Great video but Give some credit to Gen X 😭 Genderbending aka the androgynous look became popular in the 80s with singers like Prince, David Bowie, Boy George, Annie Lennox etc. Which is actually connected to why rock music was called satanic by the media in back in the day 🙄 It was literally Christian people in the government trying to continue to push the gender roles and control the masses with religion. Religion is often used to control people, our actions and how we think. It is binary- good and evil, heaven or hell. Free your mind and think for yourself 🥰✌ Question Everything.

I think what people forget is that Billie was 14 years old when she blew up. She was a damn child. And she hit 18/19 and was like “Cool now I’m an adult so I’m going to dress in a way that emphasizes my womanhood” and people want to say all sorts of stuff about this transition. She was SO SMART in the way she dressed and avoided being sexualized as a child.

@0Oja she wore those baggy clothes while she was still underage, because she wanted to avoid being sexualized AS A CHILD. its fucked up that she even has to worry about that. she didnt change that style until she became a legal adult at the age of 18 (which in itself is such an arbitrary number and speaks nothing for maturity, but creeps just wanna know when its socially acceptable to start sexualizing girls)

@Ooru Oh no! a child hid her body because she doesnt wanna be sexualized whatsoever, and then only starts being okay with it when she is a grown consenting adult! How terrible that she didnt sexualize herself at a young age and wait to dress like a normal woman when she actually became a woman!!!

@Ooru Because doing a bikini shower video means she wants you to sexualise her now and make snarky comments about it... or maybe she just wants to do a dumb bikini shower video. I'm gonna need to reference this video every single time someone sees a "masculine, tomboy" woman, and insists she's secretely a lesbian, a transman or nonbinary (which is, a lot). The way you choose to express yourself and your gender has nothing inherent to do with your sexuality or gender identity. By fixating on those things, we're actually perpetuating gender stereotypes whether we realize it or not.

Another example is Avril Lavigne - which is a really big inspiration for billie too. I used to be "one of the boys" when I was younger. I hated all that was feminine and made an effort to show that "I'm not like them". I was treated with respect, I was treated like an equal. But then, I started to become more comfortable in my body and I started to wear t-shirts and skinny-jeans instead of hoodies and sweatpants, and everything changed. I was no longer included in the group of guys, they started whispering stuff to eachother around me, they stopped inviting me to stuff. I was now treated as an accessory, as opposed to a member. They started flirting with me, groping me, treating me as a subhuman. I was no longer looked at with respect, but rather, disgust. All because I stopped hiding my body.

Another reason why society demonizes hyperfeminine women: femininity is very classist. To be feminine it costs money and special education. The most popular girls in my school maybe weren't hyperfeminine like Sharpay, they always wore the trendiest and expensive clothes. They were what girls were "expected" to look like. And those girls were horrible to any girls who couldn't reach their level with fashion, with pop culture knowledge, hairstyles, hairdyes, nails, shoes etc. So a lot of this hyperfemininity used to be associated with spoiled rich princesses

i was waiting for someone to point this out. Also traditional roles of femininity actually inhibit emotional expression despite women being seen as more “emotional”. An example of this is “being his peace” when it comes to relationships or being a personal therapist to other people as if you dont have your own problems. Another is acting “innocent,”/“chaste,” a concept which isn’t preservable when you live in poverty and are exposed to many potentially traumatic things.

i don’t think billie is really queerbaiting by saying “i love girls”? i couldn’t care less about her sexuality, and for the most part, we’ve already established that sexuality is fluid. she isn’t really feeding into any negative bisexual stereotypes, unlike to the extent that a more obviously queerbaiting bi song like “i kissed a girl” or something else does. so it seems like a harmless caption to me (i haven’t seen the music video though but my point still stands), especially as girls are known to be more touchy/huggy even platonically than guys usually do. however her problematic boyfriend is an issue as she considers herself an ally, but their relationship is weird on his part too, being the large age gap, it’s concerning at best.. and her random aave usage and mocking asian accents was uncalled for. hopefully they’ve both changed since then

i believe she was only 14 when she mocked asian accents, and 13 when she mouthed the slur (she was mouthing along to a song that used the slur and acc to her she didn't know what it meant at the time, which imo is understandable). as an asian, i do think it's disturbing, but not because it exposes billie for being a racist (she was 13-14, not even in high school). what's disturbing is how normalised asian mockery is in the west that even the current generation can unknowingly internalise it. i mean, the song she was singing to was "fish" by tyler the creator (a non-asian) and it was released as recently as 2011. i think people calling billie eilish (and others) out for that are making a systemic problem into an individual one.

