I kind of did, because Mizu was keen to kill Hamata, but to avoid reprisals, she had to make it look like Kinuyo and Hamata mutually killed one another. Had she saved her, there would have been a search for her, which would have inevitably led to the brothel. Now, I haven’t seen ep 5, but I guess with the ratting out, Mizu is going to have to, in the words of Samuel L. Jackson, “kill every last m**** in the room.” Possibly some “Bride vs. the Crazy 88s” s**t.

I believe Taigen was ready to resign to the fact that he was either going to see Mizu in Autumn or never again. But then he got captured. Now he's there NOT of his own volition. The super cool thing about this show is that every lead character has a goal. Mizu - revenge. Taigen - rematch. Akemi - independence. Ringo - usefulness. And none of them really let anything detract them from said goals. It's awesome!

We are used to anti-heroes in much of literature. But Mizu has never claimed to be a hero. We thought maybe she'd help the starving mother & child get into the city; she did not. We thought maybe she'd save this deaf girl. She did not. She is not the hero of this story. It is her story, but she is not a hero of it. And that is FASCINATING. Her story is a story of revenge. Watching her journey has been a delight. This was the episode that told me "oh, she's not *that* kind of protagonist." And you are about to watch ep 5, which is my favorite episode. I can't wait.

Started watching you react to the Expanse and glad you're watching this show. I loved the themes in this episode, especially Mizu's emotional journey. Through the episode she doesn't hesitate to take innocent life in pursuit of her goal. First the bird with unhatched eggs, and finally the girl. The later really effected her, you can tell from the cracking of her voice and the way she was animated. It resolves with her telling the boy to fetch the guard, sparing his life. This act of mercy comes back to bite her in the ass. It brilliantly leads into EP 5 which as others have said is simply a work of art and one of the best episodes of TV I've seen in a while. Can't wait for that one lol

I think you missed the subtlety. Madam Kaji wasn't protecting her. Kinuyo got scared when Mizu signed that. And Mizu lied (or half thruthed) when she said "she understood" because it's done and Mizu needs her info. There's definitely a darker side to Kaji's relationship with the girl that she didn't tell Mizu.

Sublime sbow, and a joy to watch you fall in love with it. Kenneth was born in Belfast, so he's tapping into his native accent more than he normally would (I was surprised it was him too when I first realised). Onryo - was a word used in the first episode to describe Misu. Onryo is a type of ghost in Japanese traditional beliefs and literature. It is believed to be a vengeful spirit that can return to the world of the living to seek revenge. The writers did not back away from this. Misu is Figuratively an Onryo.

The cutting off fingers thing is a traditional way of showing regret/remorse/dedication in old Japanese culture. There was a Japanese American guy who got in drunk driving accident in Los Angeles where his passenger died and to show his remorse and dedication to never forgetting her memory, he cut off, I think two knuckles from a few fingers and presented it to the girls' parents. It's a semi-outdated ritual that has to be done in a certain way but is occasionally done especially within the Yakuza and possibly some old school traditionally conservative families. He also became sober and stopped living the lifestyle that led him down that initial path. Forgot his name. I'm pretty sure he went to Japan to have it done the traditional way.

Mizu isn't a good person, kinda the point. Revenge is not a noble thing and she is nobodies hero. The symbolism of Mizu killing the mother bird and laying its corpse in the nest amidst its now doomed eggs was heavy handed but likely intentionally so. Regardless of what made her that way, Mizu has become the monster everyone accuses her of being. And she knows it, it's why she doesn't want RIngo to follow her path. I am curious if the show will commit to this, or if this is a redemption arc being set up.
@troikas3353
@troikas3353 6 ай бұрын
@@jachyra9 Depicting the innocent creature she just killed on screen next to its babies that will now also die as a result of her actions somehow symbolizes that she's not doing monstrous things? That's certainly a take on it I guess. Especially when that is immediately followed up with Mizu murdering an innocent victim of abuse by first tricking her into thinking Mizu was there to protect and rescue her. Like this isn't even subtext at this point, it's just text. It's incredibly well made and written, but it's clearly showing how Mizu is headed down the wrong path. Revenge is an inherently selfish act and the revenge she is after will harm countless innocents in the path she takes to achieve it. Mizu knows this, she's accepted it and at this point in the show she fully believes she is willing to pay that cost in innocent lives and blood to get what she wants. Fowler being presented as such a cartoonishly evil villain does help Mizu's actions go down smoother for the audience, that's a pretty common and effective writing trick in revenge stories, but you aren't automatically the hero of a story just because you are fighting the villain.

