This Empress got what she deserved. The Emperor pushed so hard for heirs that all of the consorts wanted the status so that began plotting to kill the others. Not to say all blame was to the Emperor because each woman made her own choice to do bad. The Emperor knew though deep down Ruyi was the only one completely faithful and devoted to him and he continued to let her down. I do blame the Emperor for everything that was done to Ruyi and all the heartbreaks she endured.

Just want to say that for many of the villains in this show, their last words are always worth listening to, because often times they actually have a deep awareness of the things that happened around them. The empress was right in many ways - she said that the emperor was cold and heartless, and that his wives would surely suffer, this was true. She said that because of him, whoever takes over the empress' seat would not have a better ending than her, that is also true. In the end, with Wei Yanwan, she also said, in a fit of spite, that of all the people in the harem, no one had an ounce of true feelings for him, except for Ruyi, but then even she was driven away from him. It just makes it more satisfying, one villainous person speaking the cold, hard truth to another villainous person. In the end, I think the worse person in the entire show was just the emperor - all his wives suffered because of him, and I don't think he ever truly acknowledged his own faults, he was just proven wrong about Wei Yanwan and Ruyi, but he never really understood how so many things happened because of him, how the endings of so many characters were tragic because of him; in the end I think he was just sad because Ruyi was gone, but nothing more than that.