When I was a tomboyish kid people made fun of me. Girls didn't want to be my friend because I was too "boyish", and boys didn't fully accept me into their social circles because I was a girl. The first time I cut my hair really short I had people say things like "oh but your long hair was so pretty why would you cut it?" When my peers started wearing makeup, they tried to pressure me into wearing it too. (I'm autistic cannot wear makeup because it triggers my sensory issues). I have always felt uncomfortable and judged by others when I presented more masculine and I felt the need to keep my more "boyish" interests to myself to avoid mockery from others. I present more feminine now, and while I am okay presenting this way, I feel as though it isn't really my choice. Ultra feminine women are vilified by society for being "vapid" and "trying too hard", but I'd also like add that masculine/gnc women are not treated any better. There is still an immense amount of pressure for women to perform femininity, and those who don't/can't are often treated as deviant or wrong.

Also when it comes to gender conformity and stereotypes, viking men were also notorious for wearing makeup and perfume and being very well-groomed. A lot of men today see vikings as this symbol of raw and hard masculinity, but their masculinity and gender expression were pretty different than ours.

if you assume someone's sexuality by their clothes, i.e if a man was to wear a dress and u automatically label him as gay or bisexual, is this not the same issue everyone faces when choosing to explore different gender expressions? Like people try to insult men who are more feminine, using gay as an insult, so what is the difference between someone trying to attack a person and everyone else making assumptions, either way you are labelling them and their sexuality due to the way they present themselves (through clothing etc). I think people should be free to dress as they please, whether or not you mean harm, ur taking steps back, proving to those who don't agree w being more fluid w femininity and masculinity, that clothes do define sexuality, when this is exactly what we are trying to disprove. One example being the Harry Styles situation.

God. Thank you. Thank you for this. As an ultra-feminine woman who has been ultra-feminine *my entire life* (I never went through a "tomboy" phase, even when I was young!) I am so fking tired of being automatically assumed to be evil, catty, bitchy, a gossip, a bad friend, etc....JUST because of the way I prefer to present myself. It's wild that loving makeup or fake eyelashes or long nails means we're put under such a minimizing and demeaning label. Femininity isn't bad and evil and being feminine, no matter who you are, shouldn't be something so demonized. Thank you. ♥

I think people feel afraid of feminity, i think the feminine energy can be very powerful and overwhelming ( in a good way )... People don't know sometimes how to react to it because it brings some insecurity of them to the surface and their way of dealing with it is putting the blame on the feminine person. You are perfect just the way you are, embrace who you are, people are just to insecure and immature. I know a lot of people that are feminine and very chic and are the sweetest souls!

Growing up (as a straight, cisgender girl), the "tomboy" and "girly girl" dichotomies made me confused and conflicted. I never considered myself the 'ultra-feminine' type (despite possessing some 'girly' traits), yet I don't want to be classified as a tomboy either. Thankfully, I've been learning to acknowledge the masculinity/femininity spectrum since my late teens and early 20s. It's not like anybody's stopping me from wearing makeup while camping, hiking, cycling, snowboarding, etc. Speaking on the "tomboy" and "girly girl" dichotomies, I think they can be equally harmful in different ways. Too 'feminine' and you won't be taken seriously, despite some of the benefits/privileges you may reap. Too 'masculine' and you're not considered desirable by certain groups of people, even if you're granted access to the "boys' club." In hindsight, there's still a long way to go in fully acknowledging the spectra of gender and masculinity/femininity. this is so true. i remember about a month ago i went to a friend's birthday party and I might have been reading into this but because I was wearing makeup, and I'm a blond skinny girl, and clearly cared about fashion and my appearance, i was treated very strangely by some of the girls at the party I didn't know. they pretty much scoffed at everything i said, and one of them even said i was acting like sharpay, trying to use it as an insult. I could tell the way they were acting around me was because of their own insecurities, and i felt bad that they felt like they had to treat me like that to feel better about themselves. That to reassure themselves that they weren't like other girls, other girls being girls like me, they had to try and make those other girls feel bad about expressing and presenting themselves how they want to.

