I think Villenueve turned Dune into a simple revenge story by not explaining the importance of the spice and he who controls it. He left out the importance of its conection to space travel, the Choam, etc., all key actors in novels to come. It's true that navigators do not appear in the novels until Messiah, but he should have paved the road for the future. The feeling I got was that the spice might as well been sugar for all it did for humanity in these films. As a matter of fact I went to the movies with my nephews and they completely missunderstood the importance of the spice (needless to say, its importance has repercussions until Chapterhouse: Dune!)

I read Dune as a 14-year-old, and saw the '84 movie on opening night as a 16-year-old with my then girlfriend and I was pretty dumbfounded and angry at what I saw on screen that night. Until seeing The Phantom Menace on opening night some decades later, this was my most disappointing theater experience. I re-watched Dune '84 as a 40-something and found the movie oddly charming, if not aggressively corny and campy. I found amusement in the cartoonish portrayal of the Harkonnens. I compartmentalized my book experience from the movie experience and found peace there. I absolutely LOVE Dune: Part 1 and Dune: Part 2. I actually think Denis' changes from the book make for a more compelling story and raise the stakes. I don't miss seeing a visual of the Navigators in the first two movies, and feel pretty certain we'll be introduced to them in Dune Messiah.

If you haven't yet, watch the 2012 Spicediver fan edit cut, it gets the Lynch version closer to the book. It is at ~3 hours long (the original theater release was 2.25 hours) & someone else later upscaled it to 4k, which the video resolution increase itself is another great addition to a 40-year old movie that used to only be at DVD 480 resolution for many years. Navigators do not fold space in the books. They use presience to find a clear path for the ships to travel at hyper light speed. Without them a speck of dust would eliminate one of the ships.
@Donnachaidh07
@Donnachaidh07 2 ай бұрын
Folding space is not actually traveling through space. It's arriving at where you want to go. The Navigators make sure the ships don't appear in a planet or sun, etc. Bob Lazar talks about the craft he worked on at area 51. Interesting, it traveled in this manner, so Herbert may have known someone in the secret space program. Even faster than light travel would take too long to travel, the vast distances of space. There is a lot of nuggets in SciFi that probably originated from the secret space Program. We supposedly have bases all over the solar system and the Nazis supposedly had a base on the moon in the '50s. David Wilcock said they were U Boats with anti gravity generators and Lazar said the craft that he was studying the propulsion system on had Delta and Omicron modes. One for cruising around and one for folding space, interstellar. It has three gravity generators, one pointed them where you wanted to go, all three for folding space. It would create a time space pocket around the craft that eliminated G forces and the outside environment. What's funny is the info is so wild that most think it is just fiction. This helps the secret be kept. Cheers and truth is stranger than fiction..lol

@CraigAlderson, ....hmmm...Navigators are folding actual physical space ibecause they are folding linear time. Einstein's special theory on general relativity shows space & time to be the same thing. If you can shorten one, you can shorten the other, simply stated. However, with respect to Dune, the reason for the Navigators was because "Venport" was losing such a high amount of cargo/ships because they didn't know if they were exiting into a sun, a planet, etc., using the Holzman Generator. According to the OG books, spice gave GNs a limited sense of a prescience view that allowed them to "safely" fold space from point A to point B.

Each has their appeal, and as, such no one will be satisfied because is not that DUNE in un-filmable, but George Lucas stole so much from DUNE to make Star Wars that limited the creativity development. In fact these were Frank Herbert's own complains working with David Lynch. @@BrentARJ ... Yes & that's the thing, Frank understood the nature of live-action adaptations, that it is not going to be accurate to the source material. It is trying to interpret words in a book of text into a visual graphic medium. Practically all film adaptations in history have proved this thus far, none of them have ever been accurate to their source. I think Watchmen 2009 got close, but still no cigar. Unsure about Gone With The Wind & One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest, as I never read those books. If I recall, Frank was amused that Lynch's film made the Baron float way up towards a ceiling, & Frank said he never thought of that when writing the first Dune book. Thus to see that Frank was incorporating something from the Lynch film into later books means that anything can happen, there is always room for expansion, because it's all made up anyway ... it's not real, it's fiction. 04/19/24

I first (partially) saw Dune (1984) at the age of 8 and it went over my head. As a teen, however - from maybe age 13 or so onward, it became my rainy day movie. I had moved from the Middle East back to America (Florida) with my parents and the environmental themes stuck with me. The manatees in the local lakes, rivers, and estuaries reminded me a little of the worms - an endangered species that were crucial to our ecosystem and a key part of where I lived. The references to Arab culture in the dialogue brought me back to life in the Middle East. The movie was my introduction to the work of David Lynch, and also to the Dune universe. That was a great section in 1984 Dune where Paul taught his men about them...and he can kill with a word....and then after killing Sting is cracked the floor _without_ the Weirding Module (just using his own voice control). The witch "voice" is a limited thing compared to being able to crack a foundation in a great hall ... with a word. Paul actual took the "voice" which he learned well and extended it and transcended it to the Weirding Module and sound into a major weapon to counter the Harkonnen's massive lasers and ships.

