Blue Note just announced their 2024 release calendar for the Classic Vinyl Series, and of course I had to talk about it. Here is a rundown followed by my top picks.

Lately, with the resurgence of the medium and more collectors coming to the space, the music industry has taken notice and prioritized putting out high quality reissues of some of the best albums ever recorded. That Thad Jones record is one I've wanted to add to my collection for a while. Great record for beginners looking to get into jazz too.

Great update! Huge that Duke Pearson’s “Wahoo” is being pressed, also super excited about Donald Byrd’s “Royal Flush” - I already have the Hank Mobley title along with most of the Three Sounds catalog, but will be picking that live show. Great line-up.

Great job with the update thanks!I have them all except Jutta and Cliff Craft so may have to pick them up.Some fantastic titles here, can I suggest Another Workout, JuJu and Wahoo are the 'essentials' for anyone who does not have them.

I’ve been dying for more three sounds releases, and I already have the turrentine / three sounds on order. The jutta hipp and Grant Green all sound good too

Great job Brown. I already have many of these. However, I'm especially looking forward to the Jutta Hipp, Gene Harris, Donald Byrd and Thad Jones.

I have the Aaron Parks record on CD, so happy to get it on vinyl, this is an amazing record. Track Nr.1 to me is "Harvest Dance".

I’m a big fan of The Three Sounds and delighted to see two records coming out. I personally lobbied Michael Cuscuna years ago for a Mosaic but got nowhere so this is great news.

JuJu, Chris Craft, Live at Hickory House. Those are awesome…. Especially Hickory House. Jutta has a kind of sad biography- there is something on KZfaq about her as well .. and a website kinda devoted to her. She was found by Blue Note employees a few years ago, and they delivered a long overdue royalty check. She had been living alone for decades, a retired garment worker. No kids, never married. She also sold her paintings as extra income. Never played music after disappearing from the music scene. Blue Note issued a Jutta Hipp LP a couple years ago during the 80th Anniversary series… they had been so expensive to buy.. rare collectibles. I have the Chris Craft 45rpm. I hardly play it.. a major PITA to flip 45s lol.

As an aside, Jutta Hipp was also an artist and made some interesting paintings. As a matter of fact, some of her stuff was sold on eBay a couple of years ago for not a lot of money. I may have made copies. If I can find them, I will post them on Instagram.

Thankfully to save my wallet,many of these I already have Music Matters copies.Looking forward to Wahoo! and Juju especially.Also the Jutta Hipp and Dexter Gordon.

Great o review of a particularly First class release schedule. The Dexter is a lovely relaxed listen. At last for Three Sounds . Not hip enough for today’s buyers ? Interested to see what KevIn can bring to the live 3 Sounds release. I have the 1996 issue which is housed in a more than usual flimsy cover. Recorded by a Dino Lappas(?) and cover states it is part of a Blue Note Groove Series. Any of Gene

I feel you and me both got the 3 sounds in this list mate, I harangued Joe Harley at every opportunity and he replied to my messages a few times with massively sarcastic responses. I love the 3 sounds, was hoping they may have chosen 'soul symphony' but I can understand why they chose 'blue hour' as its lovely and easy on the ear...

Definitely picking up WORKOUT, THE MAG THAD JONES, CLIFF CRAFT, THE GIGOLO, A NIGHT IN TUNISIA, ROYAL FLUSH, GETTIN' AROUND, and WAHOO. Maybe S TURRENTINE and THE 3 SOUNDS. This is an outstanding lineup for 2024. I want the Hank Mobley, Thad Jones, The Three Sounds and Wahoo. The Thad Jones is probably the hardest to come by and I had to settle for it on Cd. Hey what is that black box set that you have in the video to my right and to your left? Is that Bill Evans?

Good eye, yea that’s the Analogue Productions Bill Evans set. It’s slowly becoming unnecessary as OJC and Craft release these titles again

The Optimal pressing are at least as good as RTI in most cases.

They've certainly improved their QC. Still hit and miss though. RTI are more consistent

Funny that the Lee Morgan- The Cooker is on gatefold, but the sidewinder is not on bluenote records.

Could it be because the Cooker is a Tone Poet and Sidewinder is Classic Series?

Yes it is! Last year I’m pretty sure they announced through April. So this is interesting, I wonder why..

I hope we get better quality covers. What a shame to release these iconic and classic titles in thin 80's type cardboard, and average photography reproduction. For 1$ extra at retail, we could get a higher sense of quality to match the Optimal vinyl that is inside, and pay tribute to the label' artwork and heritage. No need for super glossy gatefold TP type. Just look at what other labels are doing.

A 2008 album on the Classic Vinyl lineup.. and that was originally not on vinyl? Just say No. the CD or hires download is fine, tyvm :)

I have a ton of digitally recorded albums that sound fantastic on vinyl and in almost every case they far exceed streaming in sound quality. Aaron Parks Invisible Cinema is an amazing album

dexter gordon gettin around is a missed opportuinity to include to best tracks from this album "flick of a trick" & "very saxily yours" that were not included on vinyl, without these 2 this album is really just boring.
