Kagaz ke phool 1959 :- कागज़ के फूल; Paper Flowers, is a 1959 classic Hindi film produced and directed by Guru Dutt, who also played the lead role in the film.
The film was a box office disaster of its time but was later resurrected as a world cinema cult classic in the 1980s. The film's music was composed by S. D. Burman and the notable lyrics were written by Kaifi Azmi, giving hits like Waqt ne Kiya Kya Haseen Situm, sung by Geeta Dutt.
In the 2002 Sight & Sound critics' and directors' poll, Kaagaz Ke Phool was ranked at #160 among the greatest films of all time.
Motivated by the success of Pyaasa, Guru Dutt embarked on the creation of yet another of his socially challenging movie, Kaagaz Ke Phool. The theme and tone on this movie were ages ahead of the Indian audience of the 50s who were used to simpler plots and storyline. The underlying tones of the film were complex and story was controversial for the time.
Considered one of Guru Dutt's finest film by many, Kaagaz Ke Phool was a commercial disaster when it was first released. At the film's premiere, Dr Rajendra Prasad, then President of India and invited chief guest, walked out of the cinema hall deeply offended.
Audiences in Delhi's Regal cinema threw stones at the screen during the screening. Reactions like these deeply affected the sensitive and introverted Dutt .Guru Dutt himself admitted in an interview to Filmfare in 1963,
" It was good in patches. It was too slow and it went over the head of audiences."
Many claim that the film is semi-autobiographical of Guru Dutt and that he portrayed his angst in the movie. At the time of production of the film, Guru Dutt's marriage to Geeta Dutt was under strain due to his liking for Waheeda Rehman. This was openly known causing Guru Dutt's personal life to resemble that of the protagonist in the movie. However, the forecast of his own (Guru Dutt's) death, to parallel the sad and imminent death of the protagonist in the film, is debatable.
Another explanation for the inspiration is Guru Dutt's association with Gyan Mukherjee, the famous 1940s director whose Qismet (1941) had made him into a household name. The life and subsequent failures of Mukherjee, whom Guru Dutt had joined in 1950, influenced him deeply. Many think that Kaghaz ke Phool was based on Gyan Mukherjee's life and failures, as Guru Dutt's previous film Pyaasa had been dedicated to him.

"Pyasa" was also a great movie, though a different story as compared to "Kagaz ke Phool". Songs by Sahir Ludhiyanvi truly described the face of our society...

He was always considered great...even during the days when he was making movies like baazi, jaal, Mr. 55..all of his movies were commercial success except Kagaj ke phool....which threw him off pretty badly..especially coz it was semi-autobiographical...also people cudn't exactly understand what he was trying to say that...it was unfortunate that he wasn't alive to see Kagaj ke phool turn into a cult classic....great filmmaker and a true introvert!!!

I believe the story was closer to Amiya Chakraborty life than Gurudutt. The Director / heroine relationship was not a first in this case, ample examples earlier or in parallel times were there.

Agree with u Kunal. Waheeda Rehmaan and Latadidi are the only persons alive today who had worked very closely with Gurudutt in1950s and can tell us facts about his movies which could have been forgotten. His movies should be researched by Film Institute students. His concept, stories, direction were all much ahead of his era of 1950s. In 1958 families, blood relations were intact, possibly that's why this movie and its concept could not get recognition. And today after 63years this movie and overall Gurudutt is researched a lot.

I am passing through this stage of life.I am an Architect now 72. could not do the work with that vigour but I remember all my big projects designed by me and the appreciation i was getting from all directions. the time this movie was made bollywood was hardly 30-40 years old........and then came classics like guide...pyassa n kagajz ke phool .....these people had vision of movie making....top class...i dont have words how much these movies means to me.....n guru dutt .....you sir .. made movies out of that time lines .........decades ahead .......even most the ppl in my era are unable to understand your work.....hats off!!!!!

A legend saying good bye to this world, probably this was his last movie. There can not be more befitting lyrics than what Azmi wrote, saying 'every one left, one by one, I have seen the friendship of time'. Movie flopped because the audience could not see Mr. Dutt's point, he was not for everone any way. He lived & died on his own terms.

When i was very young about 14yr i watched payasa n kagaz ke fool both were bored me...but when i grow mature n again watched these movies after becoming 20+yr , i got amazed , these are not only movies but founder stones of art in cinema , a big salute to gurudatt saheb, now im in my 40' n always love to see these movies atleast once in month or whenever get time

Guru Dutt was not an ordinary person. Besides being an extremely sensitive human being, he was a philosopher and a visionary. He knew that wealth and fame are temporary. But more importantly, he knew that even the relationships are temporary, and are largely tied to your status. He could see losing his near and dear ones as his life moved toward its sunset. This is what disturbed him the most. His feelings found expression in Kaifi Azmi’s brilliant poetry, SD Burman’s superb music and Mohd. Rafi’s golden voice, and produced this timeless classic.

I am a big fan of Guru datt saheb, and a big fan of this movie and more particularly, this song! His Pyaasa was an eye opener for me and during the course of my life, I realized what has been portrayed by him in Kagaz ke phool was an unbelievable fact of life. But, my dear friends, I advise that this much dose of reality or pragmatism may push to hatred towards the life and we will start doubting every relationship which is again, not correct!! What a great song!!!

Ram Chandra Sadhwani : कैफ़ी आज़मी साहब ने गीत कम लिखे लेकिन जो भी लिखे हर युग के गीत हो गए चाहे कागज़ के फूल हो, हकीकत हो सभी गाने एक से एक खूबसूरत और सुनने वालों के दिल को छु जाते हैं. और रफ़ी साहब का क्या कहना. शायद देखा जाए तो उनके बराबर न कोई गीतकार था शायद होगा भी नहीं. गीत व गायकी ने इतना सुन्दर फील्ड दिया की गुरुदत्त ने भी अपने शानदार अभिनय से हर छेत्र में गीत अच्छा लगता है.

The first movie of guru datt ji I watched was Pyasa and I started recommending this movie to whomever I discuss about movies . The second movie was Kagaz ke phool.. this made me a hardcore fan of this legend.. and this song is the best song about reality of life...it is possible because of lyrics , acting and voice...thanks to Kaifi Azmi ji, Guru datt ji and genre master Rafi ji.

The other day on FM Gold, some knowledgeable person (I dont know his name) on songs from 'Mere Mahboob' said "Rafi Sahab ek purani sharaab ki tarah hain, jitni purani hoti jaati hai, aur achhi hoti jaati hai'. Rafi Sahab ki popularity waqt ke saath aur bhi badhti ja rahi hai :)
