Regenerative braking does not increase tire wear by itself. If you don't need to slow down and just want to coast like a gasoline car, then don't take your right foot completely off of the accelerator pedal. Just continue to add enough throttle if you want to maintain your current speed. Then both scenarios will wear the tires the same amount. If you are driving the electric car in a manner where you are braking too much due to regen, then that means you would also be applying the physical brakes in a gasoline car in a similarly excessive manner to make a fair apples-to-apples comparison.

have you tried using a tire with a bigger sidewall? i have the 19” sport rims, and after this winter in NY (which wasn’t even that bad) 3 out of 4 of my tires have damage to the sidewall or a bubble. car has only 17k miles

Got Pirelli elect for 20in induction on model Y and a dramatic improvement in road noise and ride quality from the f1 from factory. The f1 only lasted 20k miles also was like riding on rocks.

Have 56K on Factory 19" Sport Wheels Continental Procontact RX tires. 235/40R/19 Will get another 4-5,000 on them prior to replacement. Bit noisy on the road but they still look pretty good and feel good on the wet Washington State roads. Have driven them in snow as well over Snoqualmie Pass. Will probably keep with these as replacement.

I went to get tires rotated at tesla and they let me know that the tires that come with the cars are soft does better for the torque, but mines will need to be replaced at 22,000. I know nothing about tires, so thank you for explaining, I still don't know what to choose, the service guy told me tires that are harder won't make great traction for the car, my car is dual motor, so I still am not sure which tires to look at. So I'm here for recommendations.

Now the Hankooks look like the best option. Theres a lot of studies done on these on the Tesla forum. Hankook ion evo as. I just bought them so I’ll come back after a few thousand miles to give my thoughts.

IMO! When it come to purchasing tires specifically for a tesla with low profile tires (21" rims in my case) the most important thing is reliability. Run flats are a must, right next to a tire that has the proper load rating for your EV (but as i found out some manufacturers lie). I went with the only tire i could find that was a step higher in the recommend load range category, which were the parelis pz4 because run flat options were very expensive. Ive had cheap tires in the past 250$ that had the load rating for my tesla that popped 2 tires from a seemingly small pothole that my previous 400$ bald tires would've had no problem whatso ever running over. As for grip, i don't worry at all what im getting, i feel very safe in my awd tesla.

I have a Model Y Performance with the 21" Uberturbine wheels - that has given me so far 293 wh/mi avg over ~12 Miles. But to maximize range I am switching to 19" EV01+ tires from the Canadian company Fast EV. And I am in this conundrum at the moment of choosing between Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4 OR the CC2's. I live in the DC Metro area - where we have snow occasionally on the ground for a few days every year. Blizzards occur once every 7 years or so.

Per Tire Rack website, Michelin Primacy MXM4 has only 8/32" tread depth. Michelin Pilot Sport AS4 and just about every other tire is 10/32". Something to consider.

Extra wear on EV tires has nothing to do with regen. If anything would be less wear due to smoother slowing and stopping compared to just using brakes. Yes EVs slow when you lift off the gas while ICE cars coast. But you never lift off in an EV unless you want or need to slow down. The extra wear is simply due to more weight and power.

This is Incorrect. Regen slows the car every time you step off the accelerator - just like stepping on the brakes. On a rwd Tesla, the front wheels coast to slow down during regen, as only the rear tires are slowing the car down.

@@jbreakstone Is feathering the go pedal that foreign of a concept for people? The only time I take my foot off the accelerator is when I WANT to slow down. Otherwise I would lose my lunch from jerking all day long. The FWD/RWD could be an issue, yes, regardless of what causes regen to engage.

The only way regen would affect tire life is in a rear wheel drive car, with braking and accelerating both done primarily by the back wheels. But my 2018 RWD Model 3 has hit 36k miles on the OEM tires. I really think it's all weight and driving style that makes them wear early.

I am torn between CC2 and PSAS4. I am planning to put them on a Kia EV6 GT. You didn't mention it, but is your Model 3 the Performance model or does it have the AB? My concern with the CC2's is that they just wouldn't stand up to the power of the EV6 GT, but if you have a M3P or AB, it should be close enough. I had CC2's on my RAV4 Prime and it would spin the fronts on all but perfect pavement. My Acura RDX on the other hand using CC2's was glued to the road. The 545# of torque in the EV6 GT just has me kindof leery. What's your take?

I wish I had the performance model! Has AB. I can't speak to the EV6 GT. What's the weight of the RAV4 Prime? Curb weight of my M3 is around 4,200 lbs. Lots of different factors to consider.

I only got 12,000 miles on the rear tires of my Model 3 SR+ (rwd) in South Florida. I replaced them with General Tire 235/45R-18 ALTIMAX RT43 XL. These tires are rated for 65,000 miles, MUCH more than the OEM Michelin Primacy MXM 4. The tread starts at 11/32, compared to 9/32 for the Michelins. Only cost me $177 each, compared to $277 for the OEM. When I first had them installed, I noticed some traction control kicking in under hard acceleration, but as they wore in, I doesn’t seem to happen much anymore. These may not be the right tire for a dual motor or M3 performanceI, as this is not a soft compound/high performance tire, but for me, I it works well.. I think these tires are the best bang for the buck for a Tesla Model 3. I am hoping to get about 3x the life out of these, compared to OEM. Road noise is probably slightly more, but I honestly can’t tell. A plus for me is that they are made in the USA…. My two cents…..