Just a comment from the sideline, as I am not really your target audience: I am 48 years old. When I was a young person, things were - on the surface at least - less complicated. You were basically pressed into your gender stereotype mold and that‘s where you stayed. No matter how untrue to yourself that felt. I grew up as a classic tomboy girl. I hated wearing skirts and girly clothes and anything pink or glittery. I wanted short hair. I hated dolls and preferred to play with toy cars and collect soccer cards. I preferred boys as friends. Until today I still prefer the friendship of men and have problems with the social rules of interaction among women. The way they behave and treat each other is strange to me. If I were a younger woman today, maybe I would have had the chance to explore this side of me further. Young people and the way they stand up against strict binary mindframes is amazing. It complicates life but at the same time it is liberating because it challenges people to really look at themselves, who they are and who they want to be.

I grew up during the taTu era. I’m old lol. Nevertheless, my years allow me to say yes, yes, YES to this whole video essay. I have a ten year old girl who we are trying to raise without any of the bias of our own upbringing, as both my husband and I reject the rigidity of own upbringings. My husband grew up being stigmatized. I grew up being stigmatized. We share our experiences with our daughter as appropriate as she grows, and have organically grown (so far) an open-minded, beautiful little girl. She has cheered for every Pride commercial and show she’s seen this month, begged for a “Yuri on Ice!” Poster for her wall (to go next to the BTS one, because “Mommy! Yurio and Beka are my OTP!”) She sat her friend down the other day when she said, “why do you want to wear pink? It’s so girly!” And proceeded to explain why she found the comment hurtful and that colors didn’t have genders, “they’re fluid! They can be anything!” My point is this: how we raise our children matters. The content we expose our children to matters. The questions we answer, and how we do, matter. Being open, being honest, and being willing to have the uncomfortable conversation with our children matter. To all those wondering (and that have made it this far) I’m 41. I was born in 1980. I’ve seen more than I want to admit. But I see my daughter and how we raise her as our most important contribution to society. And to all the “kids” reading this? Don’t give up on your parents. Ask the tough questions. Force the issue. Be calm, be measured, and be a teacher when you need to be. Accept you may not be able to change minds, but aim to change HEARTS. No one is a lost cause if you don’t let them be. And as for Billie, and Harry, and male Korean makeup norms, etc? Dear Flying Spaghetti Monster, leave it alone. Leave them all alone. Every time I see a tweet or someone shaming someone for this, I want to ragequit the internet. Srsly. Again, amazing job. Brava.

I was always into “boy” things (transformers G.I.JOS, science, etc) and never really liked girly things. I always frowned upon girly things around that time because I thought “if it was too “girly” I couldn’t do it” or “I’m not a girly girl pink is for them only”. Since I was brought up with these gender stereotypes I kinda had a crisis in the summer of going into fifth grade. I found out I was gay and I found out I was non-binary, for the first few months I felt I could NOT wear pink, dresses, skirts, and girly things. I don't think she's ''bi'' but I think it's offensive to call that song ''problematic''. There are more sexualities then straight, gay and bi. I kissed a girl and girls made me understand that it's okey and that that's just my sexuality and that I'm not the only one. It's annoying that just because we're a small minority group we're told we're ''bad'' for our sexual attractions and that we're just straight woman looking for a mens attention. I had a VEEEERY different experience growing up as a "tom boy" and still do. One thing about that "not like other girls" trope is that you can't be TOO masculine because that is a big no no. Anyone who wasn't a child made fun of me for not being girly, were extra aggressive and disrespectful or just straight up said that that was something wrong with me because I didn't presented feminine enough (aka not wearing dresses, not having "female interests", being loud, etc ). This of course until I hit my unfortunately very early puberty and started being heavily sexualized, so the behavior changed from calling names and aggressive judgement to grooming and "no one is going to like/want you" type of manipulation. I am the same age as Billie (and I really really love her music) and I still don't do certain things like make up, heels and well, shaving, but it doesn't matter if I'm wearing short shorts and cropped tops or baggy clothes, I still get hate for "not taking enough care of myself" or something worse so yeah, the exact opposite of being treated with more respect

