Blinken: U.S. won't back Rafah incursion without credible plan for civilian protection

Following President Biden's confirmation that the U.S. will not send weapons to Israel if there is an invasion of Rafah, Secretary of State Antony Blinken confirmed on "Face the Nation" that the U.S. "will not support" Israel if there is a "major military operation" in Rafah in the "absence of a credible plan to protect civilians."

Mr. Secretary, many of us have witnessed via Utube Israeli soldiers shooting at young, unarmed Palestinian men as they were running toward one recently arrived humanitarian truck in Gaza. These two Israeli soldiers were situated on a very elevated covered platform while shooting at the running, unarmed Palestinian youths. The Palestinian death count now must surely exceed 34,000 since October 8 and continuing. The October 7 death count was 1,200. Where is the proportionality here? There had been reports that the 1,200 October 7 deaths were in large part committed by Israeli soldiers judging from the type and extent of damages as evident from damaged buildings in the kibbutz, surrounding vehicles and those vehicles driving away from the kibbutz. There, too, were helicopters flying above with shots coming from them. (These could not have been flown by Hamas.) There were two surviving witnesses from that October 7 tragedy. One of them recounted what took place. The other was a pregnant woman who fled in a taxi to a hospital where she gave birth. The baby did not survive. The mother did. The United Nations wanted to perform its own independent investigation, but the Israeli government refused that request.

Israel has made many concessions giving up the strategic and tactical advantages repeatedly to try to minimize civilian risk. If it was your family and friends being held hostage would you exercise the same restraint? I fully agree for the average non Hamas Palestinians this war sucks. 100% agree. But that said how do you defeat Hamas or at the minimum get back the hostages and prevent future hostage taking?

They also rejected the ceasefire they proposed when Hamas accepted it, deliberately bombed a bunch of other civlilian infrastructure of no military importance like universities, and have had far fewer casualties than the Palestinian side.
