I've been trying to figure out her DND challenge rating to figure out if I can throw her at my players just to see what they do and I feel like she's gotta be on the level of an ancient dragon, wouldn't put her anywhere below CR 20. Sometimes characters aren't meant to be player characters, but instead encounters.

Violet is, far as anyone can tell, the first of the four targets that Mizu killed (why she has one dot on her tattoo), so his line "For Violet" is a statement of revenge. I thought the flashback in episode two was her killing this person, but it seems that might be a vision of her "Japanese" self (she has brown eyes in the vision) killing her European self. But I love that "I'll teach you (how to be an honorable samurai)" at the end when she saves Taigen. So good. And that cover of For Whom the Bell Tolls? So good.

TVTropes has category for "The Determinator", it's someone who through sheer force of will overcomes crippling injuries or obstacles. Malcolm Reynolds is this at the end of Serenity fighting the Operative. Mizu is that here taking on the whole damn castle with an impaled ankle.

*[Not a spoiler]* Violet is one of the four Europeans in Japan. Mizu’s tattoo, the X with a spot, is a tally showing four objectives with one complete. There’s an early scene with no context (I think when she’s meditating in the cliffside forest in episode 2?) that shows Mizu sneak up on a woman and put her sword to her throat, and that’s her killing Violet.

On a semi related note, I hope you consider watching *_Violet Evergarden_* someday. Feels like your kind of show from what I’ve seen. It’s another short animated series exclusively on Netflix. It has a lot of overlapping themes with other shows you seem to like, including Blue Eye Samurai, Avatar, Arcane, The Last of Us, etc. I’m hesitant to go into more detail, as it’s easily spoiled, and I don’t want to do that if you ever do watch it. It’s not the most popular series, why exactly I don’t know, but I think you’d really like it. I don’t mention it without reason, and I don’t spam it but I have mentioned it a couple times over the year. I don’t know if you’ve ever seen those comments, but if you have and don’t want to just let me know and I won’t mention it again.

Yeah it's episode 2 just before the fangs attack her. And in that vision/memory it's a woman that looks exactly like a fully white version of Mizu herself. Makes me wonder if that was her mother and her father is Japanese. But it could also be symbolic, like she is killing her white half and that's not exactly what Violet looked like. I definitely think there is some kind of twist to be revealed about that first kill.

The episode 2 part is... Hypothetical. The woman greatly looks like Mizu, but the Mizu attacking has brown eyes. It looks more like a vision of her japanese self killing her european self, being a metaphor about her hatred about herself ( always comparing herself to a monster, and her eyes to shame ). I don't think it is about Violet at all.

Mizu reminds me of 2 other characters from your reactions I’ve watched - the Operative from Serenity and Silco from Arcane. Like the Operative, she knows and accepts that she’s not a good person. She’s going to create a better world, but it’s not for her. She says she’ll never be happy, only satisfied. She can’t be dissuaded from her mission by saying “revenge will make you a monster, this road won’t end well for you”. She knows and has accepted that (just like the Operative). Like Silco - her power is her willingness to do anything to achieve her goal. Silco said “power comes to those that are willing to do ANYTHING to take it”. He was almost unstoppable until he finally found that ONE thing he couldn’t do, and that was his downfall. Mizu is the same. She is willing to do anything for her revenge. Kill an innocent girl? Done. She’s not a hero. She has a mission and until/if she ever finds that line she can’t cross, she’s a force of nature.

I love how Heiji Shindo is so absolutely pants shittingly terrified of Mizu, like she's Batman or the Punisher or something. Props to the animation team for making the Acid Trip fight absolutely stunning.

I've studied combat, armed and unarmed, stretching across 40 years now. From a real-world viewpoint, this episode breaks the suspension of disbelief. But... I am also a storyteller. And we have literal mountains of epic poetry, folklore, tales, sagas, and operas where Mizu's performance in infiltrating this castle would be just another Tuesday. It is riveting, really, and I'm enjoying the ride.

Lol. We all know that it's not "realistic" and there was nothing wrong with your comment. You just said, "despite me knowing that this isn't possible, storywise it's amazing". Nothing wrong with saying that at all. And good job being the bigger person and letting it go. As for my own opinion, the show is at least way more realistic than I'm accustomed to, like the bullet breaking the sword. So I'm glad it's at least that good. Luckily it doesn't break the suspension for we that have not studied combat, at least not as much as I'm sure it does you. We all have our professions, like me and medicine, and then I'll watch CSI and they're like, "lab results show he was taking levothyroxine" and I'll go "so he had a thyroid problem? how does that make him the killer?". So it broke my suspension then too. It wasn't a flex, what you said, just context. Context and Flex are not the same.

The Madam telling Mizu to use a specific sign was so that the young lady would trust Mizu and not put up a fight, making her mission, and it WAS a mercy killing, that much easier to accomplish. The Madam knew what goes on in that place, and knew everything about the young lady's schedule. The sign had no other motive other than to make a complete stranger feel at ease with Mizu.

I agree that the Madam was telling the truth to Mizu, and honestly believed she was doing the kindest thing she could for Kinuyo based on her own knowledge of the situation. I don't think there was anything underhanded about this from the Madam's side--she seemed to love Kinuyo, and be genuinely grieved by her fate. BUT--the sticking point is Kinuyo's response. Who knows what Kinuyo's life in Hamata's captivity was like. Perhaps she was happier than expected, or perhaps she was miserable--all we can know is that when death came for her, she didn't want it. She did not have the ability to explain and we can only speculate at the reasons, but she DID understand Mizu's gesture and yet she shook her head no. Despite anything she may have agreed to before, in this moment Kinuyo didn't actually want to die, and Mizu knew it, and Mizu did it anyway.