As long as she isn’t using queerness as profit and stuff I don’t think it’s a huge issue? Sadly there’s a lot of gray area. If she ends up saying she’s straight again, then idk how to feel lol. There’s something to be said about not forcing celebrities to come out. However, as a sapphic woman watching the Lost Cause music video made me a little sick to my stomach - it was an obvious use of feminine bodies as set pieces to billie’s song - the big issue here is that her “aesthetic” and the way she framed that music video was through using the male gaze and fantasy of what a “girls sleepover” is like - pillow fights, “exploration” ect - even though she produced it, it still reads like a music video made in the male fantasy/male gaze. In most music videos, women’s bodies are used as set pieces (not like backup dancers, just women existing and being pretty/sexualized and nothing else) and Billie did exactly that in this music video. She used these women and played with the idea of lesbian sexuality specifically with this song - because the song is being sang to a man it feels like the women set pieces and possible lesbian sexuality are used as revenge on the man she’s singing to. In the music video, she doesn’t even often look at the women around her, but only to the camera and makes chemistry with that - with the viewer and the man she’s singing to in the song. No I don’t think that we should force celebrities to reveal their sexuality - everyone deserves privacy, but when statements like “I love girls” are made in response to criticism for queerbating from the community affected - it only feels more confirming and a half-assed response. It’s not about her presenting as feminine, it’s about her recycling these music industry tropes (women set pieces, performative bisexuality) only after she started presenting more feminine and using the queer relationships/aesthetic/community to appear more interesting - perhaps because her branding is changing to be more industry aligned (feminine/sexualized) rather than her original masculine-but-soft branding. I mean this isn’t the only shady stuff she needs to be held accountable for (using aave & black culture, & dating a 29 year old racist homophobe). I just thought the topic of queerbating might need a sapphic voice to explain why it felt toll so icky and queerbate-y.

we shouldnt make a 19 year old girl apologize for a 29 year old mans choices that relationship is definitely predatory and she was probably groomed but i agree with everything else, tbh billie could have cleared it up but how she responded with the “i love girls” was irresponsible. the music video did kind of make me feel icky ish but that could have been bc im part of the community? it bothers me that it was directed for the male gaze and i feel like billie could have given the same message more clearly without making it so flirty?? idk how to describe it but yeah thats my opinion

@@doodoo240 she shouldn’t apologize for his actions but her being in a relationship with him definitely does reflect on her character. she can’t pretend to be a POC and LGBT activist and then date people who are openly against those groups. it makes no type of sense and shows a lack of honesty on her part. tolerating your boyfriend’s homophobia and racism is still tolerating homophobia and racism. that’s what people don’t like and want her to address…

I am non-binary and someone expressing themselves in a gender nonconformist way IS NOT QUEERBAITING AT ALL. It is literally someone just existing as a person. I have noticed that liberals who want to destroy these conservative boxes fall into the same trap of putting everything in boxes. I think that is how our culture promotes reality and is something that needs to be unlearned by people who actually care about progress and not being in trend with "wokeness".

Hearing that “just because legally you are an adult, doesn’t mean mentally you are” made me feel a bit better about myself.. I’m 22 and I still feel like a 19 year old trying to still figure out where I need to go in life~ this whole video made me feel more confident in myself and my fashion. Like for instance I kept hearing my mother say “you’re not wearing a dress” at a wedding I was recently at.. it made me feel like what I wore wasn’t good enough (even though it was a nice smart casual with jeans and a jacket). But watching this video made me feel like it’s okay to wear pants as smart casual…. Thank you Salem for putting these videos up. Because they are the truth and it needs to be said.

Thank u. I dont see anything wrong with such songs or MV's If its something between consenting adults they can do what they want. And sorry but as long as what billie dies isnt directing harming anyone it isnt bad at all. And even if some men will get to wrong conclusions get a wrong perspective od what ever etc. That is the fault of them men and not billies responsibility to change. I mean that would be as going to a muslim women wearing a niqab and saying "yeah when u wear that men could think its okay to expect that from women. U are harming them change your behavior" Yeah the optession of lgbt people is wrong, but telling consenting adults what to do and what not is wrong. Sorry but i think billies sexuality shouldnt be important in that matter. She has the freedom to do that as an artist that she is. If she want to portray something that goes into a lesbian direction, that is okay. She could even make explicitly a song about it, without being lesbian, its called freedom of art. If something is okay if one sexuality does it but not if the other does it, something at your judging system is heavily off

This conversation is frustrating to me. I was a tomboy growing up then lived in baggy clothes until I was around 18. The ONLY reason I took off my hoody, was because I was encouraged to do so (on a hot day) by my boyfriend at the time. I was terrified to be seen in a T-shirt, and I remember the day vividly. It was because he gave me confidence and started to encourage me to like myself a bit more. Since then, I have become more feminine over time, but still most comfy in jeans and a cosy top. It strikes me that Billie is doing just that, growing, learning to love herself, exploring her style… the problem for her is that she has the eyes of the world on her while she does it. Do we not remember how badly this can go for people? Britney? We all need to back a ways off and let her do her thing. She is an absolute queen and a talent for the ages.

