My lawn had crab, bahia, and dallis, but all were able to be pulled up, root and all. Some weeds snap off when you pull, despite your best efforts so you can't pull the root out. But these pull great. Over time, this stuff is all but gone because my St Augustine filled in the gaps they left. These are very satisfying to pull!

By far the best video on a normally pretty dry topic. Loved the simplicity of your explanations on the whiteboard! I'm not a grass fanatic, but might become one if I keep watching your videos. Just bought a ride on mower and aerator, so I'll be watching your videos a little closer. Just trying to work out what I currently have and what to seed over the next 4 weeks! Currently in the process of trying to get rid of Crabgrass as it seems to have taken over this year!

Thanks, nice video. Great explanation for life cycle of crab grass. I try to use organic lawncare methods and I don't worry too much about weeds. One organic alternative for prevention is to have a thick, healthy lawn that crowds out the crab grass as much as possible. Your lawn is so thick that I do not think you need to put the preemergent.

I overseeded last fall and this spring. Even used the Sunday lawn Care plan. Lawn was very full and looked fantastic! I definitely had the best looking lawn all summer. Then I still got hit hard with crabgrass this year. It's taking over and I have no clue what to do aside from ripping out the entire lawn.

I just did a lawn renovation. My lawn was 26 yrs old and needed redone. I killed the lawn first with round up. And left it almost a month to make sure it was dead. I then rented a sod cutter and removed the existing sod base and hauled it away. The bare ground was as clean as whistle and no further weeds or grass appeared over the next week. I had a tiller rented as well and tilled up the base so the new seed would have a good base to attach to. I added one tandem load of top soil from the same company that I rented the sod cutter, tiller, and roller from. We spread out the soil and noticed some dead grass pieces in the top soil of which my experienced landscaping help had never seen. We pulled out most of what we could out of this new top soil. The lawn was spread out and rolled a starter fertilizer was laid down and mixed in along with Scott’s turf builder sunny mix/ bluegrass with water tech coating as we are going through a drought. The seed performed as expended and appeared evenly in about 10 days. Everything seemed to be going great. Then all these bladed like weeds stared appearing. I looked it up and it was crab grass. Apparently I purchased contaminated soil. As I now have more weeds than I did with the old lawn. I will have to have this bad soil removed and start over as my goal was to be starting with nice clean slate of grass and not a mess of weeds. My neighbour purchased the same top soil from the same company and he now also has to redo his lawn as he has the exact same crab grass weeds.

Depending on how much you have, you can use full strength Roundup in a small needle glue or oiler bottle that can be purchased to Hobby Stores. You can put one drop on each blade, and it will kill it. Fescue is really a problem grass unless you have a horse pasture. Obviously this one blade at a time is tedious but it is selective, and does work if you have patience and not too much Fescue. If you have a lot, you might consider killing it all with Roundup, and then replacing the sod.
@JoeLinux2000
@JoeLinux2000 5 жыл бұрын
AD. you have to kill it with Roundup through the leaf or blade. If you dig it out first there is not enough plant left to kill, and it will come back through the roots remaining in the ground.

It is a good idea to buy the pre-emergent early in the spring. Once they run out of it at the store, they do not restock it until the following spring. I have had very good luck with Scott's Weed n Feed with HALTS. I buy the 15,000 square feet bag, and only use 1/3 of it at a time, wait two weeks and use another 1/3, wait two weeks and use the final 1/3.

I don't understand why people like to mow their yard so low ,especially tall fescue ,that was the problem in the last yard ,mowing too low ,and not fertilizing well.. Here in California we like to do pre-emergent herbicide in February, because in March is already 70 degrees. I like to do fertilizing 1 mont before the Dimention 270. Is only a opinion.

+Cobra 03 Same here. I've seen people absolutely scalp their grass and not only is it really bad for the health of the lawn, it just looks bad. Some people don't have the first clue how to care for their lawn and to make it look great but strangely in their minds they're doing it right and everyone else is wrong!
@flawlessstrategy9972
@flawlessstrategy9972 7 жыл бұрын
Sadly, my neighbors do that and even the landscapers they hire do that. They scalp it down to the dirt and destroy the roots. They also like to mow across into my property too where I try to keep my St. Augustine at least 3.5 inches. They are probably like, "This lazy guy here... his grass is so tall, he must never mow it. I'll just send him a message." I guess if you can buy a riding mower and a trailer, you're all of a sudden a "landscaper" lol. Then they mow it down to the dirt and kill the grass. smh. Others are just too lazy to mow so they think if they mow it as low as possible they can wait a month before mowing it again... lol Then one of my next-door neighbors has the most epic sea of 1000's of yellow dandelions. He is a health nut who walks every morning at dawn but is too lazy to mow... huh? When my lawn is healthy and at nearly 4 inches, the dandelions can't even grow in my yard, no matter how many he has.

Love these vids. Trying to learn the lawn care, and I would like to see the name of the weeds pop up. Nice to see the name written out when trying to digest all this new data. I thought you were saying 'pe-skyoo', took me a couple of tries and got the proper Fescue.

Loved the editing and music, great info! Any tips to keep a 50/50 mix lawn of bluegrass / tall fescue green during 100 degree dry west desert heat? I have sandy soil, it is better to water every day at 50% or every other day at 100%? Just curious

I live in Houston and moved into my house about 2 years ago. Every year I manually get rid of these things, and every year they come back. The previous owner foreclosed on it and let the yard go, so I've been doing my best to repair it but it's always a battle. It goes from 20-30 degrees in Jan-Feb straight to 70-80 degrees in Feb-Mar. Hadn't heard of using a pre-emergent until this year when it was too late - had just been doing Scott's Weed 'n Feed bi-annually. Hopefully next year I can get it done right and have some semblance of a lawn.

I have almost 2 acres of lawn and I just keep my eyes open for crab grass while I mow with my walk behind mower. Once I determine where I have issues I take my heavy claw garden digging tool and dig it out roots and everything and toss them in my wheelbarrow. When I get a full load I dump them in the woods behind my home. I like to sprinkle some grass seed into the bare spots left by the weeds to help fill in those areas afterwards. It’s a lot of work but it keeps the amount of weeds low from year to year and I’m not dumping chemicals on my lawn.

LCN, did I screw up or what? I had an acre of trees, stumps and brush cleared, leveled the soil out as much as possible, started a new lawn seed growth going and I think the mold from last winter killed the lawn. So I started over, but now the killer crab grass and weeds has dominated the lawn. Didn't know I was mowing the seed back into the lawn. Lesson learned. I'll give it a go this time as to controlling the crab grass and get this lawn going again. Much appreciated on the experience you share with us. Next time I'll bag the seed / grass cut and dump it somewhere. MAN, I hate crab grass. Didn't know about the seed till now.

Thanks for the advice as far how Drive XLR8 works. It make sense now, the crabgrass is turning like an orange color. I thought for a minute that Drive herbicide was not doing it's job.

I gotta tell ya Mr.Lawn Care Nut you should create a classic section for this crab grass info; Near perfect delivery (language and board work.) Is there more to crabgrass that you could and probably have talked about? But of course. Trust me this is a gem.Warren at the start of the Boston Marathon in Hopkinton.

Crabgrass is the bane of my existence. Great informative video. I have a thick lawn & the lawn care company came out March 31 in central Ohio. Why am I still seeing crabgrass in my yard? It's exasperating!
