This plastic flooring/tarp is a joke. Multiple times in this video it's apparent that the person cutting looses their footing or slips and their cut suffers accordingly.

I absolutely love that you give complete information on the competitors, especially the swords used. So often, those of us who are curious are left wondering about the equipment. Got to see two of my own swords being utilized which boosts confidence in their being purchased. Thank you so much for the video, the information, and your commentary. Please keep up the great work! Oh, and by the way, your first run on the moving target was incredible! Holy crap. You made it look effortless.

Editor here! I definitely wanted to include that kind of information in the video. To be perfectly honest, whenever I see a video with 50 million people asking "what sword is that" and the content creator replying "check the description" I shudder. I don't have time for that! On the screen it goes, that way I can just ignore people who ignore it and ask anyway ;)

For a combat art that focuses so heavily on footwork, that mat was really messing everything up for some of those chaps. Maybe they'd have been better off with some industrial matting that jigsawed together? **shrugs**

Nice video. I think this kind of cutting is more challenging, especially the moving tatami cutting, than the Japanese style, stationary, cutting event. Thanks for the upload.

They should also do one where the target charges in on you, instead of running away.

WOw. This looks insanely tiring. The way you move all the way throughout the first round is just amazing. Your feet don't stutter at all, unlike your competitors, who almost look clumsy in that competition. I know that this video is from 6 years back but for how long have you trained HEMA? I want to start training, already ordered my federschwert and I now how much the footwork is importand in order to execute proper strikes. I hope I learn more from your videos!

That moving cut is such a good idea. I don't think any Japanese disciplines practice it. It actually fosters very important skill with your cutting

Sean, what did you think of the principie? It looks like it cuts wonderfully.
@seanfranklin1591
@seanfranklin1591 7 жыл бұрын
The principe is an amazing cutter, too good in some ways. If someone just trains to cut through a tatami mat with a super sharp principe they can do quite a bit of bad cutting form and still be 'successful'. I generally make a point of not using it when cutting tatami, so I can work on my mechanics without using a sword that is helping me. Though the pitch and calibration of the sword sound swinging through the air is the nicest of any of the swords I have at my disposal for training.

Why don't y'all use scabbards when doing the cutting competitions, instead of needing these safety rituals like holding it in front of you point down? Is there a reason, or is it common to not have a scabbard?

That was great. Any suggestion on getting into cutting with a new beginner to the sword. Should I wait until I get better with the sword or do you recommend me going for it.
@seanfranklin1591
@seanfranklin1591 7 жыл бұрын
I recommend cutting as soon as: a) You can get an appropriate sword & set up, and b) You are confident enough to do it safely. A good (unfinished) basic guide to sharp sword safety: www.hemacutting.com/home/2016/6/15/sword-safety-guidelines

+ Sean Franklin - I'm a complete beginner myself, and I found that advice very encouraging. I haven't had time to get to either of my local(ish) HEMA schools, but since making my first sword, I've been doing some basic solo work to improve my coordination and conditioning - simple repetitive exercises to improve my forearm strength, and the 6 numbered cuts from British Military Sabre, mixed with the I.33 wards as my sword is a singlehanded arming sword and the hand forward fencing position is not really appropriate for it. I had started to experiment with cutting to better understand the ergonomics of the sword, and your comment has assuaged my slight fear that doing so at my current level of skill is not a complete waste of time. I haven't got anyone to assess my cutting experiments, but at least they may not be utterly pointless. And watching the slow-mo footage back is giving me some feedback. It's also great fun - which is nice!

Could you bring a zweihander/spadone/montante to CombatCon and similar cutting competitions?
@seanfranklin1591
@seanfranklin1591 7 жыл бұрын
Nope, longsword cutting competition. Though there is nothing stopping someone from running a cutting competition with bigger swords if they wanted to. From my point of view, aside from the fact that fewer people own and train with them, I would be much more fearful of the events damage deposit from people hitting the floor. :(
