I just found out today , yaesu is trying to get out of fixing your radio if you have problems with you Display this is the email i got ,NOTE: Effective December 1, 2022, New non-warranty labor rates will apply. Amateur radio division - $90 per hour plus parts and shipping. Marine radio division- $75 flat rate plus shipping. I dont think that right, so even if you use a monitor with dvi and you have problems are they going to charge us if its under warranty ,number 1 that's yaesus problem , they should stand behind their product, I use a monitor with DVI , But it says nothing about not being able to hook up to hdmi in the manual , Love your video , be Careful yaesu owners ,I just purchased another ftdx 10 trhen find this out bummer,

Figures after researching radios for a few months I settled on this radio. I pulled the trigger today 1/23/22. I didn't come across anything wrong with this radio except a few complaining how fast menus close before any input is made. Then I come across your video. It really doesn't seem to pay off researching anymore. I mean I spent hours some days comparing radios. Now I feel like I just wasted my time, again. Thanks for putting this out there. I can't believe no one else has said anything about this seems how Yeasu themselves no about it.

Yeah sadly I did the same. Luckily I was able to find that old monitor at the pawn shop for 35$. You can call Tim at yaesu tech support and he will tell you how many are coming in for repair. But he recommends the cabledecon 3-1 multiport adapter. However it will not work Bc it’s not bidirectional. You will really love the radio Luther. Aside from the menu issue you mentioned and the dvi board issue, it’s a top 2 receiver. Even above the flex 6700 after Sherwood revisited the 6700.

1) DVI-to-HDMI converters are just pin-to-pin wiring. There's no converter chip involved. They're need not be active, although perhaps some are. 2) Assuming all this is true, then why doesn't Yaesu simply start selling 'approved' cables and/or adapters? It's amazing that such a simple issue with such a common interface has so many people flummoxed. By now there should be a precise explanation of exactly what's going on.

The annoying point is that the Chip in the back of the Yeasu is a HDMI Chip, but if Yaesu put a HDMI Port on the back it would have cost Yaesu a few dollars in royalties, the small SMD fuse that burns out costs so little that you can buy aboy 20 for $1 but Yaesu will earn more repairing then in the long run, it is also better to run a DVD-D Single Link Cable.

I don’t think Yaesu anticipated an issue with DVI-D to HDMI converters. Apparently they aren’t all made the same. It’s like with the LED bulb issue for our home. Certain ones, from China, generate RFI and others don’t. The common belief is that certain converters are powered in such a way that it causes a voltage incompatibility with the FTdx10 monitor port. The problem is that when the components driving the port finally fail, the transceiver has to be sent to Yaesu for repair. I read an account by one FTdx10 owner that his converter cable seemed to work, but 6 months later his monitor went blank. He sent his FTdx10 to Yaesu and they replaced the main board. Yaesu told him to use DVI-D to DVI-D or his warranty will be voided. I certainly wouldn’t want to sacrifice my 3-year warranty over an external monitor, especially when native DVI-D monitors can still be purchased. Some users have reported no problems with their cables after a year, but I wouldn’t chance it. I happened to have a native DVI-D monitor available and I’ve been using it for 11 months with no issues. Why did Yaesu use DVI-D versus HDMI? DVI-D was probably less expensive to implement and for 800x600 resolution, even DVI-D is overkill. 73, de N4HNH

The shielding on cheap HDMI cable is not very good and I’ve found that DVI cables are better. A possible solution is to do the same thing we do for stray RFI in the USB cables, wind them through a ferrite for a few turns close to the FTDX10. I do that on all digital cables in my shack and seldom have any problems. I’m going to buy the FTDX10 because it looks to be the best on the market in that price range.

