DISCLAIMER: YES, I KNOW ABOUT THE MUSIC!!! It was a mistake as my first product review, unfortunately I dont have the original audio file so I cant swap it out on KZfaq. So thanks for all of the feedback and now I know for my next review,. And NO MORE COMMENTS ABOUT THE AUDIO!!!
This is a (slight) comparison between the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera vs Blackmagic Micro Cinema Camera. It is geared more towards the Micro camera as it is the newer one of the bunch and there arent many reviews on it yet.
Just my first impressions.
This is my first video and I plan on making many more. Please message me if anybody has any requests.
Will be doing more comparisons in terms of video quality.

1) There is no point in whining about plastic - BMMCC was designed as action camera and is targeted for drones. Every gram counts. 2) Can BMMCC give a clear picture (no OSD)?

I recently purchased a (new) BMMCC and it came with some plastic material stuck in one of the vents, and the outer casing flange of one of the vents, not correctly seated under the metal housing! Whoa! Who was asleep when they assembled that? And where was it assembled in someone's lounge room instead of a clean room? I also found out that the NOVOFLEX MFT adapter also will not fit into a BMMCC, same deal as you demonstrate for the MFT speedbooster. Thanks for posting!

@NYVideoGuy
@NYVideoGuy 8 жыл бұрын
I havent tried RAW yet and its not something I used as often as I thought I would. Prores HQ still retains a great amount of data in each clip and is far mor convenient. I will do a RAW test though. Hopefully this weekend. 60fps was the only reason I bought the camera, but be aware that it doesnt do 60fps raw. but like I said, prores hq is damn good
@MylinealFilms
@MylinealFilms 8 жыл бұрын
Oh wow! no raw 60fps. That is definitely disappointing especially since they scrapped the global shutter also, but either way 13 stops of dynamic range and true 4:2:2 at 10bits recording is still a huge step up from a canon dslr so i will probably still end up buying this camera. Thanks again for the info!
@NYVideoGuy

+Millz a little bit of an update. I just check and it does NOT have RAW 60fps, however it has RAW 3:1 at 60fps. I am not too familiar with RAW 3:1 because my other pockets and cinema camera dont have it, but from the impression im getting is that it is compressed raw. I dont know too much about it so I could be wrong but Ill continue to look it up

I had the A6300 but this looks like it might be worth it for video, and for the battery you can always use a LP-E6 adapter that has the DC out and then plug it into the battery itself while using it no? kinda like what you'd do to get more juice from the canon cameras using an external anton bauer type battery. Can't wait for the next video!

@NYVideoGuy

+Łukasz K Hey, it has the pins in the micro four thirds mount and I believe you can change the iris in camera. I havent tried it yes, but ide assume it functions with the forward and back buttons. I am going to run some more tests this weekend. And yes, my monitor is only 30 fps, so I dont see why not
@FoldingIdeas

Hey John, Thanks for putting this review together. I'm just now getting my hands on this camera and I can't figure out how to control the ISO and aperture. Is that even possible? I can only control the aperture with a cinema lens that has an aperture ring. And I can't figure anything out for ISO. Am I supposed to use "Gain" in place of ISO? Thanks! Bray
@NYVideoGuy
@NYVideoGuy 7 жыл бұрын
ISO should be in the first menu section, they run in increments of 200, 400, 800 and 1600 so look for one of those numbers. Mine says ISO. I honestly cant answer the aperature question since I have only used lenses wit speedboosters. Sorry about that :( Hope you find it and share how you did if your able to!!!
@brayaddison6265
@brayaddison6265 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks, John. I have the Micro Studio Camera 4k, so maybe my version is a little different. The only thing I have similar to ISO is "Gain," but it's much less flexible with only four settings (0db, +6db, +12db, and +18db). No luck on in-camera aperture yet. I'll keep you posted if I start to figure things out.

You didn't mention the most useful part of this camera which are the remote possibilities for drone usage. This is the only camera of this kind which let you use a relatively small gimbal. You do not care about button sizes or back screen when using it on a drone as it is far away from your eyes. This is a fantastic camera for flying drones. Anybody using flying drone can connect power to the associated DB15 pins. Which pins? Well the provided bundle gives you an example and you don't fly with this bundle anyway..

