Brad's got this one right. It's sincere. The whole innocent man album has a throwback sound, particularly thos one, uptown girl, for the longest time...the video was a parody of the old Ed Sullivan show that featured variety acts.

Brad got it. This is from Billy's "Innocent Man", which is a concept album. It's a tribute to the American popular music of his adolescent years with him paying homage to a number of different and popular American musical styles from the late 1950s and early 1960s, most notably doo-wop and soul music.

This is Billy Joel in the eighties (1983) giving tribute to the music of the 1950s/60s! The show he was supposed to be on wa the Ed Sullivan Show! This song is about keeping the lines of communication open in a relationship so there’s no misunderstanding! Brad is right this time! ❤️❤️

I agree 100%, he just has so many great songs. This is a great song, no complaints. But, I don't think it would make my top ten list of favorite Billy Joel song. Undoubtedly it would make many people's top ten because it's a really good song. I mean no disrespect whatsoever, Billy just has such an extensive catalog of great songs that this wouldn't make the top ten for me personally.

Lol, that girl looks a lot like Lex, pretty ladies. Also, Brad is very correct on everything he stated. The song meaning and yes, dance music, upbeat, fun. You're suppose to move! Lex, it sounds '80s, just throwback to the '50s, '60s. Like doo wop, Motown, older R&B. It's like some of Phil Collins and Elton John (a pianist just like Billy) songs during the '80s, '90s. Billy Joel , Elton John, and Phil Collins are very versatile artists. Video had lots of throwback references. Ed Sullivan Show (RIP) and others. Including Rodney Dangerfield (RIP, very funny comedian and actor).

Per Songfacts In his biography The Life and Times of an Angry Young Man, Billy Joel talks about when he first started dating Christie Brinkley. He says that she was the first person he could ever just talk to, and they would spent hours just talking - this was the basis for "Tell Her About It." It's simply about an a-ha moment for Joel when he realized that you could actually have a soul mate. Joel and Brinkley met in 1982, married in 1985 and divorced in 1994. The song has an early '60s feel, which is something they played up in the video, which shows Joel performing on The Ed Sullivan Show as "BJ and the Affordables." The comedian Rodney Dangerfield also appears in the video, getting no respect. Joel wrote the theme song for Dangerfield's movie Easy Money, which also appears on An Innocent Man.

On this channel, Lex has said she can be cynical. I never REALLY saw it until this reaction! Brad's right. This is a song reminding good men to reassure and communicate with their significant others, no more no less. And, the reason the video is set in 1963 is because the music is very 60's-sounding. Joel has a few songs in his catalog that are throwbacks to his teen years.

It's from the 80s, from Billy Joel's Innocent Man album. His stuff is, stylistically, all over the genres and decades. He's done ballads, hard rock, soft rock, funk, bubble-gum pop, doo-wop, jazz, blues and a lot more. He's like a song-writing Renaissance man. Innocent Man is a great song too. I also recommend River of Dreams (kind of a pop song but with a gospel feel sprinkled in). Also, if you haven't yet - - Goodnight Saigon and NY State of Mind (preferably live from Old Grey Whistle Test) and Pressure (with the original vid). P.S. That announcer backstage is impersonating Ed Sullivan who had a must-see variety show that ran (with him as host) for 23 years. That show launched countless stars, particularly musical performers and comedians. Standing next to Sullivan is real-life comedian and popular 80s-actor Rodney Dangerfield, playing himself. Billy Joel's videos are usually pretty entertaining. Nice reaction. All the best.

In case you didn't know, the video was supposed to be The Ed Sullivan show (the Ed Sullivan theater is where the Late Show has filmed for decades) from the 50s/60s. The late, great insult comic Rodney Dangerfield was the old guy in the suit. He made regular appearances on talk shows like The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson/David Letterman, acted in the 80s movies like "Caddyshack", etc.

This song is from the 1983 album An Innocent Man that was a homage to the music from the 50s and 60s that Billy grew up listening to, with this being a nod to the Motown sound and girl groups like Diana Ross and The Supremes, whereas Uptown Girl was a nod to Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons and The Longest Time to the doo-wop groups like Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers. The video is meant to recreate The Ed Sullivan Show where Billy first saw The Beatles and which ran from the late 40s to the early 70s.

This particular song was inspired, by Diana Ross and the Supremes. Billy loved all those songs where Diana was essentially giving young girls advice on love, and whatnot. He wanted to do something like that, but from a guy’s perspective. This explanation was from Billy Joel himself during one of his interview sessions on the Billy Joel Channel, when it was on Sirius XM. He is 100% genuine in trying to give the guy honest advice on relationships with their girl.

Lex the lyrics were “let her know how much you care” and “let her know that you’re for real”. The song was him offering advice to men (like him) who lose someone they love through lack of attention, not expressing their emotions and not being open & honest. He was embracing his 50’s childhood while singing a warning to not lose a great love as he did through lack of time, attention and communication.

He's saying that just because you haven't done anything wrong, that's cold comfort if she feels neglected or ignored and leaves you. He's saying that when you're in love, you're vulnerable and that makes you feel insecure. If you don't talk to your women and reassure her, she may get uncomfortable enough to end the relationship. He's saying TELL HER HOW YOU FEEL! DON"T TAKE HER FOR GRANTED! Share your thoughts and dreams with her; INCLUDE HER in the things you care about if you care about her. Yes, the song is sincere. It's not about 'game', it's about being real with your women and appreciating her.
