I apologise now, this video was rushed. A tiny window of opportunity between work and weather meant I had just one take. But I wanted to get it filmed and uploaded.
You can see the roses that performed best for me this year in my garden. The lane at the front gets full morning sun.
The driveway gets full morning sun and some afternoon sun.
The grass in the front garden gets interrupted morning sun and some afternoon sun.
Most of my better performing roses have age advantage but not all. I have zero doubt several of my newer roses will do better in the next year or two when more established.
Thanks for watching

I have a climber, The Pilgrim in a pot that wasn't flowering well I spoke to a lovely man at David Austin, showed him a photo . My pot was way too small for a climber. He recommended a pot that will hold at least 100 litres . I changed the pot, and this year has been amazing non-stop flowers . So dont give up on a climber it may just need a bigger pot.

Hi PB and thanks for your lovely comment. Olivia you won’t be disappointed with I’m sure. A fanatic rose for me. Outstanding in terms of performance. The first one I bought did droop a little the first year with young stems and an abundance of buds, but this past year has been stronger. The more recent purchase in its first year I wouldn’t describe as droopy at all. Either way I wouldn’t be without them. A great performer in the garden.

A pleasure to watch as always. It's nice to have my prejudice in favour of DA roses challenged by your feedback on other growers' roses. I've heard a few people say that Rosemary Harkness is one of their favourites, so maybe I'll try her out - the colouring is perhaps similar to my beloved Alpine Sunset which has huge, beautiful, long-lasting flowers, but few in number. My Emily Bronte had a good first flush but has not impressed me since then. Gabriel Oak, yes! I was feeling quite negative about his wide-spreading droopiness, but he has been producing flowers non-stop for a good while now, and the flowers are a strikingly strong pink. Whoops! I hate it when that happens. As I was saying, you make a very good case for Spicy Parfuma. One for me to try I think. Sweet Honey I am not sure about - maybe I need to see that in real life. I am having difficulty too seeing the beauty in Olivia Rose Austin, but I seem to be unusual in that. I must put in a word for some of my favourites this year: Lady of Shalott was asleep for August but now she is absolutely covered in flowers. Eustacia Vye has been flowering almost non-stop. The Ancient Mariner gets little attention, but in my experience its first flush was overwhelmingly gorgeous although like my LoS it slept through August before starting to produce again. Anyway, thank you for a fascinating information-packed tour of roses in a real garden. I'll have to watch it again to see if there is anything I missed. Life-span of individual flowers is getting to be an important consideration for me, as is continuity of flowering - but as you know, if a rose really grabs you, such seemingly important qualities fall by the wayside.
@Jay_Jay
@Jay_Jay Жыл бұрын
Hi nik, a great read as always and I shall try and respond to the points you make but remember once I start typing I can’t re-read your points. First of all sweet honey. Yes a great rose but a reason it only made it to joint fourth is a tiny matter that I didn’t mention in the video. When you have a stem with 20-30 buds on it, there is a moment in time just as the buds very start to open that they appear a little plastic. Or like icing sugar. Something man made. It only lasts about a day and when they open more you see it’s natural beauty. If a stem has a more realistic number of buds like 5 or 6 it isn’t something I notice. Does that make sense? Just a tiny negative. But for me a beautiful rose that flowers are upright and strong. Last a decent time. Above average in the rain. They do bleach and together with the longetiviry of the flowers you will see plenty of white flowers. But very strong upright growth for me. And one of my favourites. That’s as good as I can do. Your Emily surprises me, mine has been non stop and over the moon with it. Rosemary Harkness. I love it!!! Only had it a couple of months I guess but a rose that has already a firm bond with me. Lovely flowers that last a decent time. I saw it in blazing heat and it done very well. Fragrant, the most beautiful shape to its growing habit. It’s poise. Lovely flowers that attract the eye. Honestly I have high hopes next year. But very early days of course. Spicy in many regards is similar to Rosemary. Just that poise, a hybrid tea that gives more than one bud per stem is always good. Spicy Ive seen 6 or 7! I think in a year or two with additional growth many of my non DA roses will be challenging im certain of it. Eustacia Vye yes, for me this year they didn’t make the grade but I think it’s self inflicted too close to the hedge. The jury is still out I’m gonna probably leave them in situ for next year and see. Or possibly I will extract one and see how it gets on. For me queen of Sweden has been a little disappointing. Good first flush but then ran out of puff. Arthur bell like I said in the video has behaved like this for 3 years now. But fantastic in June. I guess some roses do better or worse from year to year. Gabriel oak hasn’t been droopy for me I have to say. I am trying to coax it to grow sideways a little because of its position but it hasn’t needed actual support to hold it up of that makes sense. More pinning it back. Ancient mariner is still a rose I haven’t got!! Anyway I hope your well nik. And thanks for the read once again.
@nikkonch
@nikkonch Жыл бұрын
@@Jay_Jay Thanks for that comprehensive answer. I think the Sweet Honey "icing sugar" thing is what I have been noticing to make me uncertain. My Eustacia Vyes are in a sunny (when we get sun!) open spot, so that helps. My Queen of Sweden like my Emily Bronte is last autumn's bare root, in a large pot, so too early to judge fairly - they are both about 5 foot tall but not that many flowers - I would think I had maybe overfed or overwatered them but my LoShalott has done very well under the same regime. I've just heard the weather forecast for tomorrow night here in the west : 4 degrees celsius, or less! That could cause a bit of havoc.

