The signal BG mentioned is called a shot spotter. It was added as an update to the police cameras used in Chicago a few years after they were introduced. It's nothing new, to certain areas that experienced it, but can be shocking to those who haven't.

We have that in Tampa... Technology is the new police officer. Mics pick up the sound of gunfire like buoys in the ocean monitoring waves and other conditions. Mic 1 is in South BFE picks up gunfire, the cops move to South BFE. It's really basic when you think about it...

They have satellites in some areas that record. So as long as they know where and around when you did a crime they can't catch you. They pull up the footage and then just watch and track you up to current time and know exactly where your at. Plus like BG said, they have these mics on corners that can detect gun shots and it immediately send them the location, time and how many shots were fired.
