This week at Speedy's Garage we take a look at what happened to our Dodge Hellcat Challenger Go Man Go. It turns out the catastrophic failure at the track was pretty severe with a blown Hellcat engine. However, stay tuned because the blown Hellcat motor isn't for the reasons you might initially think 😎 We'll get in to what we chose as a replacement as well as a tear down and diagnosis of the Hellcat engine failure to find out what happened.

I paid 10,000 dollars for a little over 2,000hp engine ten years ago not one problem I make sure I take it to shop for updates and routine maintenance that's it

Of all the owners I see mod their Hellcats, you did it exactly the way I would have done it. You were meticulous in every stage and step. Most just jump in the car after a tune and trust everything is right and many have success for a long time. You are one of the few who data logs everything and studies all parameters and yet something like this happens. Sorry to see this happened but still excited to see what you decide to do moving forward. Good luck!

I really appreciate your attitude and bringing us all along with you. Tuition is pretty steep with racing, and breaking stuff is a part of it like you say. I am a lot like you with establishing a “racing fund”, as I started that on the same day I bought my car because I just knew that slinging parts day will come for me, too. Looking forward to what direction you decided to take, and more importantly what you learned. Thanks again!

Gawdangit sorry to hear it... my HellKitty is in the shop now too. I bought it used with 8thousand miles. I've put on 3thousand. 2wks ago at the track it bent a rod. Turns out the car is a "flood car" and the engine had hydro-locked in the past. Of course the dealer that sold me the car is denying it. Long story short I'm investing 17g into it and with any luck I should be making 1300 @ the rear. I'll done by the end of the month with it and back on the track.

As meticulous as you are about everything, and as tough as the Hellcat motor is said to be, this is really a surprise. Especially with all the yahoos out there modding their Hellcats, with no ill effects. It will be fun to watch the new build. Your videos have guided me on several mods to my Hellcats. Thanks!

I blew my engine in my 2016 Hellcat two month ago! I melted 3 of the 4 pistons on the driver side of the engin. We still don't have an answer to what went wrong. The cylinder walls didn't get just scored, they got gouged! So I had to buy a new short block from HHP. I was pushing 900 hp when the engine blew. When it's all said and done, I will have over $10,000 into getting my car back on the road! At this point I wish I would have just kept the damn thing stock!

You were, (pinching fingers together), *that* close.😵 The "forensic" tear down and data log analysis will be fascinating and worth far more in terms of knowledge & experience, than the monetary aspect of repair.🤔 Your dedication and resolve will carry the day to fixing this better than new, I'm sure! 😃

Ouch! Something sure did want to get out of that oil pan in a hurry! Whatever it was, didnt want to wait until you stopped! Damn little critter, wonder where he's at now? he must have been knocking on that oil pan pretty hard, or gnawing at it with his big ole teeth.

Your one calm guy. My experience with blown motors is that they run their best just before saying goodbye. Your approach is spot on Racing costs money. I’m interested in what’s next. This for sharing and good luck going forward. Procharger???

Got a racer buddy who calls the sport "slinging parts". Just part of the game... I highly recommend contacting Injected Engineering in Kennesaw, GA. They know Mopar...very well. Had a 1200hp Demon in front of the shop last time I was there...

I'm surprised there are not more Hellcats tossing rods, put a good set in there and not worry about it again my brothers Hellcat when had 60 Passes on it tossed a rod, WarlockExpress built him a 392CI short block using Manely 6.30 C to C rods and Manley Pistons, (1.12 Ph) , it's making 100 more Hp to the rear wheels now, 1st run of the on 93 was 9.90 @ Cecil county....Now it's cage time.

Do you know what RPM your brother was spinning his to when it failed? It's looking like a defective piston in mine.

@@SpeedysGarage it was #6 at ,about 6800 RPMs rod snapped just below the small end ,windowed the block,. Warranty took care of it, but he still had an engine built while it was at the dealership.

Hi Speedy...Bet you won't forget this vid but good thing came out of it! I appreciate you giving pertinent specs so I can figure out where I am and what I want to do after warranty is closer to ending. Do you actually need the race ramp extension or is it a belt and suspenders safety reason? Did I miss you lowering Go Man Go? Or is it the front tire size that you are using? Thanks FYI my 2020 factory stock Redeye weight is 280 lbs heavier. Wheels, tires, seats, and sub woofers will not make up that difference (I'll re-watch your weight reduction vid preparing for the track). When you put the new engine in did the weight increase?

