Been using this for a year now. Pros: easy set up, cool tech. Cons: once you have several electrical equipments turned on, it will cause interference with the data transfer via the power line and your internet speed will degrade significantly. Also, the second outlet will broadcast a different SSID from your main router. Conversely, with a repeater, its the same SSID. P/s: you're not supposed to place an extender/repeater where there's barely signal. You're supposed to place it halfway through, and it works like a charm.

I've been looking for this for a little while now. My granddaddy used to have an intercom system in the '70s that used this same technology. So, unfortunately it isn't new, but still is cool. Surge protectors and transformers tend to impede the signal. The only downside that I know of for this product is that susceptible to power surges or lightning strikes. Otherwise this product is GREAT! Thanks again for the video.

Thanks for the video! Probable max of 100-200Mbps over power lines in older homes, regardless of the version you buy. How is your house wired (is the power "dirty" or "conditioned", are the two locations on isolated circuits, etc.)? It makes a difference as to whether the two will connect, at what speed, and whether a sudden spike might "take out" one of the devices. I use a pair of slightly older models from the same manufacturer in my somewhat older home and they have worked very well for over 5 years...

Some sharing, these extenders are really efficient...currently i solved my office wifi issue with 4 units of TPLink Extender hooked up to 4 separate AP. Bare in mind that you should not move these Extender from one point to another as it would have overlaps(meaning plug one Extender which is assigned to one AP/ROuter and bring them to another point)....which will cause slowness to your network. Ensure all individual Extenders are set to those individual AP/Routers...and place them within range to get the best out of them :) Hope this helps bits.

If you had an old router you could have used the DD-WRT firmware to configure it as a repeater, capture the signal from the main router and rebroadcast to dead spot. the latest video on my channel shows how to easily achieve this. +Skye Cendroski TP Link AV200 WIFI Powerline extender, you also have the AV500 that allows powerline speeds of up to 500 Mbps (instead of 200 Mbps on the AV200). I really recommend it, very good.

Does this work with a cable modem combo?
@thecolonel4551
@thecolonel4551 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, but you need a multi port hub, because most cable modems have only one port, that is used by your wireless router. If your cable modem has a built in wireless lan, it should have a free cat5 port for a connection.

These work great, i stumbled upon your video of trying to send wifi to a barn or shed thats not running on the same circuit breaker. Any ideas for that? One thing i would suggest is not plugging that into a powerstrip/surge protector. It will scramble the signal. You should have faster speed plugging that in directly into the wall.

The reason why you shouldn't plug it into a surge protector is that is can slow the speed of the powerline connection and therefore ur not getting what u paid for which is why they say its best not to. i know this from a personal experience :-)

Say these powerline adapters are rated at 500Mbps. If he plugs it directly into a wall socket he may get say 250Mbps. If he plugs it into a extension lead it may slow down his powerline network to 150Mbps. 150Mbps is still more than enough to share his 30Mbps internet connection. So in such a case it really doesn't matter where it is plugged in. Also note that the ethernet ports on these powerline adapters are only rated as fast ethernet (100Mbps), so as long as your powerline speed is above that you're not really losing anything. So if you have a free wall socket you should use it but if not plugging it into an extension lead is often okay too depending on how fancy the extension lead is. Just give it a go and test the speeds :)

Quinn wifi signals don't travel through power lines, they travel through the air. These little boxes grab a weaker wifi signal transmitting information, take the same exact signal and make it stronger.

Actually Andrew, nothing about what Quinn said is false. What you said on the other hand, is inaccurate. These are Broadband over Ethernet adapters, which utilizes your existing power lines to carry 802.3 Ethernet (wired) signals. What you are thinking of is WiFi range extender, which looks very similar.

