Judging:
Minor deductions of -5 points are small things like the piece goes flying a short distance, little things.
Medium deductions of -10 points are things like the piece goes flying a large distance, the cut was late, a small mountain was cut, the cut sprays debris
Large deductions of -15 points were for large mountaints, the cut was a poor angle (eg. a "undercut" came very horizontal), scalloping the cut, measuring up before the mat, breaking stance, the wrong cut, large step before the cut, etc.
A small penalty of -30 points is if the cut was missed completely, measuring up before the cut, the cut wasn't completed
A large penalty of -40 points for hitting the stand, hitting the floor, cutting over the lead leg, etc. Anything that demonstrates poor control of the weapon.
For the linen cut:
Basic true edge decending cut: 1 point
Basic Ascending/Middle cut: 2 points
A false edge, or complex true edge cut: 3 points
A plunging style false edge cut: 4 points

Man... I feel bad for Erik. Stuff like that happens to all of us and it really doesn't feel good when it's happening to you :/

Yeah, it definitely sucks. But you're right that it happens to all of us, nothing you can really do but just shrug with a "I've been there too man." I remember I didn't get out of top 8 in a large longsword tournament in Vegas because I literally just sat there with a brain fart as the other dude blasted my head. Funny enough, Erik beat that guy in the finals for me so it's all good ;)

In round 2 Lee is SHREDDING that mat. If he normally goes through these at this rate... that's 720 tatami mats per hour.

What makes it so hard? What would happen if a person who never touched a sword in his life, like me, tried it?
@TyLarson
@TyLarson 6 жыл бұрын
Cassian I am no expert but the thing that is hardest in my novice opinion is hitting with edge alignment along the plane or vector the sword is striking. A lot of the time when you strike it will scoop from poor edge alignment or as you can see some of the competitors failed to even cut into the tatami. If you're not careful then you can get a kind of roll effect in which the blade rather than biting in hits and turns so the edge doesn't go deep. I don't know all the terminology and I'm a rank beginner so I am probably not explaining it right or clearly but I hope that helps.

It might be interesting to have an event in which the cutter must first parry a gently tossed fabric-covered (for safety) stick of rattan and then immediately perform a cut on a tatami. This could provide an interesting analog to a reactive or counter cut in combat.

I really like the idea, but getting a constant and fair throw each time would be difficult.

+Reese Pollock Yes, I thought that, too. But then, if was _too_ consistent, then it could very well be be too predictable. I suppose that's what the judges would be for.

Could easily have it hanging from a pole on a string or some such. That way, it can be held in the same position every time, and the competitor must execute the cut before the stick swings back and hits them. If they hit/cut the string instead of the soft target my mistake, then it's scored as a missed cut.

Or cut thru tatami mat but with wooden stick two or three inches behind and stick has to stay untouched..

Round two, the continuous undercuts. looks like Lee is slicing on thin ice. This can give some dangerous situations. Hope they attach it better next time. Thanks for the upload!

There should be a round where the same sword is provided to all of the cutters. The same cuts are made in the same order. That would truly show off pure cutting abilities. No edge gained from a superior blade. (Pun intended)

I don't get the purpose of the linen cut. Two layers are way too thin to represent clothing from the period. Not to mention that the clothes were made from wool with linen lining most of the time.
@BloodandIronHEMA
@BloodandIronHEMA 6 жыл бұрын
Adding layers of linen to simulate cloth makes the cuts themselves considerably harder to complete, just like how cloth on a real target would. This reduces the margin for error substantially.

Erik is actually quite the good cutter. That day just wasn't his, but then again we were running tournaments for around 10 hours before we got to this event so that can get to anyone.