Lynch's adaptation despite its faults was more creative and daring. One critic described the new Dunes as "the packaging without the product" and while that is a bit harsh, I do feel the Denis could have taken more risks. For me, it lacks emotional depth. The new Dune should have done much more difficult things. Like Alia, Weirding Modules, and the different sub-species that have all evolved over 8 thousand years...each with their own pros/cons. The 1984 small intermission scenes discussing the families, planets and their relationships was important. Just as the novel book notes of the Princess Irulan at start of most chapters...were very helpful in the novels to get up to speed. They should have included more Princess Irulan throughout these movies and that would have been easy to do.

While denis villeneuve's verson is a fantastic film, and definitely worth the watch, to me, it deviated significantly from the original book a lot. (no Spacing Guild Navagators, no Alia of the Knive, the part with Gurney Halleck and Jessica, Mentats in general, Thufur Hawat's part was only barely touched upon in the 1st movie, but the most important part of his story should have been in the 2nd), I realize time contraints, but they could have given some parts less emphasis and touched on the important missing ones I mentioned. (Lady Fennring, Chani's parts were embellished upon and changed significantly from the book). David Lynch's movie, while had some flaws, was "truer" to the book (I wish Lynch could have gotten the go-ahead for 2 films, as he wanted). Deni's movie was enjoyable, but tp me wasn't Dune. IMHO. Dune is missing from the New Movie. No Navigators? Where's Thufur? Alyia born? So they have to have a 1000 KZfaq videos to explain what's happening. Even the Highliners are shown as a tunnel. They don't work like that. Travelling without moving, not in 2 systems at once. They load and unload at each system in routes, unless hired for specific missions. The viewers of the new movie won't understand the vision of starving people, because of the logistics, of Food and items to planets, isn't possible without spice. That gave Paul the power to take control. They made a brief abridged version. Just Graphical scenes with a smattering of story scattered between.

David Lynch's adaptation of dune follows the book hardly at all. One glaring aspect is his depiction of the navigator. Navigators are humanoid, because they are humans, but they're body parts have atrophied and mutated because the only thing they consume is spice. They drink it as a liquid and they breathe it. They have to live off spice completely in order to have the slight amounts of prescience that they get so that they can navigate ships across base and avoid hazards that can't be seen. Basically they have to see into the future to know how to travel the ship safely. That's kind of how it works. They were not ginormous. Several meter long worm looking things. They're described as looking like people with kind of fins instead of fingers because they've mutated because they don't eat or walk or do anything. They just sit in a tank and kind of float around. So they kind of have fish parts.

OKAY! The same thing that happened to you after that 1st scene, is the same thing that happened to me at 10 yrs old, at 2 am, on HBO after Conan the Destroyer. And I think we can agree that this new Dune does not capture the other worldliness that everybody gives it credit for. I was supposed to go to bed after Conan, but who the hell can go to bed after that opening scene? And it didn't seem like one of those movies that was gonna run everyday on HBO like Urban Cowboy or Smokey and the Bandit. I like Lynch's version better because of the visual details, the narrative details, the music, the inner monologues and just the way they talked! "It is by will alone I set my mind in motion".."the sleeper must awaken".."try looking in that place where u dare not look and u will find me there starting back at you." Now, put into proper context, I've never heard a more gangster line delivered in a movie, except for "everybody wanna go to heaven, but nobody wanna die" of course. If all one can say is a movie from 2024 looks better than a movie from 1984, that's not good enough. And make no mistake, the book was not on this director's mind, he was trying to outdo Lynch. He failed.

I loved the weirdness that Lynch captured and the film blew my mind around the same age I saw it as you. I had been playing Dune video games that found awesome and then the movie, colouring and composition was wonderful. Another fact is Frank Herbert loved that weirdness and Lynch film, huge fan of MacLachlan who impressed him for being a big Dune book fan and read them all. Herbert was in fact fuming with George Lucas because he felt Lucas ripped a lot from his work. Which Lucas did. Frank Herbert helped preproduction which included script involvement. He didn’t like the ending of Lynch film but I feel like Lynch was adapting the entire Dune story so was gonna mash in Messiah and Children of Dune etc. A lot of the Lynch haters in the DUNE fandom continue to deny Herbert view on Lynch film because they have an extreme hate for Lynch adaption for not being exact even though the new Dune films show it was in fact following the overall story and still did some elements better.

