Buying a great tripod is a must for anyone serious about video or photography. For anyone who travels a small compact lightweight but strong and stable tripod is a must. What a great review. I 've been looking for a travel tripod for my landscape photography which is both sturdy, light and portable and this seems to fit the bill. So good to see a review actually done out in the field in the the type of terrain I may actually visit, and see the product in action. Just ordered one, although here in the UK there seems to only one supplier at present. The best deal I could find was from the Netherlands..

Great review, but when you're in a beautiful environment you might want to give us some idea of where you are. Also, you might want to invest in a pair of hiking boot -- waterproof.

I live in Alaska and almost all my videos are filmed in locations I go to here, I do use waterproof hiking boots now! Cheers

I really wouldn't call that a "travel" tripod. I have the iFootage monopod version of that and I had to pack into my suitcase because it's so large. And just the monopod itself, no tripod footing or ball head.When attached to my backpack (35L Osprey), it sticks up over my head enough that I can actually stick a camera on it for a different point of view. If you want a better "travel" tripod, go with the new Peak Design tripod. It's much smaller that the one you just showed.

True it is smaller but it’s also much more expensive and doesn’t have a fluid head option.

Have you submerged it in water or used it near the beach, ocean or anywhere where there is salt water? My last tripod started rusting in the joints after i submerging the feet in water.

I have had it in water but not too much in salt water. The few times I have taken it near/in the ocean I always make sure to rinse it with fresh water after to get the salt off.

I am now streaming on Sunday at 3pm Alaska time which is 11pm UTC so depending on where you are you can convert from there lol. Hopefully I'll catch you on the next stream!

soon as i saw the locks on the legs were not those dang twisty ones it caught my interest. i have been looking for a small one for my hikes. does it come smaller than that also? i have been using the same tripod since 1992. been thinking of upgrading.

It does not. this is the smallest one they make. the reason I got a tripod is I'll be adding a slider here soon and I needed the stability they bring. This one folds down to 20" (4.5lbs) but you might consider their monopod which is getting rave reviews too. I plan to add that down the road too but we will see. You might look into that as well

Hi Jake, would you get the get the TC5 or the Peak Design tripod or another if you had to do it again? I want to be out hiking around and do what you do. I am a complete newbie, but I have picked up a Sony A7SIII and want to start living my dream. Thank you in Advance!

If you do lots of travel the peak design is excellent and really is hard to beat at this point. It's my current go to for most everything like this

what could be good tripod while vlogging during hiking, to avoid camera shake? I noticed even when you walk on the rocks while talking, I don't see any camera shake, so how do you get that?! how do you avoid that camera shake while walking on rocks?!!! please and thank you for your response

I use the Peak Design Travel Tripod a lot but the reason there was no shake in this was I was using a gimbal on the camera

Thanks! I'm using this Arca Swiss plate: geni.us/HqCFlb but it is attached to this: geni.us/bBQJJ which I use with my gimbals for quick swap between camera or gimbal on the tripod

@@JakeSloan but what is the base unit you are attaching to the QR on the K5 head? I have ordered this same tripod and head, and I have a Kirk arca base. That has a 3/8" screw hole in it, trying to figure out how to mount it on the K5 so my camera's arca plate will work with this rig. Thanks!

Hi Jake...In the opening seconds of the video, the tripod appears in the background and it looks like the Komodo fluid head will tilt back 90 degrees. If so, could I use an arca swiss clamp like you have and be able to shoot portrait still shots? I shoot both video and photos and am looking for a single solution that will provide both fluid head movements for video and portrait orientation for photo stills. Thank you for creating this video. Its very helpful as I'm seriously considering the Gazelle tripod.

It does go 90 degrees but you def have to lock it down that way but it would work. The other option would be get a ball head with a 3/8" mount to use on the tripod and either swap just the heads out as needed. It's a great tripod to be sure. I have put mine through a lot and its still going strong! let me know if you have more questions. Cheers

Have you tried their ifootage monopod instead ? This should be much lighter as well ?

It would be much lighter but in most the places I shoot the wind is too strong for mono pods. I have since added the Peak Design Carbon Fiber tripod to my kit for when I am hiking and it is excellent for this. My iFootage still gets lots of use though

Thats this thing here: geni.us/bBQJJ (you need at least 2) and its great for being able to quickly put my gimbal on and off the tripod or my camera. Plus I can still use the small tripod that came with my gimbal without having to unscrew anything!

lol you and me both!! I spent way to many years using cheap tripods. I didn't realize just how much better a decent tripod is to use until I got this one...
