Hi I’ve been watching your video about my beloved country and I’m so sorry that you had to go through that horrible experience. I’m gonna tell you truthfully what happened: your Tour lady was actually the whole cause of the experience. First off: she should have known NOT to call them bushnegroes because that’s not who they are! They are maroons. Second of all, they do not just sell the stuff she mentioned. They sell sooooo much more. If she had made the effort to properly prepare them, introduce you guys and explain first what the video was about, you would have been indulged in one of the most valuable traditional knowledge of medicinal plants, the best cleansers and the most beautiful craft from both the Maroon and the Amerindian! They are really a proud community and have been abused for centuries! Hence them being apprehensive! But, if your Tour lady is a true Surinamese she should have known and should have done what your friend did! Approach them first, properly ask for permission to film, explain what it’s about, introduce you guys and you would have seen that it is not even money they want! All they need is acknowledgment because they’ve experienced a lot of mistreatment and stigmatising just as your Tour lady did by telling you in a very inappropriate way about who they are. On behalf of them I apologies and I’ll look out for the rest of your videos hoping you’ll have another change to experience them. But just know, next time when you visit Suriname always look for the tourguides who truly know how to share the beauty of our country and introduce EACH ONE OF OUR ethnic groups with respect and dignity. Thanks for showing such love to my country. Love from a Surinamese living in England who represents Suriname at the UNESCO! So I know why ive written this feedback.

This video went all kinds of directions! That introduction to the first market was quite something.... Bob coming on the screen with that facial expression.. haha. In the end it seems that stopping at lack of understanding doesn't get you anywhere, but if you take a little time to open communication, or keep it open rather than shutting it down you can really make progress... but you can still end up with some bad burgers that are just... not good... and chicken legs.. are legs of chickens.... Definitely enjoyed the video! Looking forward to what is to come!

The first part had me dying what that lady was telling all what the store had for women and men 😅. Always enjoy watching you go to different places trying the food and talking about culture. Amazing and sometimes somewhat scary.

Well done Amy. What a beautiful conclusion to what could have been left a potentially confrontational and negative experience. It is an understandable perception on the lady's part, she's probably had bad experiences with other tourists and you were perhaps the ones that showed her, there was a genuine, sincere human side that also wants just as much to love.

Sadly, tourism in Suriname has been neglected by all governments so far. There is actually a lot to see and do for those who want to witness tropical nature in untouched form. A beautiful country torn apart by corruption.

I'm so sorry you had to experience that. Most of these people aren't used to cameras and stuff. Its the newer generations who are used to it. So the old people can be kind of hostile. Even towards other surinamese people who film stuff.

Are you guys still in Suriname? I enjoy your video’s and it’s great that you guys want to share all these experiences from our country. Here is a tip when going to places like the first market always ask for permission to film and what your intentions are. Not every one is open for it especially when it’s cultural based. But I loved that she went back and explained and that shows how much your hearts are in a good place and you got a friend for life ❤ As for Wolly’s not a good choice. Try one of the food stands at Wilhelminastraat there are a few with good burgers. They are mostly open in the evening. Sizzler Midnight Grill, Sin City burger, Foodhub Suriname…have you guys experienced the inland (binnenland) places outside Paramaribo like Isadou?

Hello, hope your well. I was in Suriname 2 Years ago and fell absolutely on love with it, and it has become my second home, and i have made friends for life As you probably have figured out, Suriname is not on the tourist map. The locals are extremely camera shy, and unfortunately the first market you went to is run by people who hold beliefs very similar to the Amish. The think pictures will steal there soul. So before I take any pictures, I asked for permission, and I stated my only intention was to show the world how beautiful Surinamese culture is. And to bring them business. Everyone understands the dollar bill. So just ask first. Always a good idea. Other than that, you did nothing wrong. Could have happened to anyone. Also if that doesn't work, buy something first. When I tried taking photos, they didn't even want me to photograph the produce. That was until I ate a madame jeanette pepper right in front of them. By allowing them to make fun of me, and put myself in a position of extreme pain by chili pepper ingestion, I gained thier trust. And they let their guard down immediately and said go ahead after once again explaining I'm here to bring business but I can only do that, if people see what you have to offer.

I hope that you guys will come back,because suriname has a lot to offer especially the food and culture is pretty nice. I hope u get a better guide next time cse your friend wasn't the best at it 😅. I hope you visit again soon ❤

You guys went to the wrong fast food Wolly's is not the best fast food in suriname. There're plenty fast food restaurants go and try 😋 Lorry's , micky's , Bistro and so you have plenty more.

Hey, I just have to tell you guys, I don't think these people have "cultural insecurity". I have to say that because it just really bothers me and you seem like nice people who would listen to my perspective. I live in CDMX, Mexico, and there are many markets like these. It is not respectful to go in these markets and videotape the people who are selling and buying things. It's just common courtesy. I'm sure you guys are nice people, and so are they. I would suggest getting to know people and asking before you start videotaping them. People do not want to be patronized or infantalized by gringos. Typically gringos treat these countries as a playground. But these are people living their everyday lives and they would appreciate if you would try to assimilate or act as they act. I'm not here to insult or put you guys down, but I see a lot disrespectful treatment from gringos here in Mexico. Perhaps you would think that being genuinely interested and meaning well is not being disrespectful. But please understand that this is everyday life for these people, many of whom are drastically less well off than you. And I just want to say, I'm 100% a gringo, I don't use that word in a negative sense, and Latin people use it commonly to describe Americans. Unfortunately it can have a negative coronation, simply because of the type of "all about me" attitude many gringos have. Wolly's used to be so good but the last time i went i just threw my burger away and never went there again, now i buy my burgers elsewhere. Sorry about the negative situation you guys had not all people here like cameras. I rarely film around here even for me as a local they don't like me filming in certain places. Those yellow peppers are Madame Jeanette peppers. They are tremendously hot and fruity. My friend from Suriname brought me seeds years ago. I still grow them.

Your tour guide should know why they don't want you to film. everybody else in Suriname you will not have a problem filming. The market where you went is for maroon people. In their culture they believe if somebody films them you bring bad luck up on them that's the reason they don't want you to film

Nah Wolly's ain't got the best burgers in Suriname. Should've gone to Micki's Palace, Leckies or Denello's (Lelydorp). Plus when in Suriname focus more on the local food than western food. American burgers won't beat Surinamese burgers.

I really like you guys but that whole market thing was blown out of proportion, they were just making sure you guys weren't exploiting them and being disrespectful, they didn't need you guys to go back and patronize them by being overly complimentary.. I mean, I get that Amy felt better but I think she might have missed the point a little by saying all they needed was a little money. Most people with cameras like to show all the miss fortune and "third world" like life style and that gets pretty old. If you all would have gone in SANS camera and spoke to them first and asked if you could show their wares and produce they would have probably said yes.