On top of the amazing visuals, story and action one thing that i really love is how much of a Sith Mizu is. Channeling her anger and hatred into feats of strength and shrugging off the many many injuries she sustains. She is quite literally too angry to die.

I will point out that they chose the song titled For Whom the Bell Tolls. The bell tolls signifying death. But at the end, the literal bell tolls for Ringo coming in and rescuing them from the lake. It's a beautiful little detail.

I was born in 1971, and grew up with Metallica. I have now lived long enough to see their songs incorporated into two different mainstream television projects (this show and "Wednesday.") I'm not gonna lie, I'm not sure how to feel about that. I like how their songs were used in each case, but another part of me is like, "Holy shit, how old am I?"

I'm gonna slightly disagree with the assessment of showing her husband her sword skills. He had no idea what he was in for, but when he said, "Don't hold back", he said it with an excitement in his voice because he was actually having a great time with his wife, finally. Likewise, Mizu wasn't trying to upstage him for the sake of upstanding. She wanted a great sparring partner, and it just so happened to be her husband, who she was getting along with and actually starting to love. She was excited, and he did not think she was THAT good, so he was embarrassed, but I believe the intent was to have fun.

One thing I want to mention is Mizu is literally the Onryo. Think back on episode 5 - when the soldiers came to take her at Mikkio's farm (also in parallel told in the puppet show), she *becomes* the onryo and easily defeats them. Again, in parallel to her battle with the 1000 Claws army - she "powers up" and becomes the onryo and defeats the army - what, 50 people? She can also shrug off any damage (like a stab to what appears to be vital organs) and only collapses afterward.

My only issue with this episode was her having the strength to carry Taigen on her back while scaling the wall. I'm not saying that because she's a woman. I'd have a problem with it if it was the other way around.

Child with no hands not being murdered, no, he was protected by his family and became useful for them. Also, we haven't been informed on Ringo's back story as of yet.

One of the best things about this show is they actually have a good female lead. To many movies/series in recent years have gone with the female lead who is perfect because she's perfect and her journey is about everyone realizing how perfect she is. Makes for really boring protagonists. Flaws are relatable, we all have them, working to improve our shortcomings is something everyone can understand. Mizu, for all her incredible fighting skills is not a good person. She leaves Ringo ties up in a forest, possibly to die there, maims a bunch of students for not letting her see their master, let's Akemi be dragged off minutes after Akemi saved her life, kills a scared kid... just because I guess. Revenge is all she cares about, or at least it was until this episode, when she has finally reached Fowler, but chooses to forgo her revenge to save someone else instead. The writing for this show has been truly amazing, I really hope it carries on into the next season.

@TheoMurpse A lot of recent Marvel shows and movies, same with star wars. Disney live action remakes, indy 5. Really seems like Disney has been leading the way with this lately. Everything they acquire quickly becomes very female centric. And the only way They can conceive of writing strong female characters is to make them flawless, or close to it. While their male counterparts are dumbed down so they look better by comparison

If you think Rey and Helena Shaw were "close to flawless" you're just showing that you don't actually think women should be in the lead. They're no more flawless than their exact male counterparts, Luke and Indi. And that's just two of your examples that really makes no sense.

Also, Disney acquired marvel 10 years before end game, the only moment you could point to in that film that is "very female centric" is a one minute sequence that ends abruptly. And if 10 years after acquisition is "very quickly" I have serious doubts about the level of honesty of you claiming to like female protagonists, especially when you're claim of one of the best is a woman who spends about 90% of the show presenting to everyone that she's a man.

Saying "you'll love/hate episode [x]" is a spoiler. Just let people react to it organically and form their own opinions. Otherwise why watch react channels at all?

i loved the show but for me this episode was just too much the fighting was great but she would have to literally be super human to do some of the things she did specifically taigen on her back up a sheer cliff face. As far as they have portrayed her in other episodes she is capable of all the fighting but otherwise she is a normal strength woman. They could potentially carry a 220-250 pound male on back but no woman could while climbing up a wall like that especially after all the other levels. adrenaline will take you far but your muscles would still get exhausted also he is dead weight which is way harder.

@@jachyra9 true enough but Upholding suspension of disbelief is important for a show. A show should set it’s in universe rules in first couple episodes and stick with them the rest. if i see the hulk struggling to lift something on episode 1 then a reasonable progression is for him to lift that thing by the end not 10x that thing.

@@jachyra9 of course it is fiction i never said it wasn’t but if you were reading a fiction book say maybe a normal mystery novel you would be pissed off if all of a sudden aliens came down and shat all over the story even if it was just one page of the book it would stick out. Same with in fantasy. If in harry potter all of a sudden harry pulled a gun at hogwarts and started blasting that would break in universe rules that muggle devices don’t work at hogwarts. As far as i can tell the in universe rules for Blue eye samurai are they are normal people in japan she found a special space rock and made a super strong space sword and trained her ass off with it. nothing about the first episode suggested to me that she herself was 3-5x stronger than the average woman her size every feat she did in episodes 1-5 was with the special space sword. even cutting through that massive tree which is ridiculous unless you have a super shard super strong sword.

So I dont think this is a spoiler, but about Violet, mizu mentions in earlier episodes that there were 4 white men in japan when she was born and now there are three. Thats all the information the show gave so it is implied she killed one already but we dont actually know yet, I am assuming it will be a flashback at some point.