My front splitter would rub without the race ramp extensions. I'm stock height.

Yeah mine did the same thing, 2.75 upper on 93, just think it was probably to aggressive on pump gas, it sucks, been through it, love your videos

Interesting. Did yours shoot a wrist pin like mine or burn up the plugs? I pulled plugs in cylinder 7 and 6 since they were easiest to reach and they looked fine so wasn't a lean condition or detonation. It's looking like a piston flat out failed and the wrist pin tore out.

Roger that. That is the more common failure, a bit too lean or a bit too much timing and there ya go. I run mine pretty fat at 11.3 - 11.5 AFR.

They seem to get unhappy above 850 wheel in some cases. Others are going to 1000 - 1100 no problem. Maybe a bad run of rods or something.

I spent all my money on the suspension and drive train on my Hellcat. Only put a CAI and catchcan for motor mods. Bet a rod failed on his. Will pin my motor when the warranty expires on the motor.

Doing some research it seems there are a handful that have had a similar issue and at least one Demon but the Demon was in the 8s so it was making a lot of steam.

Sorry man...I am just wondering? What was your RPMs shift points?

Shift points when it failed were 6500. Back last November I did have them set to 6700 for 4 passes at the track and the logs showed it hit 7100 a time or two at the 1-2 shift. That might have been enough to hurt the piston or rod? Lots of others go beyond that though.

So i know a guy who is aiming for low 900 whp on a stock engine in his hellcat e85. How long do you think his build will last?

That's getting to the limit of the stock motor in my opinion, but if tuned properly and good fuel always used it will last. I personally wouldn't go more than 850 - 900 on a stock engine.

FUCK ARRINGTON. Since they got bought out they haven't been the same they wont even update there website. They sold me a junk forged 392. Threw some plastic on it and slapped a downy sheet cardboard box cover on top of it. TRASH. Only good thing i got out of it was it was a BGE block. I sent it off to a real shop and had it stroked out.

I'm still not convinced it wasn't tune or fuel related, with a 2.72" pulley on pump gas that's way too much timing to be in the safe zone. I know you'll disagree, but most tuners won't do anything smaller than 2.85" on pump gas, probably for good reason :0.

Maybe, but people lean on these engines way harder than I did and seem to be doing fine. The new setup will run the same pulley on 93 though. On my 2016 it's only 1psi more than a 2.85. On 2018 and up seems a 2.85 makes 16-17psi, so it's not really the pulley size but the actual boost produced you need to be aware of.

It has to be tuned related. Even tho you had a different tune in the car when it did break with lower timing at that point the damage had already been done. You have a hole in oil pan and that dont happen to stock cars. Every blown Hellcat with a freaking hole in the engine it was tune related due to a bad tune or not adjusting for DA or just doing some dumb shit and you a smart guy so i know you dont do anything dumb with your car at all. The wifey didnt seem happy at all about it LOL my wife hates my Challenger i got a 448 Stroker built. Feel your pain on the lost for sure. Time for a 411 or 422 stroker.

It definitely wasn't tune. You'll see when we tear the engine down. Defective stock piston more likely. Mrs. Speedy is very understanding of my car habit lol.

@@SpeedysGarage well you cant scream defective stock piston when you been pushing the car well beyond what it was built to handle for a while now. At the end of the day its still a stock engine and it wasn't made to be pushed that hard on those stock internals so you cant say oh its a defective piston when you were running 15lbs of boost lol. Blowing a hole in the pan is just pushing the car beyond what engineered to do. Now once you build it and stroke it out you'll be solid. I'm sure OST hooking you up on a engine so i get why you cant point fingers. Looking forward to the new engine.

Maybe, but lots out there pushed WAY harder. OST shop cat is on 20 psi and nitrous with 7000 rpm shifts. Shrug.

Been there done that, I don't really wanna go that route again with a street car. New motor has been fine for 2 years and runs 9.70s so I'm good now I think (hope).

Always run good gas when racing period. You always here of these failures on shtty pump gas. If you want to run pump, get meth injection.

I'm not a fan of meth injection on a Hellcat but I 100% agree on putting good fuel in the car to race. I do run meth injection on my supercharged 4Runner though.
