2.5 tbs butter and added a 1/8 cup to the top of each of my mason jar overnight oats. in the jar I put 1 tsp cinnamon, a drop of vanilla bean paste, 1/2 cup of oats and 1 cup of milk (mine had coconut almond milk) and pinch of salt for my HB. I added a tsp of chia seed and Flax seed to mine. It sits in the fridge overnight and at 4-6am when I get up to put my dogs out I pop it in the pressure cooker on low pressure for 2 minutes & go back to bed. When we get up it's hot and ready to top as desired & eat.
