Oh my god, I didn't expect such a good tutorial video for a mere rock! I usually follow tutorials slightly and do things my own way because I already know some stuff on 3d modeling for other programs, so because I didn't like the tons of polygons I tried to do it with less subdivision and it looked awful. I then remembered the "decimate" modifier and tried to use it before the displace, which also looked bad. I later noticed exactly what you did and it looks much better. In the end I realised I should follow exactly what you do, and it's surely the best way to make cute low poly rocks. I also LOVE the multiple decimate advice. It 100% works better.

you can use two decimate modifiers, the first use the planar/planer?? option and set the angle tolerance to about 12 degrees. Apply it, then add another decimate modifier and adjust the slider according to you liking...

I'm not certain how he got the white edges in the final render. BUT, one method for achieving the white edges in the viewport is to do the following: 1. In the top right corner of the viewport, click the solid white circle to switch the Viewport Shading to Solid. 2. In the top right corner of the viewport, to the right of the Viewport Shading options, click the down arrow. 3. Turn "Cavity" on by ticking the check box, and to its right, change the Type to "Both". 4. Just below that, in the World Space and Screen Space settings, adjust the values by dragging them left and right until you achieve the desired look. Happy Blending!

I searched for any tutorial for this texture or similar and to help anyone who needs it almost a year after this comment and 2 years after the posting of the video, I thought I would share notes. I used the Geometry node and connected Pointiness to ColorRamp and then connected that to base color. But this method only works in Cycles. You will have to clamp the colors together and from there, mix it with whatever texture you have planned for your rock!

00:28 after scaling in object mode, you better apply the scale. Or instead scale in edit mode directly. Your bevels and displace will work properly. At the end, removing the edges this way create N-gons, wich is very bad in most cases. But thanks for the procedural geometry displacement trick reminder!
@rkpixeldesign
@rkpixeldesign 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah totally forgot about that, yes you should apply transforms for displace to work properly.

So amazing, THANKS, in the displacement modifier, if you set the coordinates to global, every time you move the mesh, the rock takes shape in the same procedural way, or if you prefer, you can change the type of coordinates to object, and every time you move this same object used as a coordinate in the displacement modifier, the rock randomly takes shape, that's before you apply the modifier, it worked with me.