fasthandsmalone No no no 😂😂 I laughing so hard at people that don’t understand this. Here I will explain it better. Internet does NOT go though your power lines those power lines only supply power. There are other cables in your house that can have ethernet or some older homes have phone lines. If you have a house phone that’s usually what you plug that phone base into. There are other cables/wires that can carry internet. Those are called CAT cables (ex. CAT 5e, CAT5, CAT6, CAT7 and so on). The higher number you get at the end of the “CAT” means it has faster transfer speeds but that also means they are more expensive and bigger around because they put more wires in the cable. There are other units called “WiFi ranger extenders” or “WiFi extenders”. Those devices can be set to do many things. Option 1 is: To be a repeater this means that it will grab your poor WiFi connection wirelessly and give it a boost to what speed you would have as if you were standing right next to your WiFi router and modem. Option 2 is: Set it up to be what called an AP. This mode allows you to take your wired connection (say you have a CAT cable plugged into your router and it goes through the walls of your house or office and comes out of the wall that kind of looks like a wall plug but the holes look different than just plugging your computer or phone into the wall to charge. This allows you to take that internet connect from the wall and plug it into the device or WiFi extender and it will act a router too. You don’t want to do this if you already have a WiFi network. Go back to option 1 if you just want to boost it. Option 3 is: Router mode this is kind of like the AP mode but it is a little bit different. If you do not already have a router that came with your internet provider you can use this to connect to the WAN. The WAN is what brings the internet from the big cable out by the street into your house and then the cable comes out of the wall. Plug this cable into the “WAN” spot on the WiFi extender or device. Then the WiFi extender will be turned into a modified router but will still work just like a router. The other port by the WAN port should be called “LAN”. This port allows you to plug in your computer or NAS hard drive to the WiFi extender or router. Take one end of the ethernet cable and plug it into the WiFi extender and then take the other end and plug it into your computers ethernet port. Your computer should automatically see that the ethernet cable is plugged in. If not you should be able to find a KZfaq video that explains it or contact your manufacturer of the computer or NAS hard drive. If you do not have a ethernet port on your computer you will have to get a dongle. There are many thunderbolt or USB dongles that have the ability to let your computer have wired or ethernet internet access. Please leave any questions or comments down below and I will try to get to them as soon as I can. Have a great day and I hope this helped people understand more of what these devices do!

(Just seeing this video now in 2020 after my Dad sent it to me.) What he's describing specifically is a Powerline Extender, not a Wifi Range Extender. This device extends the network signal from the router via the Ethernet port, rather than extending the router's native wifi signal. I have almost the exact same one he does (mine's an AV500, the Amazon link is for an AV600). I use it to send Wifi to my detached garage behind the house, where regular wifi extenders didn't work so well. It works fairly well for this purpose, getting around 30 Mbps in the garage (but my incoming Internet is over 100, and that's what I get from my router's native wifi signal inside the house). A few caveats & tips: 1) Most Powerline extenders don't come with the wifi "repeater", only a network repeater with an Ethernet port. You either have to buy the Wifi part as a separate unit, or as part of a kit. Those that are specifically broadcast their own wifi signal (such as this one) are a bit more expensive. 2) IMPORTANT: The "transceiver" part that is connected to your router, SHOULD be plugged into an electrical outlet that is on the SAME circuit breaker as where you wish to place the repeater. This gives the best possible network transmission speed and quality. It MAY also work so long as where the "transceiver" part is plugged in, is at least on the same side (bus) of your electrical panel as the outlet where you plug in the repeater. (I think this is how mine was until I moved my router to a different room.) It MIGHT POSSIBLY (MAY OR MAY NOT) work if the outlets are connected to different sides of the electrical panel. Even if it does, it won't work nearly as well and certainly won't give decent transmission speed. 3) For wifi inside the house, the most effective fix is to place the wifi router itself as high in the house as possible. I used to have my router in the lowest level inside my house (because that's where the cable came in, so I had to put it near my cable modem to connect it), and I had to use regular wifi extenders (not this powerline type) to strengthen the wifi signal in my living room. I later managed to find a coax cable running upstairs, so I moved my cable modem & router to an upstairs closet. Now I get well over 100 Mbps in my main floor living room, with no extenders (except the powerline extender to feed to my garage). 4) Straight-line distance isn't always the determining factor. When I had my router in the basement, it was at about the same straight-line distance to my living room as it is now from the upstairs bedroom closet. (The closet is almost directly above where I had it in the basement; my living room is on the main floor.) But moving it higher made a big difference because of fewer obstructions, less dense materials, etc. And ironically, the signal is actually a bit weaker in the next upstairs bedroom (figure that one out; I think it has to do with wavelength). 5) If after moving your router higher and away from obstructions, you still have poor wifi signal/speed in certain areas of the house, a regular inexpensive Wifi Range Extender may be in order. I have at least three (3) of the TP Link RE220 units, and these have an available "high-speed" mode that the user can configure. When so configured, it uses one band (say, the 2.4 Ghz) to connect to the router, and then broadcasts a signal on the other (say 5 Ghz) band. This splits the workload between the two bands, rather than both bands having to communicate with the router at the same time. (I'm no shill for TP-Link, and I'm guessing other brands have this feature too. It's also called "backhaul".)
