Before the reform of the spanish grammar of 1815 the letter X in old spanish had the sound of H as in Henry, that´s why nowadays we keep pronouncing México=Méjico, Xavier=Javier, Texas=Tejas, Quixote=Quijote, Xerez=Jerez, Ximenez=Jiménez, Oaxaca=Oajaca, among others. In medieval spanish the letter X had the sound equivalent to sh [ʃ] as in shine. For example México was pronunced Meshico. Time after this sound evolved to J and later to KS.

5:16 - shoo-cah sounds almost like the word "pike " in Russian. The Argentinian pronunciation is really beautiful and unique, but for me it's easier to pronounce "ll" and "y" like "ya" or "yo"

Its interesting that in different regions, double l is pronounced differently. Here in the philippines, we used to speak espanol during colonial times but no longer, we pronounce double l today as ly. Ex. Villa = vil-ya instead of vi-ya, calle = cal-ye , pollo= pol-yo.

I originally declared Spanish as my major when I started college, then something completely unexpected happened. Though I had struggled with mathematics my entire life, when I started college level math, my math light bulb came on. I did so well in my first semester math class, I decided to go for an even higher level for my second semester, during which I also took my first semester of Spanish. I aced them both, but I struggled a bit with Spanish and was having so much fun finding my passion for mathematics, I opted to switch my major. I only took the one semester of Spanish. During the course, our professor, who was born in Mexico, taught us to pronounce Spanish using what he called Latin American Spanish. I have since come to find out the way he told us to pronounce some letters in words were not the way they were actually spoken in most of the Latin Americas. For example, he instructed us to pronounce yo and the ll, as in pollos, like the English y, so "yoh" for yo, and "poh-yohs" for pollos. Then one day we had an interpreter in my courtroom who's first name was Jolanda. She pronounced those words using a weak English j sound, so "joh" for yo and "poh-johs" for pollos. She told me there were only a couple of Latin American countries where the words were pronounced using a different sound than in the rest of the Spanish speaking American countries. I'm still confused to this day on what the most proper use is for those words in order to be understood by most Latin American Spanish speakers I meet. I mean, I already have an issue as I cannot roll my R's, but I want to be able to be readily understood by the majority of Spanish speaking people in the United States.

I always pronounce LL as Ya... for instance Calle is Caye. But for some reason I always say Lleno and Llaves as I always use Ja... Jeno or Javes. I don't know why. But sometimes using LL as Y in Spain they don't understand me, like my Yaaaa is too soft.

In the Philippines, LL is pronounced as “ly”. For example: “castillo” becomes “castiLYo” and “calle” becomes “caLYe”. I have no freaking idea why. We also use the Spanish words “castillo” and “calle” and spell it as “kastilyo” and “kalye” respectively, both with the same meaning as the Spanish words.

Hi! Thanks for the video. I think it is best to stick to one type of pronunciation. I speak with the Spanish accent because that’s how I was taught many years ago. People often say that I should switch to the Latin American way but it doesn’t feel right to do that.

Can you do more examples with names.. because I notice people with names like Yanissa also spell it Janissa and sometimes they want it pronounced "Yah" and other times "Jah" regardless of if they spell it with the Y or J. Same goes for names like Yeferson/Jefferson or Jefry/Yefry or etc etc... It gets a bit confusing. does it depend on the country or the individual person?

Many people say "sh" for ll in Colombia also. When I was in Bogota 2 years ago, I said the city "Me-de-yin" to my friend and she at first didn't know what I was talking about. Then she thought for a second and said "Me-de-shin". Then I went to Medellin and all the locals said the same..."Me-de-shin".

But LL also can be ly (like italian gl)

LL and Y: I've noticed when english speakers try to pronouce it, they make it sound closer to an "i" like ia, ie, io, iu, ia. As a native I never paid attention to this detail or even noticed it until I spoke with tourists, but this sounds incorrect. The LL and Y is like your Y and J, is strong and defined like in "Jack". Try making it closer to a consonant than a Vowel. as you said, sounds "Sh" only in some parts of argentina and some other surounding countries.

You're wrong about the letter Ll it has another pronounciation which is Ly, it's still being use in some countries and in Creole-Spanish. The Original pronounciation of Ll is Ly like Cuchil-yo, Maravel-yo-so. 'till the trend from 80s change that started as Slang which is the Y sound.

What about the pronunciation of ll without yeísmo?

Me gustan todos tus videos, pero yo comentaría que hay cinco maneras para pronunciar las letras “y” o “ll”: como “y”, “j”, o “sh” en inglés, como explicaste; pero también existen las pronunciaciones “ly” en España (aunque la esa está desapareciendo más y más); y como la letra “j” en francés o “zh” en la ortografía inglesa, que se oye en unas regiones de Sudamérica. La última se intercambia de vez en cuando con la “sh”. Aún así, buen video!

J: always sounds like "H" unless is in an english name. Just to keep the original name and all we will respect the original pronunciation and writing.

Half the things I'm seeing and using are saying it's one way, the other half are saying it's another, I'm just trying to stick with Mexican Spanish but that's not how the apps I'm using are set up.... I'm going to try to remember the Mexican way but will probably eventually be beaten down and give up and do it how the apps say.... Ugh.
