Thank you for this! The timing of this video is saintly! I made a part the other day for my 3D printer and my booleans were causing all sorts of unpredictable chaos. I ultimately ended up having to carve a block into shape with a crap-tonn of extra 2D objects. It took quite a while. This should be the fix I need for the rest of my project.
@dekutree643 жыл бұрын
Excellent! I generally do low-poly modelling and use a lot of booleans, and it's always a pain cleaning up the geometry after unions due to shifting things to avoid the coplanar problem. Just selecting and dissolving a few edges is a lot less work than having to add edges and then collapse them and then correct the vertex positions. And scaling things up for difference never bothered me, so I don't mind if that hasn't changed. Now if they'll just increase the floating point precision so you don't randomly end up with vertex positions off by a few nanometers, which can cause problems for 3D printing when you want the width of something to be an exact multiple of the nozzle diameter.
@dekutree643 жыл бұрын
I just tried it out and it works beautifully. Run limited dissolve to get rid of the excess edges. Sometimes need degenerate dissolve too. I tried a particularly difficult model (GT2 toothed pulley, duplicated, rotated 180 degrees around X, and unioned), which did create some bad polygons at the seam unless the two models were overlapped (even .001mm was enough, though). And then it had to be triangulated before running degenerate dissolve and limited dissolve, or else it created some bad connections between vertices. But it did work, which is very impressive. And it works perfectly with limited dissolve alone, using the same model mirrored on Z rather than rotated 180 around X. So vertices that are extremely close but not exact seem to be what give it the most trouble.

@sebastianzander873 жыл бұрын
Regarding the difference Boolean, it doesn't matter how good the "system" or the underlying logic is. Blender, like any other 3D software, is subject to floating point rounding errors. In the case of your example with the two cubes, even for slightly different locations (or viewing angles even!) in (x,y) there appear rounding errors in (z) which cause one face to be slightly below the other and cross a certain threshold. If you think about it, it is only "slightly below" which causes problems since its a difference Boolean. So if you want to cut out something you should always scale it up a little bit on the respective axis.
