In 1986 I had a BOP in my apartment. I planted it in my Mother's yard because I moved to another city. It is no 2024 and the plant is still alive.

I bought a BOP plant for my wife on our first anniversary because we loved seeing the flowers every day while on our honeymoon in the Canary Islands. That was 17 years ago and thrilled to finally say it sprouted its first flower ever 3 days ago. The leaves have always been green and healthy and had lost hope that it would ever bloom but here it finally is and totally worth the wait.

Very symbolically, in my experience this plant is very similar to marriage. Don’t expect immediate results and you may not see the fruits of your labor until many years down the road. Keep at it and continue to care for it and don’t lose hope. I never realized 17 years ago what a symbolic anniversary gift this would end up being. 😁

Ok, this video was so useful. I bought a BoP this weekend, and it’s now my pride and joy - I’m putting it in direct light by a south facing window for an hour or two a day, then it spends the rest of the time in the corner of the room - sounds like this isn’t as insane as I feared, ha!

My husband works is a residential building and someone threw one out he took it home for me. It was in apretty bad shape. I literally put it in a sunny window, give it well water, and repotted it as soon as i got it. ( so exact opposite of everything said here lol) it is thriving!!!! In 1 year i got atleast 5 new leaves and over a foot higher. I didnt even k ow what kind of plant it was. I do love this plant. So im learning now. ( why i am here)

Thank you for this fine video. I might add, that I had best results in blooming when the Strelizia was kept at slightly lower winter temperatures. So I had them wintering in various places, even in basements when there was a good window. Or in a bedroom, where it is cooler than in the living room. I´ve had them for over 30 years, and they were always such a joy. In summer I had them on the balcony, or in the garden, we had to move around quite a bit. Ironically I lost my first plant in Italy, when winter came too soon and too fast, and it was then over 25 years old. Bought a new one right away, and this is the better one now, it has 10 flowers open right now, and sits in my Mom´s wintergarden, because it´s still too chancy for putting it outside. (I live in Germany, and it´s April.) We share the joy of having it around!

Encouraging advice! Thank you so much. I realized I had NO clue about how to maintain my BOP. Watching this informed me in such a positive manner. I do have two questions; 1) May I set my BOP outside on my balcony for around 2 hours a day in this spring/summer time weather? 2) I noticed a lot of white fuzzy dots on my leaves - which I wiped away. I am wondering what causes this?

What should I do with leaves that are severely curling? I now know I have too low humidity but should I cut the ones off that are very curled? Also I recently moved and a few stalks of my giant broke :( I taped it back together using a stick as support and it’s not too badly curling but is it a goner and better if I just chop the leaf? Also random question, how long does it take for a new leaf to unfurl I’ve got an 8 foot ?

Thanks for a great video! I have my bird of paradise in the living room around 3 meters away from the window. The window is a huge panorma window kind with white sheer curtains. Will the bird of paradise be happier right next to the window with the sunlight filtering through the curtains or should I keep it where it is? There is enough bright daylight in all my living room due to the big panorama window but no sunrays falling on it where it is right now. Also how dry should the upper layers of soil be before i water it again? A little dry or very dry? ❤

If the room is super bright then it's probably fine where it is, but they'll always appreciate a bit of extra light. Perhaps over the winter move it closer 💚

Good morning Claire. Yesterday I bought a BOP plant from B&Q for £37 and it is gorgeous. Getting it home I realised that I knew absolutely nothing about taking care of it. Thankfully I found you! We have a small conservatory but the roof is opaque and although it will be getting sunlight it will be slightly muted as opposed to bright clean sunlight. Will this be okay? Also, do they like music?? Can I ask if you have covered the Money Tree/Luck Tree that seems to be very popular? Thanks again for an excellent video.
@TheJungleHaven
@TheJungleHaven 2 жыл бұрын
Congrats on your BOP find! B&Q have some great plants nowadays! Yes, filtered light is absolutely fine for this plant, so long as the area itself is fairly bright. I've heard so many things about music and plants, but I can't say I've ever actually put it to the test. I've heard Mozart is supposed to help with plant growth (perhaps I'll try it at some point) 😂 💚

Hi Claire, I think your video was great. I have just received my bird of paradise and wondered if you could give me some more advice though? It has arrived, though we'll packaged, totally root bound. It's thick roots are pouring out of the bottom of the pot. Also it has what looks like a new shoot sprouting, it's about 2 inches, but it's quite yellow. What should i do ? Thanks!🪴🪴🪴🪴
@TheJungleHaven
@TheJungleHaven Жыл бұрын
I'd personally repot right away if it's in desperate need - the yellowing growth is likely because it can't absorb any more nutrients because it's so root bound 💚

My Bird of Paradise grew its longest, tallest leaf several months ago, but remained furled. Today, I did some research & found a man who wrapped a wet sponge around the bottom & moved it up, squeezing it until there was a squeaking sound. He did this a few times, & the leaf began to part at the bottom. I tried this a few times with no result until a few hours later, it began to unfurl. Then I took my mister & sprayed into the opening. Why don't the leaves unfurl naturally within weeks of reaching full length?

I live in a house in Southern California, that has so called bird of paradise plants outside my bedroom window in full sun during the summer which gets to 100+ degrees F 37.78 +Celsius. It's a huge thing, not the delicate finicky plant you describe. So I am a bit confused. Those are the correct flowers you showed, but ours are outside, planted in the ground. They have lived through harsh desert fall/autumn winds, frosty winter nights and torrential rains. Where I live these are not considered delicate indoor house plants. They are for the outdoors. Am I missing something? Are these really the same plants?

Unless you've gone up crazy huge pot sizes then I'd maybe just see how it does and monitor it closely..? Be so careful not to give it too much water in the meantime though, as obviously with way more soil it probably won't need to be watered as frequently 💚

Have a bird of paradise that I put in as self watering pot is that a good pot for it it started curling on its leaves and browning sell from your video I think it might be the humidity but can you just let me know if the self watering pot is OK
@TheJungleHaven
@TheJungleHaven 2 жыл бұрын
Are you using pon or soil in your self watering pot? I personally only use those pots with pon, as I've found soil can actually cause issues such as root rot when used with self watering pots... It could absolutely be down to lack of humidity too, but if it's only started since you began using this new pot, I'd be tempted to check the roots 💚

@TheJungleHaven
@TheJungleHaven 2 жыл бұрын
I've never suffered with pests with mine, but yes they can affect these plants. It depends on the type of pest, but my go-to with lots of pest treatments is provanto bug killer. Regularly checking your plants and wiping down both sides of their leaves is the best possible way to prevent/catch any infestation early. I've also heard predatory mites can be a great option!
