They grew up with the reality that if you want something or if you need something you do not even have to leave your house, it is brought to your door. It‘s not that long ago that if something broke or was needed you had to make it yourself or if you were lucky to have a blacksmith within a days travel and were „rich“ enough to pay him, you could have it custom made for you! Keep the good videos coming to educate our offspring!

Getting an actual lathe may be a thing put off due to cost ... but if you like DIY stuff, you can make a spring/pull lathe fairly easily, loads of videos on that on youtube (just follow along), technique does look a bit different due to the drive mechanism, but the end results are pretty much the same. And a spring/pull lathe can be build for a fraction of the cost.

No,I am thinking that a axe is to rough and a saw also. Making a tree look nice and not cutting a tree down. Like bonsai but than a bigger tree. I want to know how to make that chisel not how to cut the branches.

I'm not sure why this important to you? The blacksmith has always strived to do hard work easier either by altering the method or using tools of some kind. And the big difference back then was that the smith almost never worked alone. There were always manpower at hand who could swing a sledge. That's why power hammers are so valuable today when you need 4 hands... Torbjörn Åhman Thanks for the reply. I do realise that we all, in no matter which industry we work, want to make things easier. Many years ago when dinosaurs ruled I did repairs to old gates and railings obviously made when there were no electric welders and electrical power tools and I marveled at the workmanship put into them and the expertise the people who made them must have had to do it. The repairs never did seem to blend in and needed copious layers of paint to hide our hideous efforts. It was just an idea, and I thought that you might be the man up for some retro / vintage forging to entertain and enlighten this fan. I'll settle for your suggested posts. Thanks anyway.

Torbjörn Åhman It's not even that Sir, I just imagine something as simple as a pair of scissors that someone made prior to electricity. We take too much for granted, whereas our forebears put so much more importance on what we now consider simple items as they probably cost a fortune to buy before mass production and had to be looked after. I suppose that was what I was after, for you to show folk just how much work an ancient smith had to do to service the ironwork needs of his community. Do you ever wonder what the first iron worker used as a hammer? ;-)

:) Yes we take much for granted, for sure. It would have been cool to show the entire process from bog ore to final "something" , with every tool in the chain. Making fuel... building forge... finding the right first stone to use as a hammer... etc...
