The plaintiff says he left his car at the defendant’s shop for a state inspection, but the engine was blown when he went to pick it up. He’s suing for the cost of a new engine. The defendant says his employee heard a noise from the car when it was brought it, and it was leaking oil. He alleges it’s all a setup to get a new engine out of him.

I'm a mechanic who used to own my own shop. A customer had an Astro van that I diagnosed with leaky intake manifold gaskets (very common). Even though I recommended he fix it right away he waited almost a year to bring it in to get it fixed. He was going on vacation for 2 weeks and left it with me. The morning after he left it I started it and pulled it from the parking lot in front to the first bay in the shop, about 75 feet. It sounded and drove normally. I replaced the gaskets, cleaned the valley area under the intake during that process and then drained the terrible sludged up oil from the crankcase and replaced it and the oil filter with new stuff as well as the coolant. I went to start the engine to do a test drive and final check so it would be ready for his return in almost 2 weeks. The engine would not crank. I thought the battery was weak but it wouldn't crank with a jump start. I thought maybe the starter had just failed so I installed a new starter and still it would not crank. I then took a socket and long ratchet and put on the front crank bolt and tried to turn the engine. It was stuck. When the customer came back I told him what had happened. He initially blamed me. I offered to tear the engine down and find the cause and I was fully insured so if it was my fault insurance would cover it 100%. He agreed and I removed the engine and tore it down to find the bearings and cylinder walls were all scored up (ruined) from the antifreeze seeping into the crankcase for a year. The customer returned and inspected everything. He also admitted that he had researched antifreeze damage in the crankcase after leaving and he wasn't surprised and he no longer blamed me. I'm glad he was smart enough to find an answer without having to go to court.

It is a disservice to yourself to judge a book by its cover... You'll miss out on a lot of good people and maybe miss out on red flags of somebody being super crazy because they look normal

@@alyssahamlett I was saying the judge is the one judging a book by its cover. I wonder if the plaintiff was a well off business man in a suit, would she of been so quick to not believe him. I'm a mechanic by trade with over 30 years in the industry. If someone brings in a car with obvious damage I would immediately note it in the work order and to not do so is insanity and anyone who repairs vehicles knows this and that's why I'm suspicious of the mechanic. Now as far as myself, I'm sure that the plaintiff is the nicest sweetest man in the world and if he came to my door and asked to date my daughter, have babies and marry her. I would slam the door in his face, disservice or not. Kinda kidding maybe not.

Both come across as untrustworthy. Plaintiff did have a bad engine job done if motor breaks down after 4 days. But he cannot prove if it was defendant or himself who did it and had terrible paperwork. Defendant just is the type who fasttalks and specialist words, so that he may be sell extra services to people with little to normal knowledge about car mechanics.

But c'mon. There was no case to begin with. Are we supposed to believe this jerk paid almost $5000 of an engine to be put into a 20-year-old car? Not even a proper receipt. The fast talker had the car for a couple of hours. What did he do? Drag race it or something? Ridculous. One of the dumbest cases I've seen on this show.

Maybe he’s just an old school mechanic. There’s nothing he had to “fast talk” the plaintiff about. It was a cut and dry story . Maybe I missed something.

The plaintiff tried to sneak in that he got his engine rebuilt at "Star Motors". He totally lied bc he knew his story was weak even if it was true. Everything was contingent on the fact that his engine was recently rebuilt and who did it. He was gonna gloss over the fact that his friend isn't a real mechanic without a real shop...
