BIKE CHECK: Charbon 29er (Chinese Carbon Frame)

I had this Chinese frame for one and a half years and it served me well. I can not speak for everyone as the quality control is very random and having the seller overseas means that warranty is sketchy at best. If you are new to cycling, go to a bike shop and get a bike you can afford. The rider makes the bike! if you are experienced and willing to take the gamble, it can turn out good like it did for me.

NOTE: ALL carbon frames are MADE in asia (mostly china). so this whole "chinese quality frame issue" is stupid. TREK,Specialized etc etc are ALL CHINESE CARBON. "unbranded frame" is the correct term.

Totally disagree. As someone who has bought these 'chinese' frames and the 'made in asia' (focus, Cannondale, giant, specialized) frames there is indeed a difference in quality.
@deVence

The manufacturing is in china because it is cheaper in terms of manufacturing cost. But these mainland china companies don't have the same engineers, regulations and knowledge that these big brand bikes have. It's a tradeoff.

@@aaron___6014 like anything, it depends on which factory it came from. I know for a fact the asian frame makers for trek and spec....make 'overruns' and tgen sell them unbranded for 75% less.

Hmmm 142mm thru-axle. The $329 frame I bought was 135mm QR, so this frame may be my next one in a few years...or more. Current frame (Savadeck 27.5 hardtail) is basically flawless, only issue is that the left dropout shrunk a bit, bike shop filed down the hanger and it's OK now. My advice would be if you are taking big jumps/drops, you may want to pass on an off-brand frame, but that applies to any component from anywhere in the world. BTW the listed weight for my frame was 2.6 lbs and the actual was 2.9 lbs, but hey for $329...

You mention this Charbon frame was a replacement for one that failed. What brand was the other one? Was that maybe the reason for you being afraid the Charbon bike would fail? I just think many Chinese frames get a lot of dirt and I’ve seen other more mainstream brands braking apart and they don’t get the bad rep Chinese frames do.

@CsupOfficial
@CsupOfficial 7 жыл бұрын
+Minoltalphafan I broke a carbon frame in a crash before the season started, not a fault of the brand, carbon just doesn't stand against impact. I felt I could thrash that bike because there was r&d that went into the frame. If I went even a little sideways on technical trails on the charbon, it would just plain sketch me out. I would relegate the charbons to race day only bikes. Thanks!

Admittedly, I will never use it for the rough stuff…well…because it’s carbon…and…carbon breaks…easily. My main ride is a Specialized Tarmac SL4. The only difference between the two? $3000! (FYI…BXT makes ALL the mass-produced bikes for ALL the major brands except Giant.)

Hey bro the party is still goin. You will like the charbon if you are a lighter rider. Hands down get the BSA frame. I would avoid PF like the plague, literally the worst idea in bike industry history. With the BSA threaded you can run a bunch of different cranks and install everything yourself.

@ThePsychonaut
@ThePsychonaut 5 жыл бұрын
Prob 120 max, anything higher then that and you'll have a steeper headtube angle which will be no good if your gonna ride off road, you also loose balance as your bb will rise if you go with more travel then what the frame was designed for and that would be 100mm most likely.

I currently have a Trek 820, which if you're familiar with Treks you'll know is not a great bike, but I'm looking to upgrade at some point to a little bit of a better hardtail. Do you know how this compares to a Santa Cruz highball, let's say? I'm not an overly aggressive or adventurous (I don't do downhill or anything), so would this frame be an okay for my purpose?
@CsupOfficial
@CsupOfficial 6 жыл бұрын
+Nebula Kraken The Highball is a much nicer frame. However, obviously going to be around 3x the price. If you are going to be doing light cross country riding, it is a great option.
@nebulakraken9399
@nebulakraken9399 6 жыл бұрын
+C sup Ok, I believe I've found two relatively good carbon hardtails ( Santa Cruz highball and the canyon sf cl 6.0) Do you what makes the highball 100$ more than the canyon? It appears to me that the canyon has better specs, but that is with my limited knowledge.
@CsupOfficial
@CsupOfficial 6 жыл бұрын
Canyon is a direct to consumer bike company, while Santa Cruz sells out of bike shops. The difference is that Canyon does not need to sell to a middle man (bike shop) and can sell direct to the consumer. This means they have better margins and can get a better component spec for the same profit. This gives the Canyon the edge in parts, however, it also means there is little in terms of customer support (most bike shops will give you a look if you walk in with a direct to consumer bike). So if you know what you are doing, online bike companies are great. If you are new to the sport, go through a bike shop and get a proper test ride, fit, and support from guys who have been doing it longer. Hope this helps man! Either way, you will be getting a great ride!

