6 month review/ Bike Check for my 2021 High-C, with wheels, tires, brakes, grips, seat, seat post, sprocket, freewheel, chain, and pedal upgrades .... Figured now was a good time to put this together because next week I’ll be changing the bike up a little.
If folks get a kick out of this, drop me a comment and let me know if I should do something similar for my gear.
I’m 45, learned how to wheelie last year, and I’m loving the bike life. Stay positive everyone, thanks!!!

Great review & add-ons! 👍 My wife, son, and I have 3 High C 29's in our garage. 2 army green & and 1 sunrise fade. I'm working on my wheelies but struggle at times, so I too was contemplating changing the gearing but I also want to maintain daily rideability if that makes sense.
@dadmodewheeliegang
@dadmodewheeliegang 3 жыл бұрын
The whole family rides! That’s awesome! As for gearing, I think the best and cheapest option is just to go to a 25T front. They really don’t make them smaller than that, and that’s a very good ratio to help pop the front up (25 front 13 back).

I just noticed my seat is starting to look a little tweaked. I was considering converting to pivotal but I think you get a more comfortable ride on a railed seat . Nice review!
@dadmodewheeliegang
@dadmodewheeliegang 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Steve ... truth to be told, even with the brace, I think my Flyer seat is getting slightly twisted, also, but for me, the real value of the railed seat is in its width at the rear, and also the ability to slide it backwards and forwards to fit different body type. Same with the seat post, I like that you can get offset ones. Do the rails actually work like a spring and provide some comfort? I don’t know. Pivotal seats I don’t have much experience with, either, and tripod seats are just too small and decorative (to me). I’m having enough fun on this bike that if I needed to swap seats at the same frequency as tires (1-2K miles), it wouldn’t be that big of a deal. I just saw someone I know post an S-works seat ...$450!!! $50 for the SE Bikes one seems a little high, too. I’d like them to be $30-35, and I’d like one with a different color, but overall, it works and there are thousands of better riders out there kicking ass and doing the seat dancing thing, so we know the quality is there.

@dadmodewheeliegang
@dadmodewheeliegang 3 жыл бұрын
I used the stock gearing for a few weeks and it was perfectly fine. It’s 27/13 if I recall. It’s easier to go to a 25T in the front if you want more torque to help pop up the wheelies, but your top speed will be lower. Changing the freewheel to something larger is also good, but can be more expensive because you would also need to lengthen the chain (or buy a new chain). I’m sorry, but I don’t remember the part number of the tool I used to remove the original Freewheel. For the installation of the new free wheel, you don’t need the tool to tighten it down. If you threaded on there by hand you can simply use the chain and the Kranks to pull the free wheel tied to the wheel. You have incredible force when you drop all your weight down on 1 foot pedaling forward, and even if you use the tool to tighten the Freewheel on chances are you’ll still tight knit more just buy riding with it the first time.

@dadmodewheeliegang
@dadmodewheeliegang 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jamali, no issues with the 3/8” axle so far, just need to check your axle nuts regularly. I did have one come loose on a ride a few months ago. More importantly, keep the hub bearings tight, because those seem to take the most impact, and it’s why I’m staying on the S&M hubs from their Covid Cruiser wheelset for now (plus the axle was longer iirc). Their bearings seem to be higher quality than some of the SE wheels I’ve tried. On my stock big ripper rear wheel, I now have a small clunk so that wheel is sidelined until I get a replacement set of bearings for it. As for bending a 3/8” axle, you’d need to be doing some serious grinding or hits to one of the pegs imo. I’m at 190#, and so far so good with just parking lot maneuvers. I did have my longest 2 footed peg wheelie yesterday, maybe 45 seconds long down the hill I practice at.

@dadmodewheeliegang

I've ridden several hundred miles with this setup, and the rims are just fine with barely any wear through the anodized black color. There are several companies that make wheelie bikes with disc brakes. Off the top of my head from SE Bikes: Monster Ripper, Monster Quad, Fat Quad, Fast Ripper, PK Ripper, Maniacc Flyer. Collective makes a MTB that people use as a wheelie bike with disc brakes as well. GT Bikes has a Street Performer with Disc. Throne Goon XL is also with disc. For half of 2021 I have ridden a Fast Ripper or Monster Quad, so I'm familiar with the benefits of disc myself. I don't know a steel wheelie bike with disc, but I may have missed it. I haven’t spent any time with the Snakeskins on my bikes, but I recently checked out a pair last weekend and they seem like a great tire. I like that they’re 2.5” wide and they felt good to my fingers. The Speedballs are fast rolling, great tires, but they skid and slide almost immediately when you’re hard on the brakes and that tells me they’re very sensitive to tire pressure in order to help maintain grip. I’ve had them slide out on me several times when I was practicing swerves (and my swerves are weak … so it’s not like I was going crazy). My worst crash came from sliding out during a swerve with the Speedballs and I have a large scar on the top of my shoulder as a result. Ever since I moved my Rippers over to Maxxis Hookworms, I’ve been happy. They’re compliant, and very grippy (probably the best overall tire I’ve ever ridden).
