In this video: We are in the Ontario forests seeking out Paper Birch Trees and Paper Birch Seedlings on the forest floor. The seedlings are sprouting in mid May here, however, they wont be easily identifiable until early or mid June, when the second set of leaves come out. We also show how to sow the Birch seeds collected in Part 1-

Really glad i found your video! We have a lot of the beautful 'Ornäs birch' where i live (Betula Pendula Dalecarlica). My interest for plants has just recently emerged, and trees have been something that fascinated me, especially that dalecarlica! I thought I was way too late for collecting seeds, but it seems now is just the right time! :D

So, if I go out and find some birch tree seeds out in my back yard, can I plant them inside right away or do I have to dry them first

The cluster of seedlings aren't birch-they're Box Alder(Acer negundo) We have a tree in South Africa which litters the whole garden with seedlings with leaves just like those. Yours happened to have been found in the vicinity of birch catkins. I've been growing birch from seed the past 30 years. just thought you'd find it interesting.

Karl Haese they do look very similar to box elder or the Manitoba maple common in Ontario. However - these are 100% birch tree seedlings. I have been growing them over the summer since creating his video, and they have matured into beautiful little seedlings with full birch leaves, now easily identifiable. In my experience, birch trees are one of the hardest newly sprouted seedlings to identify, especially with the many varieties throughout North America. Thanks for the comment- I will be sure to upload an update when I am able. Enjoy :)

weird-my birch seedlings didn't have that prominent lobe 3/4's up in the leaves, but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt Jeremiah!

This is a Paper Birch we specified in the video. Lots of different varieties, but they will all have subtle differences in seed dispersal and flowering and will have slightly different bark, leaves as well as general form. Let me know if I can help out with any questions. Enjoy.

I love birches. They are important to the process of ecological succession in the temperate world. The first trees to form woodlands over acidic soils, paving the way for tree species of oak. Could you do a video on lime tree (Tilia sp.) propagation from seed?
