Yess I love bitterballen so much! Born in Australia to a Dutch family and we always make bitterballen for christmas day as a bit of a family tradition. They have to be evenly divvied out otherwise everyone argues over who’s had more 😂

As a Dutchie, when travelling through Australia, I’ve met quite a few Australians who have Dutch (grand)parents. Many could not speak or understand Dutch, which they kinda regretted… can you maybe speak Or understand a bit of it?

Love the tallow. As a dutchie, never had them fried in that! BUT.... Bitterballen are not made with minced beef, but with slowly cooked veal. Then you dice the veal into cubes and mix them with your salpicon.

I wanted to to do bitterballen/vleeskroket myself, but when i saw what it takes to to prepare and cook the veal, i just decided to go the netherlands instead. Made from scratch, this is not an easy dish. Still delicious!

I’m not Dutch but in Belgium we regularly have bitterballen with french fries too. I’ve always just bought them deep frozen and never even wondered how they were made. But this looks so delicious I’ll have to try it out!

Being Dutch myself, I used to help my parents make those as well as croquettes. They took so long to make and were gone in no time. I don't do it anymore because of my disabilities but still enjoy eating them.

Bitterballen and snert are probably absorbed into Indonesian cuisine. We usually use chicken for bitterballen here, since beef is more expensive. I also stumbled upon sop snerek/senerek made with red bean 😁

Ha! Amazing, as a Dutchy I love them! Only a tiny difference between the ‘official’ recipe. We don’t make it with ground beef, but with beef stew. So you end up with nice bits of meat strings. But, of course, many thanks to share a bit of Dutch culture ✌️🧆

Very nice! For me as a Dutchy the god level of bitterballen/kroketten is the goulash kroket. Basically you use hungarian goulash stew as the filling for the bitterbal.
