Well this probably takes place after persona 4, by that time he is already all about the "strength of your bonds" and has completely opened up.

Canonically speaking, this would take place after P4, P4A, P4AU, P4D, and P4G's golden ending, as in the p4a story, he mentions that hed gone back to his original school. If you factor in Yu in PQ and P4tA where he directly mentions his strength comes from the investigation team, and his shadow was him not being able to be alone, it makes sense why hes grown so passionate.

My guess is the voice director. I'm fairly certain he's on a last name basis with them in Japan. The ATLUS localization team probably sees that being silly in English due to the cultural differences, but whoever's in charge here just did a straight localization.

They mentioned on an Arc Live that the localizers came into the issue that the Persona characters use honorifics with everyone in the game like Ragna-san and Jin-san so they could either completely ignore that aspect of their dialogue or just have the Persona characters speak to each other like they do in Japanese. In the end they decided to keep it as close as possible to the original Japanese. It also probably has to do with ArcSysUS doing the dubbing for this game as opposed to Atlus

Gehrman If you want to play persona I suggest you start from persona 3 fes then go to persona 4 golden, yu is the mc in persona 4, persona 4 golden is for the vita so I suggest you buy a ps tv they’re cheap, and then after you play those two, play persona q it’s optional tho, then persona 4 arena ultimax, however there is a normal persona 4 arena, and they both have a different story, but in persona 4 ultimax there is a dlc which recaps everything that happened in the normal persona 4 arena, then play persona 5, hope i helped.

Fun fact, in a sheet of concept art showing all the different designs that were thought of for Hyde, the last one showed him holding Insulator in one hand and a sheath in the other. I guess that sheath was removed from the final product.

I'll explain this. In the Japanese version of Persona games, the team generally refer to each other by last names. Yu bonds the more most with Yosuke, so they go on a first name basic (that's seen in the Persona 4 the Animation).

Epsy Blue From the interaction, I kind of like a social link for es where she tries to learn about Persona and Yu's wildcard ability. And in turn, Yu teaches her how to live like others and she becomes more human. A milked trope, yes, but thats just something I feel Yu would do for Es.

Zeldrio I think Es goes through something like that in Xblaze. But yeah that sounds about right. I don't even know if that's the same Es any way. It sounds like a social link like that would be represented by the Aeon arcana.

He and the P4 crew calling each other by their last names in English is what's off. It reeks of a translator just doing a literal translation without checking what previous P4 translations did.

No it's just how Persona is. Persona's dialogue always made use of the Japanese honourifics so it's only reasonable that it would continue here.

They don't refer to each other by last names in the English dub. It's Chie-san and Yosuke-kun, not Satonaka-san and Hanamura-kun in the dubs of other P4 stuff.

There have been a few times where they call each other by their last names. Chie usually does it to Yosuke to tease him and Yu does it when he's not being personal or when he's being polite.
