Blacksmithing - Forging a pickaxe

In this video I show how I approach the challenge to forge a pickaxe. A pretty simple form, but quite heavy work still. Forming the eye is the crucial part. There must however be something wrong with the minecraft recipe... I found it only took two iron ingots and one stick to make it. How utterly strange :)

Again another "Thunderbear" master piece. Finally a blacksmith / knife maker on KZfaq who shapes handle like this with simple woodworking tools (knife, drawknife, rasp and a little sandpaper) by hand. And not using the belt sander and create a full room of wood dust followed by extensive cleaning. Producing shavings is nicer than making dust. Two thumbs up.

So awesome to see you forge out a pickaxe! I was thinking about the level of craftmanship needed to make a tool that will last generations when the usage is extremely brutal! I still use one that my great grandfather made many many years ago. It's a tool that should last generations if made correctly. My grandfather used the same pickaxe I use today when he dug out the area where he built his house over 60 years ago.
