Cool idea! Seems to embrace the notions that things like fear of failure or perfectionism can impede progress. You can’t be hard on yourself for getting words wrong when you get them this way.

Absolutely. I didn't want to go too far into the songwriting side of this, because I wanted it to be performance-focussed, but fear of failure/fear of producing something lame is a big impediment to creativity. I think it's one of the reasons people often struggle with creativity when they get older: I find it much harder to write songs (or anything) now compared to when I was, say, 15, because back then I didn't really have much clue about what was "good", nor any kind of track record I had to live up to. Result: I just wrote stuff, and some of it was no good but some of it was good. One of the keys success with any sort of creative endeavour is simply to DO, and do a lot. This is the kind of exercise, I hope, that can give people a way into that.

I absolutely love this. More enjoyable than the 'dry' tutorials, as great as they maybe. This just puts a whole different perspective on learning piano & songwriting. I'm trying to write songs ATM and using my own lyrics gets me making all sorts of judgements and editing etc etc, but this method takes all of that out of the equation. Using pentatonic scales is great because as you say, they sound good in most scenarios so that makes the whole process easier as well. Thanks Bill, definitely giving this a go later!! 😀👍

LOL I've just started singing recently. That's huge since I was the kid the choir teachers told to move my lips and not make a noise. And it's starting to make a difference. And I'm slowly starting your books.

Hey bill, I feel like I learn much better from books than videos. My main goal is to get better at improvising, much like keith godchaux from the grateful dead. which of your books do you think is best suited for me? do you think I will get much out of "how to really play piano" if playing in a band as a pianist is my main goal?

Dear Bill. I have books that tell me how to use the electronic keyboard, but I can't figure it out. Have you a tutorial on using the accompaniment without drums?

Hi Michelle: I'm sorry to say that's not the kind of tutorial I produce - it's a bit of a tricky one, because accompaniment settings will vary depending on your make and model of keyboard. Have you tried searching KZfaq or Google to see if there are any tutorials for your specific keyboard?

It should work with both smooth and crunchy, but the presence of palm oil will generally have a negative effect (slightly less so if it's sustainably sourced).