I was also "tomboy" growing up and alot of my friends were talked down about (people calling them h**s, s**ts, etc) so it bended my look on how women should dress act etc. I was also one of those girls that "didn't count" in those male convos and I feel like it did have a big impact on my younger perception of other women and it bothers me so much now that I was like that!

With celebrities, it's especially hard to tell what their true feelings and wants are because we never know what their managers are pushing them to do, what clothes/styles/etc. were their idea or not. Celebrities get fed lines for interviews and made to sign contracts with things they might not 100% like, so that ads to the complexity.

The end of your sister's segment made me tear up. It's so crazy how internalized this is for all of us and it just hit me how frustrating it's been making me feel all this time. Its heartbreaking but so unifying to know every girl born into this world goes through this, since growing up its always such an isolating experience (since the whole issue always pits women against each other). Thank you both so much for your commentary. Hearing this issue being so articulately deconstructed has helped me understand my own experience with it so much. It makes me feel so much empathy and love towards all women/fem people, knowing that this is a battle we're fighting together rather than alone. I wish everyone the best, and I hope you all can recover and find yourselves through this crazy world we're living through

I don’t think this situation has to do anything with femininity or masculinity. The statement itself is vague and bold (on purpose?most likely ), the meaning behind it could’ve been innocent (in terms of liking girls in a non sexual/romantic manner) just displayed with the intention of also getting the attention of the 🏳️‍🌈 community. With a team like the one Billie has, I doubt that her and or her team didn’t know what the public’s reaction was possibly going to be by posting that post (especially in current times) Could’ve been a market strategy that backfired.

Well as an adult I wear T-shirts I have no friends and I have a shaved head. I get so many questions about why I don't dress up, or why I'm not "girly" anymore. It's honestly exhausting. I used to be a pick me girl for male validation as well even though deep down I knew how much I loved “feminine” things such as make-up and dress. when i first came out (a bit over a year ago) i always thought i was too feminine or basic to be queer. i was scared that other queer people wouldnt know im a part of the community too. i changed my style and cut my hair which i later regret. i still miss looking as feminine as i used to ever since i cut my hair. i just wish that people would believe me if i told them im queer even tho im feminine and in a heteronormative relationship (kinda since im bigender). i seriously hate the stereotypes among the lgbtq+ community. i just want to be my feminine omnisexual bigender self without anyone doubting it.

Until I started to become more feminine they distanced themselves or stay but only bc they want to umm let’s say date. This hit closer to home without me realizing making me see yes I changed and bc of that I’ll have things come at me but in the end that doesn’t matter. I like being me and I am different my culture is different ( Native and Hispanic) I’ll figure myself out a long process and no labels can define that. 🥰

Your sisters story REALLY resonated with me, I was never a “pick me” girl but I definitely was a tomboy and had the “not like other girls” mindset until like 6th grade. I was scared to try and be feminine, since it felt like I was giving in to the standards. On top of that most of my friends who were girls never lasted long. I was friends with mostly guys. This whole idea of girls who were feminine were “bad was kind of reinforced”. It wasn’t unlit recently that I wore full makeup for the first time at a dance and I was surprised to look in the mirror and feel… FINE I liked the way I looked, I would never wear makeup on a daily basis but for that one night it was really nice. I’m a senior now and I’ve recently been experimenting with my style and trying out overalls and even a skirt (younger me would be shocked) and I’ve had a GIANT boost in self confidence that I’ve never felt before. I love my overalls so much I wish I could wear them all the time. I was terrified to wear the skirt I bought but once I did I actually really liked it. Don’t let yourself get trapped in any box you put yourself in, you should always feel free to wear/do whatever you want. And if your scared just go for it, it can really help you.
