Today we have a question from Derrick who feels really crummy about a recent situation at his BJJ Gym...
He is a 3-Stripe White Belt In Jiu-Jitsu, on top of being a bigger, so he tries his best to be as good of a training partner possible without hurting anyone, rolling soft in all his rounds.
Well, recently Derrick and his coach were rolling, and they ended up in the 50/50 Position and, out of nowhere, he injured his coach.
It was a complete accident and even the coach doesn't blame Derrick.
Even though this is true Derrick still feels bad and doesn't know what he should do to make up for the injury.
Well, I give Derrick a few pieces of advice, while also telling you a few stories about injuries I personally suffered in practices, and how I tend to deal with my own injuries when they happen in class.
Hopefully you find these ideas useful for you.

That's how I gauge my injuries. If my partner hears a *snap* and stops rolling, I might be okay. If the entire room stops rolling, I'm definitely injured.

Injuries suck but they're real. A coach demoed a double leg on me once and then he dropped his weight on me, he accidentally smashed one of my teeth into my lip. Blood everywhere, tooth physically impaled into my lip. Coach felt horrible and everyone stopped class to fuss, but like... you all ain't gonna fix my lip, so go do your double legs.

In judo, I once got severely injured by a white belt. I was working with a white belt heavyweight (I am also a heavyweight, was a brown belt at the time) and we were doing throw-for-throw, so I would throw him with no resistance, he would then throw me with no resistance etc. I went to throw him with a gentle Osotogari (Major Outer Reap), he got scared, and he just sat down onto the floor, taking my right leg with him. The entire room heard such viciously loud pops and I was in agonizing pain, I couldn't walk. I thought the majority of the damage was in my ankle, but the truth was, my ACL got destroyed, and so did parts of my meniscus. I had to get surgery the following year because the injury got worse. When I first started judo, one of my coaches at the time told me "the most dangerous person on the mat is the biggest white belt" and it's absolutely true. What did I learn from this injury with this white belt? Well, there's a lot of things... maybe my Osotogari was poorly performed as I was trying to be gentle (perhaps too gentle), or maybe I should have gone for a different kind of throw, like a Sasae Tsuri Komi Ashi (Popping Drawing Ankle Throw). I also had to remind myself that it wasn't the white belt's fault, as sometimes, we can involuntarily do something out of instinct or reflex, when we don't want to, and this is especially common with beginners in grappling sports.

Some morbidly obese bjj blackbelt went to our gym and normally would just spend his gym session on striking. When there's a bjj class every once in while he tries to tell us what to do, even though our purple belt coach who was the official trainer was around. Then one time our coach came in late, I wasn't there, but he demoed a kimura on a college girl who was a new student, it was her 1st month I think. And by accident the dude injured her. He never came back, the young lady continued to attend bjj and mma sessions but after a month she never returned. He did try to offer her money for her medical bills though so at least there's that. But it was unfortunate that because of this one event, she'll avoid bjj and mma altogether after the incident.

Dear Chewy. The reason we feel weirdly about the term "Professor" is because it has connotations to something elite in academia, but we're in a sporting scene, so it seems out of place. However, a Brazilian told me that it just means "Teacher" in Portuguese.

I accidentally dumped the smallest person in the gym because we were doing situational sparring and I didn't realise at what point the situational sparring scenario stopped, i.e. if they recover guard or stand up from closed guard that's the end of the spar etc...I didn't realise that she had stopped sparring and I kept going and she was unprepared when I took the back and we crashed face first into the mat. I didn't injure her and apologised but later on I heard some really aggressive comments being made about me. I felt so at risk I left the gym and never went back. I feel so sad about it because I had just started to make friends and blend in. That night I decided that it was too far to travel in peak hour traffic on a motorcycle to get to class and that probably I wasn't able to make good decisions because of exhaustion which contributed to my mistake. I felt so mortified at what I had done and so sad at the way I handled or couldn't handle what had happened. Never told anyone this before.

I tore my LCL inexplicably as well. Same type of story as Chewy's knee, it felt just a bit off for a while, then when I was rolling chill it tore. Neither me nor my partner were doing anything crazy and there was no twisting motion on my knee. Things just happen.

Injured my foot while rolling with a blackbelt. Dude was only a kid and he felt so bad for injuring me that he was beating him up. And i told him to go out there and keep rolling. And he wouldn’t do it. Then I told him he was pissing me off and I’m a grown man, now go roll. He finally got the message 😂. And then when I had some time to heal, he was the first person I rolled with so he knew I still trusted him with my safety.

I’ve noticed people in general need to slow down and stop treating every roll like the pan ams There’s a time & a place for speed & intensity and those times are few and far between- tournament or fight prep- certainly not open mat or nightly class rolls. My case I torn a meniscus probably snowboarding, and then it got worse when rolling. It hurt when I was kneeling low. Did a MRI to confirm, then surgery. Now I train again. My case, the torn part was starting to damage the cartilage, I was told that if it was left uncheck and make some major damage, I would need a knee replacement (and that's one of the most serious surgery you can have). The most important thing for the knees is strength training to build muscles and stabilize it. After the surgery I was training on a stationary bike for about 5 months to regain strenght (in the end I could train on maximum load with no pain). Then I got back to BJJ, training 3 months so far.

I'm a white belt, an Couple of months back, I starting doing a transition from mount into half guard to do a sweep I learned at an Ellis younger seminar, an my training partner at the time, they had their hand on the mat as I started turning and I ended up snapping their middle finger all the way up... I felt so bad but she took it with good cheer an felt no blame for me (Jokingly she pointed out I ended up getting her a summer holiday from work as she recovered from surgery.)