@NYVideoGuy

Its most likely your computer. It may not be powerful enough to play raw or prores at full quality. Try exporting it and see if you can play it smooth at 1080. Or even upload it to KZfaq and check that way.
@llongmire
@llongmire 7 жыл бұрын
Man, you're probably right. When I drag the clip onto my desktop is says "cant support". So I'm guessing it is the computer which really sucks. Is there another way to upload it to youtube since my computer won't support it? The clip shows up in Davinci Resolve fine. Just plays terrible in it. Sorry I know that's a dumb question but I'm really not wanting to go buy a super expensive computer at the moment.

John, I noticed some kind of weird pixelation on several youtube videos shot with the bmmcc and was hesitant to buy it. It seems to be most apparent on skin but also noticed it on trees and bushes. Later, I rented a bmmcc from borrow lenses for a wedding and sure enough I got similar results. Pixelation on some clips but other clips were fine. What's the difference between Pocket speedboaster and MFT speedboaster and do both of them work on Micro Cinema Camera?
@NYVideoGuy
@NYVideoGuy 8 жыл бұрын
pocket cinema one is specific to the micro and the pocket. the lens sits back further and closer to the sensor. The micro four thirds is a little bit more flat and designed for cameras such as the gh4. Sitting a specific distance away from the sensor. you can see in the video that the pocket cinema camera speed booster works on both but for some reason the kicro four thirds only fits on the pocket. I really dont know why that is, they are both micro four thirds mounts

1- What are the different between 60 fps and 30 fps? and I know that there is the new B.M 4k but they are quite expensive. Here is the deal I have $2k but i want to shoot short films with very good quality but at the same time i don't want to spend all the money just on camera, so i need your advice. I still have to buy editing pro and stuff for the camera.
@NYVideoGuy
@NYVideoGuy 8 жыл бұрын
For under $2k ide go with the pocket cinema just for the simple fact that it has a monitor built in (even though it's not that good). Any one of the black magics are a big investment, they're so cheap because they sell you great video quality, all the other components of the cameras are useless. Ebay is your friend here, you can probably get one for $600 just the camera. 60 fps enables you to do slow motion. if you put it in a 24fps timeline, you can slow it down to 40%. Personally, I use that a lot. I also like the colors on the micro a little better though. keep in mind that you'll need to invest in lenses (I would suggest canon or nikon) never micro four thirds in my opinion and a speed booster is a must. If your going to be doing audio too than that's another game changer. I don't even think the audio is usable when outputting to any of the blackmagics

@NYVideoGuy
@NYVideoGuy 8 жыл бұрын
+Je As if your on a budget you do NOT want the micro 4k. it doesnt have an internal recorder (sd slot) Youll have to but a blackmagic video assist ($495 for the 1080p version) or an atmos 4k recorder (well over $495). The sigma 18-35mm 1.8g is my favorite lens, you can most likely get it for around $600 on ebay or craigslist.

All of the official Black Magic announcement videos for this camera stated that it would have a solid aluminum body. Were you mistaken about the body being plastic, or did Blackmagic lie to us and cheapen the body upon release? They definitely said it was going to be ALL metal.

+Steve Ritchie ok so I just re-examined it and the front is definitely aluminum, the back... its hard to tell, its very soft, but KIND OF feels like aluminum, or plastic. I really cant tell. Either really hard plastic of really soft aluminum. And the sides are another different texture and again I cant really tell. Maybe it is all aluminum and I'm just a dope, but personally I thought it felt really cheap thats why I thought it was plastic before taking a closer look

+John J. Sheridan Thanks for the excellent review of this camera - you are the first one to show the menu and button system, and how to change settings. Thanks for this!

+Steve Ritchie you got it!!! I have a lot of cool stuff but ive never done reviews or tutorials, want to start on my free time. I am working on a 60fps test video as we speak and a comparison against the GH4

Great video review John! We agree the button placement is a major flaw. Thankfully, we came across this awesome wireless remote design by Philip Lemon! Check out his kickstarter: www.kickstarter.com/projects/1294602089/blackmagic-micro-cinema-camera-remote/

You're comparing a professional camera to a consumer camera.

READY, SET, WOAH not really. Black magic micro is at $995 that’s a consumer price range not professional price range. GH5 is at $2000. They are both good cameras. But I even prefer the GH5. You can definitely get the cinema film look from a GH5.

Almatik Price range is irrelevant. The BMMCC is a professional tool meant for professionals. Hence why it needs so much accessories - just like any other cinema camera. Panasonic even states on its website that the GH5 is a consumer camera. Everyday you see people asking “should I get the Sony A6300 or the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera”. Like they’re even slightly comparable. ಠ_ಠ
