"BLOODY HELL" - Sony a77 - Does it Suck?

Sony a77 review - it's a serious bit of kit, but is it seriously impressive? Because it has to be... It's going up against the likes of the Canon 7D and the Nikon D7000. Is Sony's latest and greatest SLT (don't cal it a DSLR, because technically it's not, no matter how much it looks exactly like one ;) ) up to the task of kicking a few "canikon" teeth in? Lets find out what the Sony Alpha SLT-A77 can do

A good practical (and entertaining) review. Glad to have stumbled on this. I've had my A-77 since December 2011 and glad with my choice. I felt even better though, when I watched your overview and positive endorsement of the product.

Thank you for taking the time to do this review. I'm trying out an a57 at the moment as a step-up from two Sony point-and-shoots (the HX20v and the HX200v), but feeling like a further step-up would be better and Sony Cyber Shot fan. You've convinced me!

Great review! I've been a Nikon shooter my whole life and after one low light shoot with the A77 I'm making the switch permanently. The iso capabilities on this thing are ridiculous compared to my D7000 and the image quality is the same if not better. Sony lenses are pretty pricey, but with the option to pick up cheap Minolta glass there's not really an argument against Sony for me.

Hi Blunty, quick question. Which settings did you use to shoot the video samples on this review? I ask this because I noticed when using auto focus the camera does not respect the Shutter settings I have chosen (1/100 for 50p). As soon as I turn it on the shutter goes in full auto mode. I mainly wan to use for landscaping shots and travel videos of indoor and outdoor architecture and nature like, so auto focus would've been nice for panning and tracking. Mostly using Sigma 10-20mm. Thanks

Thanks for the review. It was helpful, but I still have questions about video shot duration. My current alpha series will only record approximately 7 to 8 minutes continuous before it overheats. That is extremely inconvenient for someone trying to shoot Do you have any idea how long this camera will record HD video before overheating?

i was just wondering what lenses did you use for the photos? was it just the 16-50mm? and would you suggest buying this camera as a step up from the sony A550?

@MikeUptonWrites1 Problem addressed, not solved. The problem is that you have to buy such adapters to use something with a 'standard' hot-shoe in the camera, AT ALL, in the first place.

Hey Blunty, Does the A77 make any hissing or what sounds like a moving stream in the background when filming in a silent area? If it does, have you tried an external mic and did it solve the issue? I only ask because i am interested in moving up from my A55 which overheats and makes this horrible hiss sound in silent areas and an external Mic only made it worse. Thank you

How would you say the electronic viewfinder compares to the natural view in DSLRs? And do you get all the same things in the electronic viewfinder as on the swivelling screen? Focus peaking etc.

I found this video while doing some research on the A65, I am planning on getting one, I currently have a A33. This is the first video I seen for the A77 that showed some great looking video and pictures from the camera, thanks for posting!

I'm curious of the kitlens that comes with the A77. I mainly shot with prime lens but I do occasionally need a zoom lens. The zoom I have now is the SAL16105. I'm please with it but not satisfy by it. Is this lens image quality better then the SAL16105?

Hi Bunty, i just want to say that was a very thorough & entertaining review. It was very informative & hands on which i feel is important, so well done your brilliant at this you should be on TV ! I'm very seriously considering buying this camera, do you know the cheapest place that will sell it? Should i hold out till Christmas maybe Sony will discount it ?

Excellent review. I'm normally a Canon user, but recently bought an a37, particularly for its video capability. That too is an astounding little camera, especially for the silly price. Might be tempted to get one of these too, following your comments...

This camera looks insanely good! One question though; does it have any slowmotion modes when filming? I would love if it could film in, say, 200fps, with reduced resolution.

Blunty, thank you for the fun & understandable review of the Sony A77. Presently I have the Sony Alpha, which was Sony's first DSLR & I am looking to upgrade. I was thinking of a Canon or Nikon, however after watching your review has swayed me back to the Sony A77. Cheers mate & thanks.

Fantastic review! You're a very fair reviewer, kudos for that! I currently have a Sony A55, and I'm super happy with it, but I think you just convinced me that I need the A77. I've already got a hotshoe converter so I can use standard flashes, and it was like, a whole 6 dollars on Ebay! works like a charm! I am just dying to play with the movie mode, and the Peaking mode! You've totally sold me, my friend! :D keep up the excellent work! Cheers!

Dear Blunty, Can you disable the "live view" and just have a full-time evf just as you would on a canon dslr? if you can disable the "live view" can it still show the settings in the lcd screen? Can you make a video of this? I went to a local electronic store to find out about this unfortunately this is not available on stock or even on display. Thank you.

hey.. nice video.. am interested in a65... can you tell me is only 70% light going to sensor a issue?? does this somehow affects the picture quality or colour of pictures?? i mean red is less red and blue is less blue.. cose of 30% going waste....

Will you field test this camera taking dance shoots? I'm a photographer entering into the genre of dance photography and I'm looking for a camera that will be able to keep up with the fast movemnet of dance (especially Ballet or Gymnastics). This will be very helpful to me! Thank you.

@TheKRNG Nope... but then again if you need more than 12fps, but don't need full res, why not just go to video mode at that point.

I have a sony a100 (it's coming on 6 years it was my dad's, he passed it down a while ago) I do love it but I have been thinking about upgrading the body because I would love something that shoots faster. I was looking at the a77 but it's expensive and now I'm wondering if there's another body that would work well for less? Do you have any suggestions or do you think saving for the a77 is worth it? And this is an awesome review! It makes me really want a a77 but I'm still in the wondering stage

you should see the pentax menu system... its the reason i lost a lot of hair!!!... i have a question about the video footage, i been looking at a lot of footage captured by the a77 and it seems to have desaturaed colours in comparison to the eos 60d footage!! do you feel that the video footage of the a77 seems desaturated??

Good review Blunty! The A77 is an interesting camera with new tech for the future. How is the viewfinder in your eyes? I tried a Sony (A33) when buying my first DSLR some time ago but I couldn't use it as I kept on seeing the dreaded rainbow-effect in the electronic viewfinder. Also just five minutes with the camera gave me a temporary bruise on the upper side left index finger due to the grip putting too much weight on a small spot when I held it. Without the issues I could have gone Sony.

I do love the way you put the A77 across I have had it ever sense it come out and when I tell people I use a Sony they think i'm mad, But it's always great when I out preform them with there over priced Canons and Nikons. Lovely review thanks =) and excellently portrayed!!!

Awesome video, however I can hear a second soundtrack leaking through around 1:00, its hardly noticeable at all, but with my headset it is pretty clear. Just a heads up incase you forgot to delete the track or mute it completely. Cheers.

Thanks Bloody. I've gotten the photo bug a few yeas ago and was in a local Photography Shop and they were steering me towards this camera and I've decided to do some homework as I'm looking to buy the Canon 70d. I'm definitely buying this camera now, especially with the 16-50mm 2.8 lens you can't go wrong. Plus the shop quoted me at $1400 US for the two together which is just $200 more then what the 70d goes for and it has more fps at 12fps which is great for surfing.

You did a such a great job that I cried two times! First, when I saw awesome pictures and AF in video and second, when I saw the price. I like Sony, own one (a560). Sony AF is fastest of all Cameras and that, often, what we need - the moment. What lens did you use, when you were filming this video?