In book Spacing Guild charges extreme ammounts of money or Spice for transporting armies and heavy machinery (in Book Vladimir Harkonnen says, that whole operation to eliminated House Atreides leaves House Harkonnen Spice reserves almost empty), but in movie it seems like every great house keeps their own spice production machinery on their own planets for some reason, Harkonnens move their harvesters off planet and then returns them.

in the first book, the navigators are very mysterious. no one really knows how this navigator thing works. Villenuve does a very smart thing in the first 10 minutes of the first film. It explains perfectly how the Spice works and how indispensable it is in the empire. Then, in the scene of the herald of change, he shows us the political structure of the universe. There is the empire (the herald), a representative of the Bene Gesserit, and various representatives of the Guild. The only narrative importance that the Guild has in the first book is in the ending, when the two Navigators (still human), no longer seeing the future, can confirm that Paul is not bluffing. Villenuve omits this, and makes a mistake that he can fix with NO problem in the third. Since we will have a Navigator in the plot, it will take little to make it clear that their prescience was obscured by Paul. I remember that the Guild is generally a NEUTRAL political party. Carry anyone who pays well. Unlike the Bene Gesserit, the Guild is only interested in the spice, and maintaining a monopoly on it.

There are two major lecture keys that you can pretty much acknowledge in the Dune book; one is the way of the messiah, the journey of Paul Atreides as a Duke's son, to becoming a saviour to becoming a dark leader. The other, is the drug lecture, after all, the spice is a drug that makes everything possible in the universe, expands conscience, makes interstellar travel possible, and therefore, it's the most precious substance, and the spice itself is a big character in the book. Mr. Villeneuve chose to use the first lecture on his movie, and do more of the journey of the messiah to a deark leader instead of a movie about drugs, which makes more sense, in therms commercial therms in cinema. Lynch's movie concentrates way more on the second lecture, the drug and it's pivotal role in the narrative; but he also concentrates a lot on Paul's journey. Lynch's movie changed some stuff from the book, but it's a brilliant work of art, and more complete, in my opinion. The opening scene of Dune 1984 is amazing and i'm pretty sure that Frank Herbert loved it.

I absolutely love that these films have been made and the incredible depictions of place and character are peerless at times. This is Villeneuve's Dune, and new fans to seasoned aficionados should appreciate this contribution to our beloved tale. I think Villeneuve made Part 1 for book enthusiasts. There is much that isn't shown or exposed through dialog and that's fine with me. But through that film and Part 2, the gravity of the impacts of character's actions are difficult to parse or accept without showing how The Guild needs the spice melange, what measures they take to ensure access to it, and how their monopoly on space travel, and therefore galactic commerce, affects imperial socio-politics. Plus I miss the role CHOAM and the Landsraad play in the empire and what manifold streams of power Paul then possesses as he maneuvers into position. These things just aren't sufficiently revealed to give me a sense of reason behind characters' actions/reactions beyond maybe wealth, because Spice is evidently expensive. I am going to watch Part 2 again (and again), so perhaps subtle things I missed will be revealed.

Its Gods gift to man. Get cleanse and get a chance to see another side of life. all, without losing your life in the process. I quite enjoyed that week. Sleep i want, get to each your favorite dishes and now you can watch as many movies you want. Not questions asked. remember it was 3 day pass to heaven. A heaven for a 15 or 16 year old mindset. Now, i have a 50 plus year old mindset. What changes? only a different way of seeing the process over and over again. So, I saw this movie when i was high with fever. I saw miraculous things when I saw this movie. Its still my favorite. So I watched this movie in many states for those 3 days. lynch has the coolest Navigator look. I am not sure if it can be topped. Other missing 2024 DunePart2: Alia in the flesh and killing the Baron (difficult to do, but that is why it is so powerful), Weirding Modules (sound weapons). Missing 2022 DunePart1: Witch notes on underside leaves on plants/trees on Dune (left behind by prior Harkonnen witches), missing sub-species they need to show the entire different sub-species. The key point of Dune universe is that all things have a limit, even Paul and eventually Leto II in thousands of years. The witches are limited by not seeing the male line. The mentats have their limits. So the point of Dune is to show all lines are limited and eventually require transcendance...like David Bowman in 2001. In the final Dune books the ultimate genetically replicated version of Leto II found another space-time with beings on it waiting for him.

Navigators are folding actual physical space because they are folding linear time.

The decision to exclude the navigators from the movies matches Frank Herbert's decision to exclude them from the book.

A consideration of the Guild and the reliance on Spice across the board is incomplete without the consideration of what brought all of them to that point. The prehistory of Dune is the dire fight against the sentient machines that used to handle the interstellar travel and it's calculations. Thus the varied comments about machines but never "Smart" machines. There is of course the pre history of Arrakis itself also, in it's once lush biology, and water world nature, and the ecological disaster of bringing the worm creatures to that world. I can hope that Dennis will introduce some of those things further, I haven't seen part 2 yet so... :)

The guild navigators will be presented in the third movie as it is in the second book. There they will explain more about the guild

I love the new movies but they are like reading a synopsis of the book. While the 1984 version managed to include most of what was important. Of course critics didn't like it at the time because critics are supposed to hate science fiction they think. The series I thought were just bad they were boring

The scene was not shot for Villenueve's Dune/Dune Part Two because it is irrelevant to to overarching theme: beware of "saviors." Spice is only in the story as a metaphor for a limited resource that drives an economy. It could be almost anything. In this story, it happens to be spice.
