I'm 56 years old. After working in the medical field for over 20 years, the doc's I worked for had decided to retire, so I went back to school. I chose to go to cosmetology school at the age of 50...50...years...old... Yes, I was the oldest student enrolled and wasn't initially welcomed by the other students ages 17-23 years old. Trust and believe, English isn't taught the way I learned it and their vocabularies were worlds apart from mine. In class one day, one of the girls said my name, then added some words behind it. I just looked at her, then I turned back around to work on my stuff. All of the sudden she exclaimed, "RUDE! Why didn't you answer my question?" I turned back around, looked her right in the eyes and replied, "I do understand what you said was in the form of a question but given how you phrased that question, I don't have the slightest idea about what your question was. Do they no longer teach kids how to diagram a sentence in 7th grade English?" The youngsters in the room looked at me as if I had just grown a second head spontaneously. In stereo, they all said, "No! We don't even know what 'sentence diagramming is." I didn't even know how to respond to that. The girl that asked me what she considered a properly phrased question smiled and said, "I'm going to go buy a dictionary just so I can talk to you." She did just that. 🤣 By the time I graduated from school, I felt like their second Mom. I adore each and every one of them. ❤ ~ APRIL LIPKE

Tomfoolery is actually based on a real person. Travelers would come to a fork in the road and ask Tom Fool which direction to go. He would tell them to go to the left because it was shorter. He killed a lot of people that way because the left took them into a deadly bog. He was hung for his crimes. That is the short version.... look it up.

@@carolblakeman2312 Spell check didn't have an option for "caniption" because it doesn't read phonetically and the letter "a" probably prevented it from recognizing common typographical errors of words beginning in "Con-". You were close, but the correct spelling is "conniption." If you had typed "coniption" instead, it would have offered the correct spelling as the first option. Interestingly enough, Google search seems to recognize even the more egregious misspellings as an association/conflation if you search the word in its proper spelling. I find it intriguing that it includes "Kanipchen" in the common questions under a search for "Conniption" but mucks up my attempt to search for some specific things using boolean logic to the point that the results are completely useless. The natural language search makes things so much harder for me to narrow down results to particular known specifics using exclusions now, but seems to be making it easier for people to find stuff that is really unfamiliar to them. I wonder how it manages to do that phonetic interpretation and match those two very different spellings as the same contextual word...
@UpRoaryus
@UpRoaryus 2 жыл бұрын
@@carlaaustin6054 you can usually tell who has learned some vocabulary through having heard words that they haven't seen in print from those who have learned them through having read them in books by the fact that the former will often misspell uncommon words, while the latter tends to mispronounce them. This distinction is most notable when words have been borrowed from another language like French - I can't tell you how many different ways the word "Voilà!" has been butchered in social media posts as "walla!"or "wah-lah!"/"whallah!"/"WA-LA!" etc... or, before I had taken French as a language, how long it took me to figure out that I actually did know the meaning of the word "hors d'oeuvres" when I saw it in print as a kid. I had a trick I devised to reading unfamiliar French words that usually worked by covering up some of the extra vowels or initial and ending consonants that were often silent and then pronouncing what was left. I was delighted to find I recognized it when I was left with "OR-DERVE" instead of what I had initially read as "WHORES DE OVARIES" 😆 I knew THAT wasn't right... .
