From Billy's 1978 album, " 52nd Street", this was the first of his 4 albums to top the charts and won him 2 Grammys. This jazzy song, about his Mom, is a poignant and beautiful song that elicits a range of emotions. The lyrics reflect a sense of longing, admiration and nostalgia and showcases Billy's storytelling prowess. The instruments are outstanding, the Fenders Rhodes, the clarinet, the sax, the drums all delivering a happy jazzy arrangement. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Rob. 👏👏 Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

One of the best tunes off BJ's "52nd Street"and a favorite of mine. Great selection, Rob. Great reaction, too, Harri -- the vocal, the groove and vibe are tough to beat!

52nd Street is a fantastic album. Won the Grammy for best album in the year of its release. Joel is so extremely versatile. His drummer then, Liberty Devito, was sooo good. Just The Way You Are came out on the previous album to this.

I’ve seen Billy Joel at least a dozen times. It’s rare that he plays this gem. But when he did live us true fans knew it was a deep dive into the obscure songs only us long time fans would appreciate.

Great choice! You can't go wrong with any song from 52nd Street, The Stranger, Glass Houses and River of Dreams. His cover of "Hey Girl" showcases his vocals as does Big Man on Mulberry St. Haven't seen anyone react to that. Also his U.S.S.R. "The Bridge" tour. While singing You May Be Right, he motions for a girl in front to tie his shoe. I would have passed out! 😂 He was 1st rock artist invited to U.S.SR. He crowd surfed and the Russians didnt want to give him back. Billy didn't miss a beat and kept singing while being passed around. The man is a music making machine. A true legend. Love to watch your reactions to Billy and Barry Manilow. The soundtrack of my teens. ❤❤❤

@@jamishops I think there is only the title track to go now, although like Souvenir from Streetlife Serenade, it is quite short and almost seems more like an outro to round off the album. And I think you probably requested most of the album yourself. 😊

Great request Rob Taylor and great reaction, Harri! Harri, I can't tell if the high-pitched instrument is a piccolo or a keyboard/synthesizer that sounds like a piccolo. I still have this vinyl album from December 1978 as a Christmas present. I haven't heard "Rosalinda's Eyes" in decades. This reaction made my day!!! 🙂

It is actually a soprano recorder played by the late multi-instrumentalist George Marge who also played various forms of clarinet, flute, horns, saxophone and other reed or woodwind instruments. He died at the age of just 52-year-old, only seven years after this recording.

Not trying to be a dick here as you generally have it right bar some of the finer detail, but it was the first mass-produced, commercial CD made.

Great song to his mom.
@jamishops8 ай бұрын
Billy has said he wrote it as the love letter his dad should have written for his mom, who was a hopeless romantic. His dad wasn’t a professional musician, but apparently a fantastic piano player. When fleeing Nazi Germany in the 1930s Billy’s dad and grandparents spent a year or two in Cuba awaiting entrance to the US.They divorced when he was 7.

Harri. You are so cool and on target with all your inputs. Regardless of genre you get it. Really fun to share the appreciation. One simple little Billy Joel song nobody seems to love is terribly titular and very deep with such awfully few words. Check it if you would: souvenir. Thanks for all you do for us on the Rocky tides.

Hey Harri, from this same LP, you should check out "Zanzibar"... a great Jazz number with an amazing trumpet solo by the legendary Freddie Hubbard.

@@seanscanlon9067that was going to be my request for this month, the live version with Toots playing harmonics, but decided to go with She’s Right on Time. I’ve never understood why She’s Right on Time is one of Billy’s favorites. It’s a good song, but far from one of my favs of his.
