My subscribers have been asking me to post this entire film. The original documentary was primetime PBS and the Blue Ribbon award winner at the American Film Festival. What is posted here is most of it. Double Dutch was and is a wonderful sport and the teenagers who I filmed were so passionate about it and so proud. And their families were involved. It all gave me the opportunity to make this beautiful film. The winners of this competition came from the inner-city, Hartford Connecticut. They had tough times. But their faith and innocent excitement as expressed in this documentary, was a joy to behold.

I remember this. Those girls had so much drive. This stuff built community, it built Morales, IT BUILT PRIDE AND TEAM WORK. Now all kids do it look at a computer screen. I long for the old days.

I respect your opinion and i understand. Kids nowadays don't just look at the comouter screens for no reason. Online games for example, they build pride and teamwork too, it's not always bad. It's just different times and different ways, mostly easier ways. There are still many, so many who do sports and all that.

I hear you, but there are still double-dutch circles, and other great things, like dance teams and drum corps, which also build community and teach great skills. We do need to keep this stuff alive, because it's the stuff of humanity!

This was a huge sport for young inner-city girls in the 80's. Heck, it was big in Ecuador in South America back then when I lived there. It's a shame we can't get back to this kind of commitment by our young ladies again to such a fun and difficult sport. Young kids need stuff like this again instead of cell-phones and bad attitudes. Anybody up for some Break-Dancing?

Thank you for sharing this film. These girls, Black Magic, were so talented and delightful to watch. Much respect to the women who worked with them as well. They reminded me of the caring and capable teachers I had in elementary school. As a child in the 60s, I Double Dutch jump roped for fun, not competition. I wish kids today could have these kind of experiences instead of phones and computer screens. Was there any follow up with the competition after this film in following year(s)? Again, thank you David.🤗

Used to do this years ago on the street where l lived. We'd use two ropes n there was a rhyme we used to say. "Cinderella dressed in yella went upstairs to kiss her fella". There's a couple more lines, which l can't remember but at the last line we had to count up to 20 n skip really fast, (nothing like these ladies tho) then jump out n someone else jumped in. This is a lovely memory of innocent times which l'd forgotten. Thank you for bringing it to my mind. ❤️

I had forgotten that rhyme until I read your comment! In school, the version we would sing is this one: "Cinderella dressed in yella, went upstairs to kiss her fella" "Made a mistake and kissed a snake" "How many doctors did it take? One, two, three.. etc." and then make the rope faster after each number. :) Thank you for the memory jog.

Sorry if this one offends anyone but I was 12 in 2000 and we said "12x12 is 144 when the bed breaks down you can do it on the floor let me see your pop ups, your mambo, your one foot, your turn around...." something like that. And we did all those moves and we all knew each others speeds. I wasnt the fastest but just accomplishing those moves was enough for me. I joke with my kids I cant wait til theyre old enough we will play together.

Double Dutch is tough. My sisters and their friend would do it and it was the eighties so jump rope was an actual class in gym. I’ve tried both positions and I think the rope swingers have the tougher of the two jobs. I could jump as a kid but not swing. I was always messing it up.

David, is there any chance at all of you catching up with some of these amazing girls-now-women in order to learn where they went and how Double Dutch affected their lives in the long run?