Yeah I think the issue is the return voltage on some hdmi or dvi monitors. Although this continues to happen with even dviD monitors, yaesu has yet to release a statement. It is the best in its price range currently. I like the ftdx3000 layout a lot better but the scope on the 10 is much better. I can’t tell an ounce of difference on rx with the roofing filters. Replying to the Official Yaesu comment. If using the wrong cables blows a fuse.. Then surely the trip back to yaesu would only to be for a fuse replacement... Kindly explian to me why when I was using the correct cable my radio display went not once but twice... There I was without my radio the 1st time for almost 3 months, and I had only owned my radio for 3 weeks (Jan 2021). I got my radio back eventually and all was well until 4 weeks later when it done the exact same thing. After speaking with yaesu UK repair guy he explained he had to fit a brand new ENTIRE Board both times. Said it wasn't a matter of just replacing 1 output/part. 3 weeks ago my mates did the exact same thing using a dvi d to dvi d lead. Surely there had to be some explanation to the customers who have purchased these radios. I actually feel sorry for the guys that buy these radios second hand and have no warranty.. The amount of money they are going to loss on repairs will be colossal!!!

I can't find any reports on the Internet regarding DVI output failures in either the FTDX101 series or the FTDX10. I have both radios and they use a DVI-to-HDMI cable with no converter built in and no problems encountered. No converter is necessary as the signals in both standards are the same and fully electrically compatible (CEA-861 standard). While I won't rule out that the DVI output may be failing on a few radios, I think it's highly unlikely that this is problem the larger body of owners needs to worry about.

Thanks Rick. There are a several hundred on the ftdx Facebook support group. Yaesu also will give you some realistic numbers. Some monitors are producing larger voltage to the dvi boards in the rig. Ie over 250ma. There is a fuse on the board. I’m also confused about why some rigs are affected sooner rather than later. After talking to yaesu , they have no plans to improve the problem or make a service notice about it. You are correct about the converter. As far as I know there is no such one that exist as of yet. I have viewed a few videos of people making their own.

@@JayN4GO I'm not on Facebook anymore, which would explain why I didn't see those posts; however, I find it strange that my searches failed to produce even one such reported failure outside of the Facebook support group. Is this a problem with the 5V supplied by the radio on Pin 14, as in the monitor drawing too much power? The specs call for the DVI port to be able to provide a minimum of 55ma and that the monitor draw no more than 50ma. I would assume the fuse in the radio is there to protect its DVI circuitry in case a monitor attempts to draw more than 50ma. Is it not doing its job or blowing too late? I would expect Yaesu to use essentially the same circuitry in the FTDX101D/MP and I find no reports of the DVD port failing for those models either. Don't get me wrong - it's not that I'm insisting that no problem exists in this area. I'm trying to understand the nature of the failures which are alleged to be occurring and how to best defend against it. If it's indeed a case of an HDMI monitor drawing too much power from the radio's DVI port, a monitor with a DVI port could just as easily draw too much power as well. It feels like Yaesu perhaps isn't taking this seriously because it is a problem caused by an out-of-spec HDMI monitor, although their protection circuitry (fuse) should still protect the port. To do otherwise would be especially poor design work. 73 de W7YP

This is good to know, I have been looking at the FTDX10. Native DVI seems to be the way to go (I'm not sure why they went DVI to begin with, those outputs haven't really been used much in the past 10 years). In my few years in the AV industry, passive converters have kind of always been a problem. I'm wondering if an active converter would work better? They are typically an order of magnitude more expensive, but definitely work better and last longer.

I read that HDMI licensing is per unit while DVI-D is a one-time license fee. Since DVI-D is older, it is no doubt less expensive all the way around, I can imagine Yaesu reasoning to use up the old stock, shave a few $$$ more off the price, and save all those ports from the landfills. Yaesu seemed to intentionally want to introduce it at $100 less than the price of the FTdx3000D. As soon as I saw that, I said goodbye to the FTdx3000D. Three months later it was gone. I shot a video about it for my channel. It was sad to see the FTdx3000D go. It was a great radio, but the FTdx10 admittedly beats it in the most important categories. Even the DVI-D is still waaay overkill for a 800x600 resolution. So I suspect it was Yaesu finding a place to cut cost and keep the price under $1,700. 73, de N4HNH

I'm using an old Dell 4x3 VGA display with an active DVI to VGA converter on the back of my dx10. So far, so good, no problems for me. As for Yaesu, there is a such mixed bag of success and failure that I still think it's either a batch of bad chips or some implementation problem. Until the Yaesu engineers in Japan weigh-in with a TSB, we'll never really know. I've not heard of the same problem affecting Yaesu's flagship FTdx101 transceiver.