18:40 he's probably killed so many *_things_* by now, that _killing_ anything is not even fun anymore, it's a chore. for men like Fowler, the only thing that interests them is _the completion of whatever they set themselves to do_ Fowler here, specifically, is like a perfect blend of spoiled British brat, and devoted Japanese philosopher.... you can't take either of them away from the thing they want the most, one by self-determination, the other by sheer whim. if one thing is dangerous to have on the way to adulthood, and the other to have *AS* an adult for the sole drive of self relevance, imagine both combined in all the wrong ways.... he WANTS to get his way, and he's GOING for it.

I have a theory. The deaf girl was not being abused by Hamata. She seemed unharmed and well cared for. Perhaps Mizu killing the bird that has unhatched eggs is a parallel; I think the girl is pregnant with Hamata's child, and the doctor visits are about that. Hamata seems far too angry for someone that he abuses being killed.

Mizu is not a protagonist, or a hero. She's obsessed with her mission and nothing will stand in her way. I think of Breaking Bad when Mike told Walt to not go for half measures. It never ends well, and it didn't for Mizu. You let the common tropes of TV sucker you into thinking that Mizu is going to rescue the girl, so when she actually follows through on her bargain, it comes as a huge shock. That's some masterful storytelling - when it's a surprise that a character does what they say they will do.

Even her mission is rooted in evil - there's no way that all 4 of the men she is trying to kill can be her father, so by completing her mission she would be absolutely killing (at least) 3 people innocent of the ...crime?...that she is going after them for.

Additionally, since this is Edo Japan, the cultural norms around killing and death are different. Technically Mizu's mission is honorable. It's why Swordfather agreed to let her train after she tells him. By all definitions he is a good and honorable man, so would not encourage her towards villainy. She toes the line between Anti-Hero and Villain imho.

It's definitely a grey area, which is why she's a great character. I would counter by saying she doesn't intend to "murder" them, but kill them. Additionally she describes them as opium dealers, flesh traders, gun sellers and in the country illegally. I may have missed when he admonished her. But may have to wait on that to avoid spoilers lol. I'm no expert either :)

Having consent is too often used as a catch-all for justifying bad behaviour. This is the problem i have with BDSM- it, by very essence & definition, is an act of sexuality that relies on exerting power & dominance over others. Whether someone gave you consent to exert power over them is irrelevant to the fact that getting off on exerting power over others is abhorrable shitty behaviour, when sex should be about mutual appreciation, pleasure & respect. Someone consenting to me deriving pleasure from their pain doesnt make me a less of an asshole for deriving pleasure from someone's pain and consent is used to cover this simple aspect of self responsibility.

Asking consent is mutual. It's mutual pleasure. It's a reciprocation. If you want to dominate, find someone who wants to be dominated. That dynamic in a brothel is questionable but I wouldn't know how that works exactly.

@@jachyra9 " what you find objectionable is not necesarily what anyone else finds objectionable" - this is a nothing statement, as its true for every single thing in the world - murder, rape, slavery, etc. So, its irrelevant to what is and should be objectionable or not. The dominant often does derive pleasure from dominating and in most cases, it is deriving pleasure from the act of dominance. To deny that, is to lie about the vast majority of those who are dominant in the bdsm culture. Consent isnt absolute and someone consenting for me to abusing them, doesnt release me from the fact that i am deriving pleasure from someone's abuse, which makes it immoral. As i said, too often, especially in modern western culture, consent is seen as releasing oneself from the morality of their actions- when it does not.

@@kapilavastuvasin If they're genuinely consenting, then it's not abuse. The point of power dynamics in BDSM isn't about wielding power over another, it's about the *appearance* of wielding power over another. Nobody involved actually has any power over anybody, anybody in the scene can end it at any time, for any reason. Yes, dominant partners derive pleasure from the act of dominance... but the whole point of the BDSM/kink scene is to allow that indulgence in a safe way that brings pleasure to *both* parties, since there are just as many who derive pleasure from being dominated.

@@anothervagabond It doesnt matter if you have consent. If you derive pleasure from exerting dominance on others or pain of others, you are a shitty human. The appearance is reality in terms of sexual context and if your sexuality relies on weilding power over others, its warped. There is a reason why there is everything under the sun in the kama sutra - from straight/gay/trans sex to seduction, orgies, masturbation - but no BDSM. My point is simple - your own actions and stimuli determines if your actions and urges are moral or immoral. Gaining consent for that, is irrelevant. If i derive sexual pleasure from beating up someone, its wrong. Doesn't matter if my victim says 'i fully consent you to orgasming while beating me up'.

Would you prefer streetwalker? Trollop? Hooker? It's their job, and every job has a name. The show goes to great lengths for historical accuracy (to the point where it's almost surprising that the entire show isn't subtitled in Japanese), and absolutely nobody used the term 'sex worker' then.