As for climbing roses in pots; Tantau were very direct about this, they claim that climbers ( excluding mini patio climbers ) will very quickly begin to fail to bloom sim[ply because their roots want to plunge downward as they settle in. They'll all bloom a little once planted but will not do well in pots. I\ve had this experience. I had two 'scent from heaven' either side of my front door and they did so so yr 1 and 2 but by yr 3 their roots had balled up in their containers which were 16 ins by 24 by 14 ins deep and they sulked badly. I relocated them this year to either side of a raised bed and they took off and as of today are still putting out blooms. Another Tantau rose, Camelot, behaved similarly, with adequate growth but very sparse blooms; these are getting open bottoms next year, straight down in to the soil, again, their root growth was rapid and very congested when I examined them. And yep ! Olivia is a stormer, so vigorous and beautiful. Currently waiting on my orders from Holland and thinking about next season. See you when the sun comes round again.
@Jay_Jay
@Jay_Jay Жыл бұрын
Hi there roontunes. I’ve no doubt Tantau are absolutely correct in there claims. I have many pots in my garden some with climbers growing in them. But all of these pots the bottoms have been cut off. They are baseless pots. So the roots are free to travel down into the native soil. Drainage isn’t an issue and worms etc are free to travel up into the pot to weave there magic. As the soil level in the pot reduces I just add more mulch. So many benefits to this. My wife does like vigorous ground cover plants that would choke a rose if it were buried in the ground, by elevating the roses slightly it appears to be a work around. The only issue I have found is the pots at the back of my garden are suffering an invasion of moles. The moles are going up into the pots presumably looking for worms that enter feeding of the goodness. This obviously is disturbing the roots. But I’m sure this isn’t a problem with the pot but more a problem with moles. Scent from heaven is a rose I almost bought so many times. I made sure I got it for my mum this year:) yes look forward to hearing from you next year. Take care.

Is there a reason you grow many of your roses in pots? Mine don’t seem to do as well as those I put in the ground.
@Jay_Jay
@Jay_Jay Жыл бұрын
Hi there. Space is a reason. I have a big driveway situated on a sunny aspect of my house. I am considering lifting some of that driveway for soil. I’m also waiting for some roses to gain size before planting so they can reach more sun in the part shaded locations. Some are in pots to see how they get on with certain locations or just to see if I like them before planting in the ground. Some of the pots you see are baseless so they are just elevated above the ground level but the roots go down into native soil. All of the roses I have planted in pots this year have all had a 50 percent mix of native soil as I have found this leads to stronger roots. That said I’ve always had good luck with potted roses but long term ground is better.

Hi Jay, where are you buying kordes roses from in the uk? I used to order them directly from the website but post brexit this hasn’t been possible. Please let me know. Ta.

Hi there. There’s a few places that sell them. Off the top of my head Peter beales, cants roses, Trevor white, but the companies I seem to have best luck with are Jones the rose or englishroses.codotuk but there are several companies online these are just some I’ve used. Best of luck

Hi there, I did have Claire Austin but it didn’t climb too Well for me. It was a little riotous in its growing habit for someone like me to grow up a wall. A lovely rose though.

Hi Jay Jay where are you ? Just wanted to share my first Rose bud of the year is Olivia, :) 2nd year in her huge pot, pretty good for mid April plus I live in Northampton. What are yours up to down in Kent then? Bless you.

Hi Vic, I’m currently sat on a balcony on holiday in turkey!:) That’s excellent to hear Vic, I have the majority of my roses in bud currently but my Olivia’s aren’t which is very surprising. Lots of growth but no buds from Olivia for me. Madame Alfred was the first to bud in my garden, must have been the beginning of April. But no actual roses as yet. Best of luck your end I’m sure Olivia will put on a great show. ;)

where is your abraham darby bro

I don't think JayJay has an Abraham Darby. I featured one in the first 15 seconds of a video I posted on July 14th showing the magnificent blooms. However, as in past years, after an initial display of the most stunningly beautiful and gloriously scented blooms, Abraham succumbs to diseases as the summer progresses. I had to cut off virtually every leaf due to disfiguring black spot and rust, and now it is just a straggly framework of bare stems with a few pale, small and very unimpressive flowers. Abraham is my most delightfully beautiful and my most starkly ugly rose, depending on the time of year.

I’m surprised you say that in your climate, they always seem to do so well stateside. Mine are looking awesome at the minute with loads of buds but will see better over the next year or two. I’d like to see more frequent flushes from them.