To clear up the DVI cable issue once and for all here is the data and details of options for cables to be used. >>>>>> Bottom line if the converter power consumption is too high(see formula below) it will blow the radio’s internal monitor fuse and the means a trip back to Yaesu. The issue with connecting a non DVI-D to DVI-D monitor to your radio is your radio has a 150mA internal protection fuse that protect the main-board when a high voltage DVI-D to HDMI/VGA adapter is used. Yaesu will NEVER admit there is a PROBLEM with the video-output ! REMEMBER the infamous ZEBRA-DISPLAY problem on the Yaesu FT-857 non D and D ??? They had a BIG PROBLEM with a chip on the ribbon cable leading to DISPLAY. Til the end of production 2 years ago, only the last 2 or 3 produced batch had a NEW CHIP on the display ribbon.I was the lucky one to buy one of the latest but i buy-ed even a full display unit for just in case, with knobs and encoder. First recomandation, NEVER connect or disconnect the cable between TRX and MONITOR before POWER OFF both. Second, buy shielded cable, even the connectors should be properly shielded (aluminium case). Third, cable must have ferrite beads on both ends. Give the RFI no chance to return in video-output connector.

Yes I had the 857 that went zebra on me also. Some people could apply heat to the ribbon at the connector but that was a no go for me. 250$ replacement screen. That’s when I saw the shift in old engineers passing away and young hair brained taking their place. Hehe

Straight from Tim Factor....In his text to me he says that there is a fuse (!) that ?protects? the board from over current. its limit is 150mA..... and DVID to HDMI adapters may send an overcurrent thru and fry the fuse...requiring the repair. Its stupid, bean counter ish as we spend 5 grand for a rig and they could amortize the 19 cent fee to HDMI per unit very easily. but they don't.. so he sent a fix that requires TWO adapters to connect the HDMI monitor to the 101....but, when i received the two units, they both had female connectors, requiring me to get yet a third adapter maie to male.... I've yet to confirm this all works as I'm looking for a DVID monitor now...

Hi Rich! Yes I’ve been ran in circles by Tim to point I stopped. I even email yaesu Japan in Japanese. The cable decon shouldn’t work at all as it’s not bi directional. Maybe you can let me know how it does for you with all the adapters. I find it odd that the 7610 also has a dviD output and everyone I know runs a hdmi to dvi cable with the 7610s. I understand the technical aspect of the 150ma on board fuse but I’m not sure why they didn’t take the same basic approach Icom did. Or any other electronic device in history that converts from dviD to hdmi. I would just like people to be aware of this before purchasing. Had I known this prior, I’d opted for the k3s. I found a monitor with dviD but it looks pretty horrid. The aspect ratio is awful as well. The rig has a phenomenal rxer. But there are things I wish yaesu would address. Let me know if the cable decon works for you. You’re monitor probably won’t recognize the input if I’m guessing. 73

@@davidc5027 there’s definitely ground tracing or voltage running through some of the adapters. The board shows 0 ohm resistors which are basically jumpers. Yaesu told me that they don’t even know why exactly. Maybe some of the Chinese hdmi to dviD adapters are faulty but unlikely all of them. It is signal to signal trace on the cables. I know that a few devices that used hdmi to dvi in the past had a small rep for burning things up. Tim at yaesu said they are coming in for repair daily but didn’t elaborate on the exact cause. Apparently the engineers don’t know why either. I’m just curious as to how many units will come in before they say anything at all. Even a warning sticker over the dvi port would help a bit I would think. I’ve found it’s like beating a dead horse with yaesu. Unfortunate Bc this is a great rig.