Nice overview video. Hoping you can clarify what differentiated the CrossClimate2 from the Pilot AS 4 for you. Just as you did, I'm considering both the Michelin Crossclimate2 and the Michelin Pilot Sport AS 4 for my 2018 Tesla Model 3. I live in North Florida, and I don't track the car or require demanding performance from it, and my OEM tires are almost worn out at 13,000 miles. I suspect I will only get 15k to 18k out of them. Not sure why they are wearing so quickly, given my fairly mundane daily driving habits. In any case, can you say why you chose the CrossClimate2 over the Pilot Sport AS 4? I can't seem to find videos directly comparing the 2, but it looks to me like the Pilot Sport AS4 has better wet and dry stopping distance (by about 1 car length), better speed rating, but less tread life (45k vs. 60k treadwear warranties). Not sure the speed rating matters to me at all, so it really comes down to tread life vs. stopping distance (since I will rarely - but might - need to use them in snow). Given the lousy tread life I am getting out of the OEM tires, I am tempted to go with the Crossclimate2 since they seem to have about 30% better tread life. Can you share your reasoning for your choice of the CrossClimate 2 over the PS AS 4s, and any thoughts you have on the trade offs in my situation?

When you are reading all those tires comparison, they are based on ICE cars which will be different then on EV. I read one of the review from Michelin Pilot Sport AS 4, it can lose as high as 20% range. The suggest that if you can wait a bit, Michelin is bringing Pilot Sport EV which could gain as much as 36.7 miles.

These did not wear out quicker than the stock ones. Unfortunately, I blew out two of them about 6 months ago while traveling - my fault. I had hit a enormous pothole. So, now I have an entirely new set of 4 of these again, which are continuing to hold up as expected.

Cross Climate 2’s seem to result in too much range loss for most drivers who really want to travel in their Tesla, especially if you might find yourself in cold, windy, or remote regions (where chargers are often few and far between). Tesla owners pay a lot of money for the higher range of our cars so unless you have a to degrade that range for a good reason be careful about doing so w a tire like the CC2. I’m a 5 year S100D owner and live where it snows 100+ inches a year. As an avid skier I frequent drive when the roads are more suited for snowmobiles than cars. After significant research into a variety of premium tires I decided to replace the OEM Goodyears with the Continental Pure Contact LS. They are my summer and winter tire and perform respectably in the snow with my car’s all wheel drive and traction control. Nearly identical efficiency to the original tires that came on my Tesla. Thanks for the insight!! Being int he midwest, I have yet to have an issue with range. I do notice a drop when it gets significantly colder ('colder' is relative here). However, like I said, no issue driving through Indiana, Tennessee, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, etc. on these new tires. No issue with range. However, that's in clear conditions.

I'm averaging about a 7% decrease in range, or increase in kwh used, depending on how you look at it. I only have about 8,000 miles on them at this point though.

Another consideration is that if you need Tesla roadside assistance to replace a tire, and you’re not running stock tires, they will probably make you replace all 4 instead of just 1.

Everytime i looked at the cross climate 2 its says they dont fit tesla but it has the same size speed rating is just a V but i see people still have them. Called pep boys they said it needed to be a low tire

@DarkHorseTSLA thank you, I had ordered them a month ago,they are fine now. Pepboys also got the alignment wrong said they couldn't do it because it was off by 3 degrees. Took it in to tesla authorized body shop for other repairs and they said the alignment was fine. So I think lack of experience or equipment with pep boys. At least my location. They installed tires fine on my Ford fusion no problem.

I’m trying and I can’t get them in western Canada. Back ordered with no ETA according to Hankook rep and all local suppliers. Im at 46,122 on my M3 dual motor on my stock Continentals, 19". I drive around 50ish miles per day and I do NOT drive like a grandma. I've been reading extensively through other reviewers and it seems to be the consensus that Michelins die faster...25-35k, and continentals do roughly 40k-50k. We're comparing STOCK tires, btw.

@@johnk6736 I have 18 inch cuz I wanted aero wheel covers or so I thought lol ( I don’t use them lol) tesla told me during standard tire rotation at 19k miles that it wasn’t worth rotating as tread levels have dropped to the point of urgent tire replacement. That was about 3k miles ago, tires still hold up well but I would say Michelin-while excellent for performance, handling,etc don’t have the durability but I guess it’s a pick and choose thing. Can’t have performance and durability without paying a pretty penny. Makes no sense tho to put high performance on a tire you’re auctioning off with aero wheels to seemingly save you $$$

@@butskiiueepp1625 Yea, like I said, that seems to be the consensus. Michelin SLIGHT better performance and Continental just all around durable and save you $$$. At 46,122, I've NEVER rotated my tires....since dual motor, I figure they would pretty much equally wear out same? And they still have tiny weeny bit of tread left. I am looking around to get a new set of 4s, since recent software update detects "irregular tread level", I guess meaning go get some new tires...

LOVE having the CC2's on my Model 3. Since they are a true "all year" tire with an actual winter rating, I am not sure you can beat them - especially if you live in a true 4-season climate.

I would have to check the numbers, but on all of my usual commute drives in dry weather I lose *maybe* 1% over the old stock tires. In the very cold and wet maybe 1% - 2% from before but the better wet/cold grip is way worth it. @@robertp2116

Total BS about regenerative braking affecting tires wear. It’s the same as braking with brakes, but you are braking with your motor - tires don’t care.

...And braking with brakes wears down your tires. The mechanism for which the tires are slowed down is irrelevant. Regardless of whether it's friction between the brake pad and rotor, regenerative braking, or a stick in between my spokes, the tires must create friction with the pavement thus wearing down the rubber. Please reconsider your comment or enlighten me with more sound logic.
