Gregory Peck, Chuck Conners, and Carrol Baker in a scene from the movie The Big Country. Nice horsemanship.

No Stunt Double: Gregory Peck and Charlton Heston did their fight scene themselves and per William Wyler's instructions, they were really hitting each other. Real-Life Relative: Gregory Peck's sons are in the film. Scully Box: Gregory Peck wore lifts in the film so he would look taller than Charlton Heston and more in line with Chuck Connors. Which is pretty funny considering that Peck was already a pretty tall guy himself (he's widely considered one of the classic examples of tall, dark and handsome). Stunt Double: Slim Pickens' daughter later revealed that he doubled for Gregory Peck in the scene where James McKay gets bucked off the horse. Pickens owned the horse and didn't want anyone else riding it. Writing by the Seat of Your Pants: Jean Simmons was so traumatized by her experience making the film that she refused to talk about it for years until an interview in the late '80s, when she revealed: We'd have our lines learned, then receive a rewrite, stay up all night learning the new version, then receive yet another rewrite the following morning. It made the acting damned near impossible.

The stunt riding is amazing. I think one of the reasons there are so few westerns made anymore is that you can't find actors and stunt men who can ride anything like the actors you see in this scene. Connors was great in this movie. It's his best role by far.

I have to say it: 'They don't make 'em like this anymore'. Does anybody under 40 watch BIG COUNTRY, MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, THE PROFESSIONALS, HOW THE WEST WAS WON, TGTBTU or ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST?

Anyone know who the trick rider is? I just watched this movie twice. Great flick. I thought of Yakima Canutt. But Wiki mentions Chuck Hayward. It's probably the same cowboy on 'old thunder'. Oops. Just read down a little further. Slim Pickens!! Who would have thunk it.
