In this episode we explore the story of the man who first spotted the iceberg that sank the Titanic. On the evening of April 14th 1912, lookout Fredrick Fleet shouted those now three famous words of "Iceberg right ahead". From a sad beginning, Fredrick Fleet lived a troubled life and carried the burden of the Titanic with him.
This episode contains footage used from Titanic, Honor and Glory, an upcoming game that recreates Titanic in incredible detail. Check it out and subscribed to their channel for further details.

Sad tale. Fleet wasn't to blame and suffered enormously for simple bad luck and circumstance beyond his control. RIP

What an honor you’ve done to his memory. Been a Titanophile since I was a boy, but I never knew how desperately sad Mr. Fleet’s entire life truly was. Our world has more Freddie Fleets than we would like to realize - “if it wasn’t for this,” “but for that” - regret, guilt, these are evolutionarily necessary but potentially toxic emotions. God rest Frederick Fleet. It wasn’t your fault. None of it.

Yes. If something similar happened today all involved would be given immediate psychological care to help them process what they went through. No one knew then. There are many survivors who committed suicide after the Titanic went down. Too many.

Well, the crew members were very undertrained and underequipped for lifeboat filling and lowering. There was supposed to be a lifeboat drill right before the voyage began, but it was cancelled out of rushing to start the delayed maiden voyage and overconfidence that the Titanic would never sink.

I still think you use your eyes first to spot the object, then you use the binoculars to confirm it. So I think Fred Fleet was not to blame. He saw it first with his eyes. There was no moon to reflect off the iceberg and no waves to he could not have seen the sea splashing around it. He is blameless. It was just all round bad luck. The cards were stacked against the Titanic that night. Thanks for a great video. I am a Titanic lover and met 3 survivors when they were alive. Take a trip to the Titanic Museum in Belfast. We'll worth it.

@BeyondTheTitanic
@BeyondTheTitanic 3 ай бұрын
Well technically SS was correct. Titanic only used the prefix of RMS because it was licensed to carry the kings mail (Royal Mail Ship). If it had not it would have simply been referred to as SS (Steam ship). her lifeboats actually carried the prefix of SS upon their plaque’s that were affixed to their structure. Hope this helps 😁👍🏻

Well arend there no tourist boats at Southhampton, where you can make round trips through the harbour? I am shure they would show you the "Titanic"-quay from the waterside? Well, the story with the look-out-glasses... I am shure that if Captain Smith would have wanted the glasses from the cupboard, he would ordered to brake the lock and get the glasses anyway. He was the captain and also there where enough experts on board to brake such locks, even this primitive type of locks in 1912. I still wonder, why the captain did not do that. On the other hand, to use glasses at night in the open at -4°C all the time would be senseless. The radiated heat from the face would have produced moisture, so that someone would to have to clean the glasses all the time anyway and maybe missed the berg in this precious seconds. That is at least when I tried my glasses on a cold winter night, to prove my theory.

I actually feel so much for Fredrick Fleet bc he spotted the death of 1500+ people and having that on his conscience for the rest of his life. Just like for J. Bruce Ismay as well. Fleet had so many financial problems later in life of course but to be honest if I was in his shoes of his life I would have done everything i could to do clear my name

@@tanesha41 Second Officer Lightoller agreed that, if one used binoculars, they improve vision at night, making it possible that the iceberg could have been seen sooner. He also said that one does not use them continuously, so maybe they would not have made a difference. Contradictory opinions. Would they have been used constantly? Maybe, maybe not. Lightoller had a very high opinion of the lookouts.

Read his testimony to the US Senate, the man had zero clue about distances, height, or feet. Why he was employed as a lookout is nuts. Some folk aren't the sharpest tools in the shed and he probably never had access to an education so the blame is on White Star for hiring him. Frankly, Fleet was stupid.
