Just installing the rough country lift on my zj. The front has gone very smooth so far. You can keep driving it if needed and do it one piece at a time. Springs and track bar, trans mount, then do all the control arms last. Worked really well. The back looks more involved. That's next.

LOL "we have to re-use the hardware so be careful" then proceeds to hammer on the bolts. Good stuff Matt. Replacing my control arm bushings is the hardest thing I have done on my Jeep. The rubber had become fused with the metal and not only was the C-clamp press from the auto store not able to work in any combo of arrangements but it was so fused that the rubber came out in pieces. Finally a torch melted out the rubber chunks but left liquid rubber to be cleaned up. It was a learning process to say the least.

Sam Sam a drill works wonders. Use a 3/16 or a little bigger then drill in between rubber and the jacket then let your drill "walk" itself around the bushing eventually after several passes it will work itself out. I fought for hours with my xj before my dad came over and laughed at me saying watch this.

I have the 4.5" short arm kit from RC on my XJ, and it's been pretty good for a couple years now, but i eventually want to upgrade to a long arm kit. The one thing i don't like about RC's long arm kit is that theres only 2 points of contact holding the axle to the frame instead of 4. It just sounds like a weak setup to me. Whats your opinion?

when you are adjusting your upper links pinion angle is only one thing to consider. you still need to have proper caster. The more caster you take out the less stable the vehicle will be at speed. Add that to raising your vehicles center of gravity it could be dangerous on the highway.

On that bracket all you got to do is cut straight up the corners then bend the three sides until the weld failes, the sides real easy just two little tacks, the back has that weld the width of the frame may want to cut that from the front once each side is gone.

Great build and love all the advice and how-to's! Question though. Why did you chose Rough Country over the others? I'm currently researching the RC LA kit and wondered how it road and held up to the wheeling?
@christopherduby5330
@christopherduby5330 2 жыл бұрын
It rides really smoothe on road and off. The reason the long arms work 50 times better because it changes the Way your vehicle will come up over a bump in the road or the trail .. Using short arms your suspension and axle will literally bounce up in the air and the Jeep will sit still Is causing a weird feeling of a speed bump. The long arms eliminates this problem and changes the pitch of your arms back to factory almost do factories almost horizontal so you have more room for travel and better abilities abilities going over bumps. Your whole entire rig will come up over the bump and it feels like a smooth motion

I’ve put the same one on my 97xj but out wheeling I bent my passenger side. Ruff county did send a new one to me after I sent them numerous photos of different angles to prove I was not abusing it. Which I appreciate. But I was wondering is the a better option that is a bit stronger and more reliable

I really enjoy your videos. This will be my next upgrade because I'm sick of the short control arms and the poor performance that they give both on and off road. I believe your desired front pinion angle explanation is incorrect. The driveline angle is important, but the caster is also important and negative caster (upper control arms too long) causes "death wobble". You need some positive camber. There has to be a compromise and the steering is more important for obvious reasons- steering stability. The negative side of this is shortened u-joint life and some minor vibration at high-way speeds.

that's a way to get a vibe from your front driveshaft, pinion should not be straight on towards the transfer, rather the angle of the universal at the front of the transfer should be parallet with the angle at the pinion, dead flat joint at the transfer then dead flat at the pinion, 2* down at the transfer then 2* up at the pinion. Get it close otherwise it will rumble.
@bugsnstuff5643
@bugsnstuff5643 6 жыл бұрын
A drive shaft with a single joint on both ends needs to have the pinion angle parallel with output, like the rear drive shaft. A driveshaft with a double cardan joint or cv joint at the transfer case end needs to have the pinion angle straight with the shaft. The twin joints in a double cardan cancel out each others elliptical rotation. The front joint will add vibration if angled.

It looks like this kit is converting the factory 4-link to a radius-arm system. Which design works better for a lifted XJ? Is the rear mounting bracket of this kit even with the transfer case output so that the axle rotates around an arc centered at the transfer case u-joint? If so then it should eliminate any change in pinion angle as the suspension travels, correct?
