擂茶 does not translate as “thunder tea rice”, 擂茶 is traditional Hakka dish, in Hakka, 擂 means grind.

@WC Looh true 擂 means grind and has absolutely nothing to do with thunder, but Singapore ma...everything needs a branding and story in order to sell. If you "grind tea rice/Lei Char how to sell to mass market? plus all these Hakka owners themselves sure know 擂 is NOT thunder. So unfortunately profit above authenticity...a bit sad

Some smart alec put this up on Wiki. Lei cha (Chinese: 擂茶; pinyin: léi chá; lit. 'pounded tea'; pronounced [lěɪ ʈʂʰǎ]) or ground tea is a traditional Southern Chinese tea-based beverage or gruel that forms a part of Hakka cuisine.[1] In English, the dish is sometimes called thunder tea since "thunder" (雷; léi) is homonymous with "pounded" (擂; léi).[1] I'm a regular lei cha customer in Malaysia. Sometimes a stall would go out of business in my town, then I'd seek out another.