+Nick Stroud I sold it because I got sponsored by Specialized and now ride a fully customized Epic. Tbh, ya I would go back to the Charbon. For the money, it is a fantastic bike. What I don't like is feeling I can't shred at 100% due to the drop outs being so underdeveloped. If they fix that...well...expect a new bike on the channel.

I've been riding bmx for pretty much my whole life and have been mountain biking for around 3 years. I ride for the Detroit country day mountain biking team and have came third in 4 races. I have an aluminum trek super fly with eagle crank arms 1x10 as I've been getting really into the sport I would like to build my own bike and I want it to be a lightweight agressive single speed would you reccomend one of these frames? I know what I'm doing as much as assembly and the mechanics, I'm just trying to find the right frame
@CsupOfficial
@CsupOfficial 7 жыл бұрын
+Paul Kanarios Paul, i'm not sure a "charbon" frame would be a best suite for your style of riding. Something with slidable dropouts or an eccentric bottom bracket would be better. Single speeds should be nuke proof, especially if you have a background in bmx. I would check Ebay for a good deal on used single speed frames that are purposely built for running "that one golden gear." I would put the charbon frames in the weight-weenie-race-day-only-shaved-legs-required bracket. I hope that helps. Please feel free to ask any other questions!

@CsupOfficial
@CsupOfficial 6 жыл бұрын
True. But not all carbon is created equal. Chinese carbon is almost all resin in a lot of cases instead of the actual fibers of "carbon" (plastic fibers). So really the difference is not that significant. I ride a 20lb alloy road bike with nice components and it is the best riding bike I have ever had. Carbon may look better (in some cases) but unless you are banging out 6.2 w/kg for 35 mins in the Tour or in a UCI World Cup Race where every single gram counts, it won't make any difference.

I would rather get a Trek xcaliber frame set. As I imagine this carbon frame must be too flexible for a comfortable ride.

@@Mazeboxx It can happen. But at least Trek will cover you with a proper warranty, including a crash replacement policy. Chinese pseudo-companies won't.
@Mazeboxx
@Mazeboxx 4 жыл бұрын
Leo_inter_Hyaenaem That will only apply if you are either the original owner of the frame or a second hand frame no older than 3 years. After that - that’s it. Besides, what good is a warranty and a ‚cash back‘ policy if my face hits the road going 85 km/h??? Please! You know how long I battled with Trek go get ANYone just taking to me. I’ve had similar cases with MTBs, had broken frames and you know what they use to cover themselves from warranties? Negligence...

Carbon isnt known for flexing.....its known for being stiff.
@letour32rr
@letour32rr 6 жыл бұрын
Proraptor it all depends on the design and layup. Just look at the Trek Domane for example. It has a pivot at the seat tube/top tube joint that allows for the seat tube to flex and absorb shock. The older Cannondale Scalpel mountain bike didn’t have a rear suspension pivot because it relied on the flex in the carbon chainstays to handle that task.

Proraptor as an employee or consumer? If you really don’t know, I’ll throw some model names at you of those that are designed to flex in one direction (vertically) to offer a smoother ride to a rider. I’ll keep it short so you can look them up, but could list all night: - Specialized Roubaix - Specialized Diverge - Trek Domane - Trek ProCaliber - Any Softride model - Cannondale Scalpel (mid 2000’s) - just about any modern Endurance Road/Gravel bike is designed to have some degree of vertical compliance while retaining torsional stiffness for pedaling efficiency, with Carbon models allowing more flex. If you truly work in the bicycle industry, you should know this.
